How I found my Toyota

I just wanted to share with everyone how I came across my 1983 Toyota
Dolphin.
Two years ago I was driving to work, when I saw a Toyota Mini-Cruiser
getting on to the highway. I was so interested that I followed it. I
said that I just have to have one of those little units.
Being from Minnesota, I didn't want to purchase one form this part of
the country because of the rust problems. I went back home that day
and hopped on Autotrader.com and went to the RV search. After some
time browsing the ads, I found the one I wanted down in Tempe AZ.
Gave the owner a call and he sent some pictures of the unit. When the
pictures arrived, I called him back and said that I would be down
next week!
I took a week off of work and flew down with Ma'. She said that she
would like the adventure. We arrived at the hotel and arranged for
the owner to meet us the next morning at the Motel 6. I could hardly
sleep that night!
Woke up the next morning and went outside to wait for my "new" mini
home on wheels. Right at 9:00am, it came around the corner, and we
both couldn't wait to see the inside and take it for a drive!
The owner has a body shop, so that year he gave it a great paint job,
it truly looks like brand new. The inside was original brown tones
with the bathroom behind the driver's seat.
We took it for a spin for a good hour. He had documents to show that
the engine had just been rebuilt 2,000 miles ago, and that the axle
had been taken care of. It had 61,000 miles on the clock and ran like
a champ with the four speed.
Got back to his house and he showed me how everything worked, which
it did. The only thing that was not in order was the cab air. The
compressor had frozen, and he never replaced it. that's ok with me
because I'm only 32 and I can take a little heat, just roll down the
window!
Gave hime the $4000.00 he was asking, and we were on our way!
The trip home took five days, we took our time. It was just great to
pull up, hook up, and hit the sack. All nice and warm,(It was March),
and able to do maost of the cooking on the way back.
Going throgh the mountains tested the little 22R, but never sank
below 50 on the interstates.
Arrived back home with not one problem. Averaged abou 16 mpg on the
way back. The only thing I have done to it so far is to have a
Thourley header installed in place of the original manifold. Also had
the large muffler removed to a straight pipe(not much louder), and
had a K&N air filter put on. The power gain is quite noticeable!!
Will pull hills better now and cruise at 65 on the flat.
Have some big plans for Toya this summer, it's going to be great!
In closing, I was wondering if there is a group of owners that go on
caravans at all. Let me know!
Happy Toyota RVing!!!

JOhn here, I have been thinking about a high performance header
on my 87 22r-e. Tell me about the costs of the change & where would
one look for it.

Thanks John

Hi John,
I found the header for my 22R on the Internet. I didn't bookmark the site,
but I'm sure if you used the search engine Google.com, like I did you will
find the site. The correct spelling is Thourley headers. The cost of the
header and the gasket was around 180.00. I then took it to a muffler shop I
have done business with in the past. I knew that I couldn't do the job
myself, those old manifold bolts are hard to get out.
The labor for putting the header on was 237.00. It was high because one of
the old bolts broke off in the head and they had to tap it out. The cost of
the modification was well worth the cost!
If you have any further questions, don't hesitate to contact me!

Hi John,
I found the header for my 22R through the Thourley header web site. The cost
was 189.00 including the gasket.
The installation was 237.00, it's quite a job to get the old manifold bolts
out, and one of the bolts broke off in the head and had to be tapped out.
Definitely not a job for the beginner.
The power increase was worth the time and money spent.
Hope this helps! ?????????????????????????????????Pat
