It started - then, just won’t…

After starting our 1987 Toyota Sunrader today a number of times, on our last stop at the grocery store, it wouldn’t start. ?Fortunately, it was within walking distance of home, to get our car and our groceries home and have supper. ?
?
All startup sounds are the same, and all the instrument lights show bright. ?But, nothing from the starter. ?What is heard is a single click from this attached electrical device. ?Turn the key to start - one click. ?The same each retry. ?Any ideas?
?
We bought this Sunrader 13 years ago on 11/1/11. ?And when I bought it, I never had the idea of not using it. ?I thought we would always enjoy traveling with it. ?But our last trip with it was in June 2023, and that was just for three days. ?I start it every three months, drive it around to exercise the tires, but time hasn’t allowed for doing more with it.
?
On 2/23/23, our Grand Girl was born and started living with us. ?And that is where our time is being well spent. ?My birthday is June 23rd, so each month on the 23rd, we celebrate our birth days. ?She was just 20 months of age and on the same day, I was 952 months of age. ?In other words, 79+.
?
And it is age though, that has me now thinking of letting somebody else use the Sunrader, for we aren’t getting around to it. ?Yet when it started right off today, I couldn't help by think, well if it still has get up and go, maybe I can keep up with it. ?The 22RE has an age of only 59,000 miles. ?I realize I don’t have such longevity.
?
Such thoughts were with me as I drove it around today, pleased again that it started right up. ?Though we were just driving errands around town, moving along with it - I was moved, like the pleasing experience of being on the road again. ?Got it filled with gas, Sta-Bil in it and the cover ready to shelter it from the winter rains. ?I just got to get it home. ?Tom

If you haven't already tried, jump the solenoid from one side to the other, it may need replacing. If that doesn't work, it may be the starter or a weak battery.

Bright lights on the?dash mean you have good battery power. The click means your ignition switch (key) is getting through to the starter relay (where the click is likely coming from). Most likely, there's corrosion or something gunking up the starter solenoid. Temporarily, tapping lightly? on the starter while attempting to crankd tends to get it started. May have to try several times. Have your partner turn the key while you tap on the starter. Not too hard, or you can put a hole in the casing like I did. No biggie, though, because replacing the starter resolved the issue. This happened to me a couple months ago.

the pic of where the click comes from looks to be the battery isolator.? ? ?is the trans manual?? could be a clutch safety switch, or as stated? the starter solenoid is not getting a ground which is through the brushes. if they are worn, tapping with a hammer will sometimes shake the brushes into contact with the commutator and voila? ?starter works.? ?if this is the case you prob won't get another go at it.? time for a starter

This has the Denso starter, a common problem occurs after many years, the starter solenoid contacts wear out and then all you get is a click. Repair kits are available or just replace the starter.
Aaron from Colorado

right. just depends on where the click is coming from

Hello Tom, you should start a journal section of the toyota site, and share your thoughts more often, there's lots of younger rvs than yours, (and younger people people out?there than us), but experience and the gift for telling a story never get old.? Keep on truckin'-
