I am asking any one who has the 6 cyl toyotas how
well they hold up, I have a 88 Itasca with the 22re motor and it runs great even after 91000 mi. I have been looking at the ads and will only buy a Itasca as it is the best built,2 1/2 in walls and all aluminum under and over. But wnt to get a 90 to 94 one with the biger motor, if any one has had problems with the 6 let me know. Thanks, Scott |

I am asking any one who has the 6 cyl toyotas how Scott. I too have been researching the V-6 units and here is what I've found so far. Pros: The V-6 does not have the timing chain filure problem of the 22re. It does have a bit more horsepower. A v-6 unit should bring a better price at resale time. Cons: It has had head gasket problems. Some are still being repaired free at the dealers, but others are not covered. I don't know which ones are covered. (More research is needed here). The HP increase is only about 35 hp over the 22re and it weighs more. Now here's the bomb: A list member on another Toyota list says he was told by DOA motors, one of the top Toyota performance engine builders out in California (They sell a hot 22re) that 70% of the V6s need major engine work at around 90,000 miles. Is this true? I plan to look into it further before I consider going with a 6 cyl unit. Perhaps "Consumer Reports" back issues might shed some light on the reliabilty of this engine. Jack A2 |
