Re: #help How to deal with collinearity between independent variables when running MRQAP ? #help

Hi,

Assuming no violation of other OLS assumptions, you can go ahead as you choose. However, I wouldn't dismiss the outcome or see it as a problematic?outcome,?necessarily. By controlling for the prescribed network, you are in fact picking up formal collaboration and communication associated with it. Informal interaction may be less needed, because there is formal interaction already, while on the other hand when there is no formal collaboration, there will be more informal interaction needed.

Good luck.

Best regards,
David

When I? include IV1 and the control variable, IV1 is insinificant and sign is +. Hi,
First of all, sorry for the delay.
Dear ¡°apprentice¡± (or should I call you William Sealy Gosset?
I didn't know about this anecdote, but no, I am only a curious guy.??
Anyway, I know that REGE is not available in Ucinet 64-bit, and I am using the 32-bit version.
When I apply the method on small networks, it works, but with bigger networks, more than 200 nodes, the GUI freeze for a bit, and then the "calculating" window disappears. No similarity matrix or dendogram is shown, and I can not find the results in the designed folder.

Yes, that could be added. But one way to do half of what you want right now is this:

?

Go to data|filter|multiple subgraphs from partition. Fill out form like this:

?

Note that the network is pv504, the attribute dataset is pv504attr, and I have selected ¡°deptid¡± as the specific attribute of interest. The result is:

Saved pv504-3

Each of these saved datasets contains the network within one department. Then run ego net composition using each of these networks (and some other attributes, like gender).

[Edited Message Follows]

Hi Everyone,

I am calculating each ego's composition of networks by Ego Networks | Egonet Composition | Categorical Attributes. I have work and idea-sharing relationships between actors from a whole network. The procedure runs fine and I have generated IQV and Blau's index. However, I wanted to know the diversity of roles within one group such as ego belongs to finance staff, what is the composition (heterogeneity/Blau's index) of the finance people within his egonet (within diversity), and what is the composition of others (between ego's group and other roles - between diversity) (e.g., marketers, sales, etc.)
?
Blau's index for within groups will be, I think, using the proportion of his groups' ties only.
For between groups, other proportions can be used to calculate in excel, I reckon. I am unsure.

Is there a way of doing these in UCINET? If not, would UCINET team be able to incorporate these into UCINET and provide these in the output as separate columns: ego's category, within heterogeneity and between heterogeneity, perhaps IQV would be appreciated as well?

I went through the forum's chats but I couldn't come across a solution. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Composition (heterogeneity/diversity) between and within groups #help

Hi Prof. Borgatti and UCINET team,

I posted the idea about between-diversity calculations based on Blau's index and you responded that this could be added. I wonder whether this is implemented, yet. If not, can you please tell me whether you will implement this? I want to use it. I checked the version history but I could not pinpoint this feature addition. I appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.?

Hi,

The analyses is the same. The interpretation may be somewhat different as you have directed data instead of undirected data, which could be important.?

I have one question relating to MRQAP procedure in UCINET.
I have collected two types of social relations among the same set of actors:? When I include a sender effect, UCINET prompts the following message:? "Note: At least one matrix was not symmetric, so all data treated as directed." Does it mean that the result maybe unreliable and that MR-QAP is unappropriate for undirected network analysis??

Re: #help sender effect for undirected network in MRQAP #help

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Hi, mr-qap is appropriate for both directed and undirected networks. The message you are seeing is essentially saying the cases in the regression are all n*(n-1) non-diagonal cells in the adjacency matrices. When all of the matrices are symmetric, the program the cases are just the n*(n-1)/2 cells in the upper or lower half of the matrices ¨C no need to include duplicate cells. (This is just for economy. Unlike in ordinary regression, duplicating all of the observations doesn¡¯t change the results. In ordinary regression, duplicating cases would reduce p-values.) In your data, your two base networks are undirected, but the sender effect is a non-symmetric matrix. So the program is just telling you that since this indep variable is symmetric, it is using all n*(n-1) cells of all the matrices.
