Our next contra dance will be this Friday, May 17 at the Channing-Murray Foundation, 1209 W. Oregon in Urbana. The band will be The Young and the Fretless with Tom Bassett, Lyle Konigsberg, Rolf Pendall and Rebecca Grosser. Kristi Emilsson will be the caller for the evening. As usual there will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30 and the dance will start at 8. Bring your friends to join in the fun and snacks to share at the break. Hoping you can join us! Dan Urbana Country Dancers Schottische is the best couple dance ever invented for expressing mental flexibility and creativity. Its basic footwork creates a metronome that is satisfying with no embellishments, requires no turning when dancers want a break after a dizzying waltz, and has multiple places for a lot of turns for those who like spinning. This class will cover its unique basic steps, and go over the simple vocabulary that can be combined into a wide variety of dance moves. To dance a schottische is to be a genius on the dance floor!

I've just gotten a note from the organizer for the American Dance and Music Week in California. The camp is from June 30 to July 5 this summer. They just had one of their staff members drop out due to life events and are looking for a replacement. They are looking for someone who could prepare meals for the campers. They say the person would be paid as the talent staff, including round-trip travel to camp. Hoping you can join us! Dan Urbana Country Dancers In 1844, a frisky new dance took Europe and America became all the rage. The Polka Craze of 1844, aka “Polkamania,” was easy, fun, and absolutely everyone was doing it! This class will cover a basic turning polka, some simple polka variations, and more recent adaptations for use at Oktoberfests and other modern contexts.

Our next contra dance will be on Friday, April 5 at the Phillips Center in Urbana. The band for the evening will be Too Old To Be Controlled with Claudia and Gary Kaufman & Dave Kuntz from Danvers and Bloomington-Normal. I will be the caller for the dance. We'll have some great old time music and some fun dances. As usual there will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30 and the dance will start at 8. Hoping you can join us! Dan Urbana Country Dancers The waltz has been “The Queen of All Dances” for over 200 years. While the dance changed drastically every 15-20 years, orbiting around your partner in 3/4 time never failed to be magical. This class will cover a waltz technique that has endured for a majority of waltz’s history, called Progressive Waltz, Rotary Waltz, Viennese Waltz, and no doubt both The New Waltz and The Old Waltz. To break up the dizzying amount of turning, we will also discuss traveling while NOT turning, and a variety of period handholds to be done while traveling.

Register by March 13 for the series or one day prior to subsequent classes About the instructor Jeanette Watts has been teaching historical dances for over 20 years. She is the founder of the Terpsichorean Delights Dance Assembly in Dayton, Ohio, Queen City Vintage Dance in Charlotte, North Carolina, and spent covid writing an 8-volume series of instructional dance manuals for historical museums. Our next contra dance will be this Friday, March 15 at Channing-Murray, 1209 W. Oregon in Urbana. The band will be the Dangerous Contraband with Sam Atkinson (fiddle), Henry Kraatz (fiddle), Beau Barber (mandolin), Connor Lasalle (guitar) and Mike Atkinson (bass). The caller for the evening will be Kristi Emilsson. As usual there will be a short introduction to contra dance at 7:30 and the dance will start at 8. Bring your friends to join in the fun and snacks to share at the break. Masks will be required while dancing at this event. I hope everyone will come out and join us for some fun music and dance.
