I too have been researching the V-6 units
and here is what I've found so far.

Pros:
The V-6 does not have the timing chain filure
problem of the 22re.

It does have a bit more horsepower.

A v-6 unit should bring a better price at
resale time.

Cons:
It has had head gasket problems. Some are
still being repaired free at the dealers,
but others are not covered. I don't know
which ones are covered. (More research is
needed here).

The HP increase is only about 35 hp over
the 22re and it weighs more.

Now here's the bomb: A list member on another
Toyota list says he was told by DOA motors, one
of the top Toyota performance engine builders
out in California (They sell a hot 22re) that
70% of the V6s need major engine work at around
90,000 miles.

Is this true? I plan to look into it further
before I consider going with a 6 cyl
unit. Perhaps "Consumer Reports" back issues
might shed some light on the reliabilty of
this engine.
