Antenna Party
开云体育UAARC Members,I want to update you on the antenna party Saturday.? We had a perfect crew of Jo Ann KA5AZK, Nancy KT8TOR, Gary K5GDM, George KG5UGY, Tommy KG5ZSU, Jim N5TQI, Garrett Manning no-call and myself. The DB224-E that Jerry WA5OKO donated to us weighs 38 pounds.? In order to raise it in the upright position, it required a nearly equal counterweight attached to the bottom, bringing the total weight to just under 80 pounds. Several hours were spent Saturday morning studying and designing the lift.? After a? quick lunch, the crew split into ground and tower members.? The first task after settling in atop the tower was to raise a gin pole and mount it.? Next the tower crew disconnected the Ringo Ranger for the ground crew to lower. Next, the ground crew raised the DB224, now 40 feet long to the upright position, where the counterweight kept it for the trip up the tower. The tower crew clamped it into place atop the tower.? Testing yesterday after the installation showed a 13 dB improvement in receive performance.? We may need to increase the transmit power if we see the repeater now hears better than it talks. Many thanks to the antenna party, and if you get the chance be sure to tell them so!? Please try the new antenna from you QTH and mobile as you can. 73, John W5BWC EC, Upshur Co ARES |
Great job everybody!?? And special thanks to Jerry for donating the equipment! It is a huge improvement! Before the new antenna, I couldn't key the repeater with an HT from my QTH. I just tested the same radio from my back porch and am happy to report I was able to easily get in and John reported only some minor noise on my end. Not bad at all!? Yes, thank you, Jerry, for the antenna and the repeater! And many thanks to all who helped on the project. That was a great crew we had out there on Saturday.
After some testing on Monday, we had good coverage into Longview with only a 1/4 wave whip and less then 50 watts. I think 5 watts worked for the most part, but I don't remember for sure. I can talk to the repeater with 25 watts and the same 1/4 wave mag mount while sitting in my driveway, with the report from John that the 25 watts sounded as good as (if not better than) the 100 watts into my base station antenna before the upgrade. I am sure that mobile coverage with a longer antenna would be much more reliable. Still, this repeater seems to cover a large chunk of three counties with relatively simple equipment. I can't wait to hear about the coverage to the west side of Upshur County--and beyond! 73 de KG5ZSU Tommy Brooks Omaha, Tx. |
