[fayettegaares] Tuesday ARES Forum
2
Hey y'all! In Fayette County GA, they were discussing some things that we as ARES members can do in the case of any kind of railroad incident should occur. I worked for the railroad for 21 years in safety. I had some good pointers to offer them and I wanted to also share them with UAARC as well. Here in East Texas we have Union Pacific, BNSF and about a half dozen short line and industrial carriers. Outside of that, the info is pretty mainstream. Please keep this info in your pocket, under your hat or wherever you store your Emergency response info. 73's Jason KE4CPC ----- Forwarded Message -----

Know the difference between CSX, Norfolk Southern and any industrial railroad not affiliated with either. CSX is 1-800-232-0144. Norfolk Southern is 800-946-4744 or 800-453-2530. Every railroad crossing in the country has an Emergency Contact placard that looks like this: Even private roads have this placard. When reporting any incident to the dispatcher, the Crossing ID "234567-X" is beneficial because it refers uniquely to that crossing's location. The dispatcher even has Lat/Lon coordinates for that crossing on their database in case there's ever any confusion about which of the 7 railroad crossings are on Lake Ave. over the course of 2-6 miles. These crossings are landmarks that both the Railroad and First Responders can coordinate on. While emergency responders are looking for a street name and nearest cross street, the railroad will use a Milepost and decimal to ID the crossing. When referring to a train, it's beneficial to know which way the train was going. In Georgia, all railroads refer to the traffic as going "Timetable North" or "Timetable South" even if the rails are going East and West. But that's not what you need to know. All you need to be able to do is identify whether the train was going "Right to Left" or Left to Right" when you are facing the tracks at the crossing, and on which side of the tracks you are on. If you can give that description to the person taking your call, they will be able to determine the direction of travel of your train. If there are multiple tracks, it's also beneficial to be able to describe whether it was the track closest to you, furthest away, in the middle, etc. Every railcar and locomotive has a unique Identifier called a Reporting Mark. These help the railroad identify and track each car as they pass through the railroad network. A reporting mark has 2 to 4 alpha letters and from 1 to 6 numbers. They are located on the left sides of the cars facing their sides and on the top left corners of the ends of the cars. Every train is required to have a list of their cars and the order that they are in. So if you are reporting NDYX 163482 the railroad company will be able to see that car is 67th from the locomotives at the front. The car next to that is EEC 16 and they will see that it is 66th from the front. And so on... (Of course this is assuming it's not painted over with graffiti) And then finally, HAZMAT cars are equipped with placards on the right side and at the ends of each railcar that contains a HAZMAT or a residue. Not all railcars, especially tanks, contain hazardous materials. For instance, on the line I was working for, we got 6-8 tank cars of sweetener (corn syrup) every week for a beverage company and 15-20 tanks a week full of food grade cooking oil for a plant that bottled it for retail use. A lot of tank cars have their products stenciled on the side but unless there's a HAZMAT placard accompanying it, then the content

Introducing myself
5
Howdy folks, I recently moved here to the Pritchett area, my wife and I. That's between Big Sandy and Gilmer for those who don't already know. After nearly 21 years of faithful service to the Railroad, I was forced to retire in July 2021 on disability.. So we decided since there was nothing keeping us in Atlanta GA anymore, to come back to Texas. The part of Texas we were in before is Smithville, but we wanted something a little further North and East so here we are! We are both originally from Central Florida, think mickey mouse area. Anyways I have been a Ham since June 1993. I was just a kid when I got my license and have always enjoyed combining the hobby with outdoors. This POTA program has been a good excuse for me to get back into combining the two again. A lot of what I enjoy doing is helping out. If that means sorting paperwork for the club or selling tickets at the gates of some hamfest, etc. I've participated in hundreds of parades, bike races and triathlons, rodeos, community events and even a Filming lot. If there was a way to help out AND use my radio, I was probably there! Recently, I assisted in the rekindling of a fire that was a dying radio club just south of Atlanta ,the Henry County Amateur Radio Society. A big part of the fallout was COVID, where the club lost the ability to hold meetings or testing and study sessions. They also had some personality conflicts between the Henry EOC, the Hospital and the radio club officers. So after new people were appointed to the EOC, they were interested to see what the radio club had to offer. I proposed that the members of the radio club go out and confirm that each of the 48 sirens were audibly functioning each month during the scheduled tests. The first ham-involved test was April of this year where we had 8 hams and 3 non-ham volunteers. During that test it was discovered that only some of the sirens were actually audible. Over the course of the next few months, we were able to test all of the sirens and out of 48, only 23 were audibly functioning. Until the hams got involved, Henry EOC believed the sirens were all working because the tests came back saying no errors and that's all they had to go on. The contractor who installed the sirens are now repairing or replacing the malfunctioning sirens. An additional 25 sirens are being placed in the county to cover the newly developed areas that were not well covered by other sirens. The next service we provided the EOC was to host Field Day in June of this year at the EOC. Everyone was quite impressed by the variety of stations available in such short notice, so that we could keep the county on the air in the event of a disaster or loss of communications infrastructure. There's lots more to be done with that radio club, but once they got a new website and started talking again on it and the repeater, I felt they were in good hands and I could dip out. Now with that being said, how's everything here in this club? What kind of activities are y'all hosting? I attended the meeting last month and I will be attending the meeting this month as well. I went to and helped out (I think) with the POTA activation at Daingerfield SP. I've looked around and I've not seen any kind of a calendar for events but perhaps I've missed it? Has anyone struck up the idea of hosting a hamfest or swap meet here in Gilmer? There's several places that would be well suited to a gathering but the Yamboree grounds would probably be the best place if you were to have a full-on hamfest. Do y'all have a PR booth for events like the fair or the yamboree, so you can introduce non-hams to the hobby? Does the radio club sponsor any other kind of activities? For instance, the Henry County GA group also hosted a Team in Relay for Life and we had a campsite in the Relay event. We also had (itinerant business band) radios and a repeater we could give to the staff so they were not relying only on phones or tablets to communicate with each other. In the Winter, the same place that hosted Relay in the spring also had a Christmas lights walk and the same radio

What happens when a ham gets a 3D printer?
2
Hi folks. Since Cliff prompted me, I thought I'd share one of my newest projects. Last week I got a Creality Ender 3 3D printer. This seems to be what most people consider an entry level printer, but it seems really good for the price. The build was simple, and the quality impressed me. All the needed tools were included in the box, too. So far I have made three prints for a total of two finished assemblies, and I have been happy with how easy the slicer software was to use, in addition to the fact that there are a great number of free files online that are essentially ready to print. I'm using Linux based software, and that includes FreeCAD for modeling and Ultimaker Cura as the slicer. I highly recommend both. FreeCAD was a bit of a challenge for me to get started with, but once you understand constraints, it seems to work quite well. I think that both are available for Windows, and I believe FreeCAD can be installed on MAC OS as well. My main reasons for getting this printer were to print parts and enclosures. If you've ever gone shopping for project boxes, you'll know they aren't cheap. I felt confident that I could produce my own and save some money in the long run. In the parts category, I have plans to print things like knobs, shafts, mounts, and antenna parts. Sometimes the little odds and ends that take a project from mediocre to professional grade lie out of reach for the creative ham because of cost, or unavailability. Or, the construction techniques demand tools and equipment that aren't worth getting for one or two projects. While 3D printing doesn't seem to be plug-n-play like an inkjet printer, I think there is a lot of potential for the tool. For one, many soldering hobby kits come without cases. The same applies to home-brew equipment like QRP transmitters or crystal sets. Being able to print enclosures for whatever project you make allows them to store easier, and protect them from mechanical damage or accidental contact with live conductors. This removes several excuses for not building and using your own homebrew equipment. One can print spacers for open wire line, or even open coaxial cables. Antenna insulators, spacers, mounts, coil forms, each of these could be printed. Lastly, it provides an opportunity to experiment with a variety of engineering and mechanical techniques in an inexpensive and customizable way that doesn't require the likes of a milling machine and years of training on its use. 3D printing does have limitations. For one, plastic isn't as resilient as steel or aluminum. Equipment that needs shielding would require this on the PCB level, or a conductive liner inside a plastic case. Moreover, the design work needed to produce custom enclosures may be more complex than necessary if the project fits in something like an Altoids tin or an outlet box that is readily available. I also think that in some ways, a balance needs to be had between utilizing what materials are available around you and custom manufacturing what is needed. There is also some inherent limitations on what temperature ranges 3D printed parts can be exposed to without deformation, as well as resistance to chemicals or hazardous environments. Lord willing, I'll make some posts concerning my projects with this tool, including any snags or difficulties I encounter in the design and manufacturing process. I'm still trying to decide what to print next. Everything I can think of will take a very long time to print. A time long enough that it makes me slightly hesitant to press the button I'm talking hours of printing. Hours of time for something to go wrong, leaving me meters of printer filament in a tangled web or a giant pile of smoldering, flaming, off-gassing, goo that was once a functioning 3D printer. Might my first three successful prints have been an abnormality? Might it get worse from here on? Ought I print only small things until I develop confidence? Must I keep a close eye on it whilst printing? Should I put it in a fireproof enclosure and purge it with Argon? A deep vacuum? Should I mount a smoke detector nea

3D Printing

Does anyone know of someone that might be willing to do a simple 3D print job if I paid for the materials? I got a little power/SWR/Dummy load gadget and a enclosure would be nice to have. FYI... You don't have to be associated with ARES or RACES to participate in the exercise (see details below). Kelly... KD5S -----Original Message----- From: John Newman <n9jn@...> Sent: Tuesday, July 26, 2022 3:42 PM Subject: Statewide Exercise, September 24, 2022 - SAVE THE DATE All Northeast Texas Amateur Radio Operators, The Texas Department of Emergency Management (TDEM) will be conducting a statewide exercise on Saturday, September 24. It will be coordinated by Texas State Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES). The purpose of the exercise is to determine locations throughout the state of those operators available to help with emergency communications during a major statewide event. Please note that operators DO NOT have to be associated with any entity to participate. The exercise is OPEN to all licensed operators and is supported by ARES organizations throughout the state. Data will be requested regarding certain facilities and services within a 2-mile radius of an operator's home. Exercise documents are available on the etecs.org website under "September 2022 Emcomm Exercise Information" on the main page. NOTE: for this exercise the internet is NOT available. The requested information will include the following data within the 2-mile radius: 1. School(s) - Number 2. Hospital(s) - Number 3. Power Plant(s) - Number 4. Water Treatment Plants(s) - Number 5. Storm Shelter(s) - Number The data will be collected by each State RACES region and forwarded to the State Operations Center (SOC) in Austin. Northeast Texas is considered Region 2 which includes TDEM (DPS) locations in Mt. Pleasant, Tyler and Lufkin. Operators wishing to provide exercise data are requested to do so on the various repeater systems throughout our area. We plan to RF link NESTx system (Lufkin Hub), ETECS system (Tyler Hub), and FLG system (Cusseta Hub) on Saturday, September 24 with a net control available starting at 0900 to accept operator data. Please call State Exercise Net Control with your information. The data collection will end at 1600 that day. In addition to the voice transmission, the exercise calls for transmission of this information via Winlink using the "check in form" found in the Templates section. Type in the requested data in the comment section and send to n9jn@.... Be sure to include your Lat/Lon in the check in form. It is recognized that many operators may not currently have Winlink capability or have issues with getting Winlink set up. To that end, Winlink training will be offered each Thursday evening at 1900 via Zoom. The Zoom training will begin Thursday, August 4th at 1900 and repeat each Thursday through September 15th. Also, there are links to Winlink training videos (Wavetalkers) available on etecs.org website should you want to get a head start. Click on "September 2022 Emcomm Exercise Information" on the main page. Here is the link to join the Zoom training on August 4th: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/6521577241?pwd=OGxHOFFKa2JlYXNoOGsyZnZWZ0pQZz09 Meeting ID: 652 157 7241 Passcode: 123456 Please provide wide distribution of this exercise notice to all clubs, organizations, and individual operators in your area. Remember operators do not have to be members of RACES or ARES to participate. Also, remember to mark your calendars now. It is desired that ALL operators in the Northeast Texas Region will participate. Thanks in advance for your participation. 73, John Newman, N9JN State RACES Regional Officer NTX ARES DEC9
