Re: UCINET matrix editor unable to open file

Hi, so many things to check …

?

  • Does the dataset open in “display datasets” (sixth button from the left on the toolbar)?
  • Is there both a ##h and ##d file? i.e., looking in windows explorer.
  • How did you create the dataset? Can you redo it?
  • Etc.

Hi Dr. Borgatti,

Thank you so much for your prompt reply. I will definitely do the above!?

Dear “student”, are you using the 64-bit version of ucinet? The n-clique routine is not compatible with that version – you should be getting an error message to that effect. So use the 32-bit version instead. The k-plex routine does work with both versions, but you’re right that the browse button (three dots) wasn’t working. I have now fixed that (version 6.781, online now). As for the output, it consists of a node by k-plex) matrix in which X(i,q)? = 1 indicates that node i is a member of k-plex q. In other words, this is a 2-mode matrix in which each column identifies a k-plex, and indicates which nodes belong to the k-plex. As a next step, you might run that matrix through Data|Affiliations to calculate a 1-mode matrix that indicates, for each pair of nodes, how many k-plexes they belong to in common. Two nodes that belong to many of the same k-plexes are members of the same social circle.

I am a student using UCINET VI (Version 6.776 for Windows), and I'm having issues doing N-clique and kplex analysis with my class social network data. When I do Network > Communities/Subgroups > N-cliques, nothing happens and no tab opens allowing me to specify the n-value.
Also, when I do Network > Communities/Subgroups > K-plexes, the three dots don't work (so I can't select a file and instead had to manually type in the name of my file). When I click OK, I just got a confusing matrix with 28 rows and 79 columns and nothing else. There's nothing that says the number of 2k-plexes in the network.?
I'd greatly appreciate some help troubleshooting these!

Stephen, hello! Two quick questions.

1) Would a replication and extension of a previously published finding be something that Connections would consider?

2) Does Connections still welcome Data Exchange Network submissions? I ask because in my consulting practice here in Scandinavia, I've collected several network datasets from over a dozen companies and public organizations in the region (Sweden, Norway, and Finland), as well as outside of it (Dubai, Qatar, and Peru). Since I'm not really an academic anymore, I've only written one research paper from these datasets (Hunter, Bentzen, & Taug 2020). If others might find them useful, I'd be willing to begin turning them into one or more DEN submissions.?

Actually, something else just occurred?to me...is it possible to generate the ties that are only in Fig 2 in the paper i.e. the consensus network with 0.5 as the threshold?

Hello, I'm teaching a short course and tried to use an old exercise originally designed by Martin Everett. In the prior version of UCINET, it was possible to take the camp92 dataset, use Data > Extract and keep column 1, and then use Data > Spreadsheet to change the column values to 0 for females and 1 for males. This would then set up the possibility of checking whether the camp92 data exhibited homophily by gender. The latest version of UCINET doesn't seem to allow extracting a column and changing values in this way. Is there a workaround?

Re: Node level regression problem #error #help

I'm glad that I'm not the only one who had this issue! And I'm also glad that the legacy procedure is still in place, thank you for the screenshot.

I never had an issue with the legacy procedure and long pathnames, the only difference I can see between the legacy version and the new version is the dialog box where you add the IV. I just tried it again with a long pathname for the DV, and it worked fine. It just seems to be an issue with the dialog box when the filename is longer than one row.

Dan

Re: Node level regression problem #error #help

Hi Steve and Dan,

I have not tried this for a year or perhaps more.

But, yes, I have had the same problems with several different versions of regression in UCINET.

I never figured out the specific details (e.g. max path length).

I dealt with with this by making short folders and short file names. And not running the procedures in subfolders or subsubfolders. This allowed it to work.

Whatever the problem is, the max path text length limit is different and shorter for UCINET than it is for Windows. I know this because I can use the same long paths with other programs, but not with UCINET.

Sincerely,

DBT

Hi

I'm used to using the legacy procedure for node level regression, but it seems to have been removed from the latest update to UCInet. I have had problems in the past getting the current version of the procedure working, with a message saying "Error: Unable to open file SCRATCH.##D for INPUT."

It turns out that the file pathname I was using for the independent variable was too long. When the file appeared in the "In model:" dialog box it wrapped around to a second line, but when I moved the file to a root directory it stopped being an issue.

I don't know if this is a known issue, but it had been problematic for me for a while, and I couldn't find anything about it on the forum. I thought I would mention it in case any one else had the same issue.

Is there a fix for this other than moving the file or renaming folders?

Dan
