Thanks for the help. Probably a spring project as winter is upon us in the northeast.

I had The tank off before because the original tank had a leak in a seam and then the replacement tank I bought for it leaked at the spot welds at the bottom I had to do that again until finally I got a tank that was? good. If you're not seeing any dripping leaks it's more likely it's a breather hose or the fill hose that has a crack. Best of luck, Pete

Re: Need 22R Engine replacement for my 1982 Sunrader JTRN44DOC0052810

Hi Julia, I'm sorry you're not able to enjoy your RV. I have a 1985 Toyota dolphin I've had since 1999. I got lucky when I bought it because now I know fuel injection and the one ton rear end are things I would not want to do without. For the money it is gonna cost to fix your 1982 Personally I would say I would sell it as is and put the money toward a newer model that already had the rear end done and was fuel injection. Some people highly value the all fiberglass bodies that the Sun Raiders have. But on my metal sides I've had no problems except having to seal the roof items(Vents etc.) every couple years because of all the movement. As a side note I am convinced to remove all screws from roof items and just glue the vents on except the AC to prevent leaks from forming.
I would recommend taking a mostly objective look at the whole picture and determine if the interior has issues like leaks wood rot appliances that don't work cushions that need recovering plumbing issues electrical issues Etc. And decide if a newer model Could solve some of the problems you have. One thing about buying a RV of this type where they are very old find a seller that is willing to let you have the engine examined by a professional that can take compression properly and other tests to confirm the power plant is sound. Also you're 82 may not have cab AC which I find is so necessary in the desert where I live 29 palms CA. So moving up to a Slightly newer model may have other advantages. Also you may find someone that wants a sunrader specifically for the fiberglass body that wants to put it on a 4 by 4 chassis and has tons of money to trick it out.
Sorry if this is not a solution you're hoping for but we really appreciate your post on this site because we are a Toyota community take care

How long ago did you get that engine from LQK?? I contacted LQK San Diego and Calif both, last year and this month, but they don't have anything "THAT OLD".??

uartyzsite Rally".

Update from Julia about 22R engine search.? When I said that I had too many fires to put out in my life 2023, the fires were all about different people cheating me out of a lot of money, all having to do with the same house, but different situations.? ?Now I have 5 separate lawsuits I wanna do Pro Per, cos attorney costs would be more than I hire them to recover.? ?I told Tika I don't have time to "relax and enjoy being on vacation at her Quartzsite Rally", as she told me to.? ?I don't know what it is about me that I am so vulnerable to being cheated!??

?

Anyhow here are the options I have for a motor so far, not in any order of expense or desirability:

?

11.???A local (still 30 miles away) metal recycling yard has a used 1983 22R motor for $1200 that comes out of a Hilux Pickup not motorhome, they said is in “good running condition”, but they “have no idea how many miles is on it”.? Warranty is 30 days from date of purchase, not date of installation.?

?

2.2.? ?The 1984 22R with 104,215 miles on it that Linda said was at El Rey Auto Parts in LA, costs $1400 (has $100 core charge) has 90-day warranty.? El Rey guy named Said said it costs $300 for shipping to San Diego.? Right now I don’t have a labor quote from anyone willing to install this used motor if I buy it, except Precision below, who charges $250/hr for 20 hours.

?

3.3.? ?When I first contacted this 5 solid Yelp star mechanic a year ago, Precision Auto? ?? (solid 5 star Yelp reviews) owner told me he could install a remanuf 22R for $6000.? The business is only about 10 miles from where the Sunrader is stored at.? But I didn’t take action then because I didn’t know how much other options would cost.? So today it would cost $7097.06.? Problem is he doesn’t have a place to store something as tall as Sunraders are and cannot be moved due to non-working engine, there is no locked yard to be covered by insurance.? I asked how much the remanf engine itself cost. ?Service lady named Courtney quoting,?said $3000.

?

?When I told her that Linda found the used engine for $1400 that another business had marked up $1000 to $2400, and “did you do that to this remanf engine, mark it up?”? Courtney admitted, “Yes, Precision would be paying $2000 for the remanuf engine and selling it to me for $3000”. ??She said the labor to install an engine is 20 hours. ?Their labor charge is $175/hr, but if I provided my own motor, they would charge $250/hr, and we concluded that the price difference between used motor and remanuf motor with cheaper labor costs to install, it would be better to go with price for installing a remanuf engine. ??Also the owner cannot get the motor installed within the 30 days used motor warranty which starts from the date of used motor purchase, not from the date of the finished installation.

?

?But Precision will give a 4 year warranty on their remanuf engine, and a 2 year labor warranty for the remanf motor.

?

4.4.???? ?The California Mini Truck salvage yard in Montclair, that Tika and Linda said good words about, has a matching 1982 used motor. But for some reason Junior took a look at that motor and does not feel comfortable selling it, as is, used,? He said he would rebuild it for $4900 including all new other parts such as new radiator, water pump, and other parts too numerous I forgot.?

?

So I called my insurance towing and they quoted $857 from my address in San Diego to Calif Mini Truck 4002 State St., Montclair for 107 miles (says Google Maps).? By using Yelp quotes, I got the towing price down, down, down to only $500 ?here>? ? 21 solid 5 star Yelp reviews (incl those weeded reviews not included in the posted ones).? Yes, I made him google images of what a Sunrader 18 ft was, and that it weighs 5000 lbs.?

?

But Junior had to make sure they could get the parts for the rebuild.? Junior called the parts supplier 3 times in the last week, and they still haven’t called him back with an answer, so that is where I am with Calif Mini Truck today.

?

That’s my report, so what do you think, you guys?? ?

Hi Tika, we will have to regret this year as we already have other plans. Sounds like a great time!

QUARTZSITE RALLY RESERVATIONS NOW BEING ACCEPTED!

Unlike some more informal rallies in Quartzsite, this is not a Rally that you can just show up at.??The number of spots we have available is 17.??Therefore if you are wanting to attend, please CALL US ON THE PHONE soon to register (not via group post or text), and then send your payment right away to secure your campsite before we are full.?

?

Now here below are all the specific details (please read it all carefully):

- - - -?

?

The dates are Thursday, January 16 to Tuesday, January 21, 2025.? This is our annual rally that takes place during the first weekend of the huge RV Show which is held in Quartzsite every year.? Actually, if you want to, you can stay even longer -- some folks in our group will be staying for the entire 10-day show.?

?

The location where we will be camping is Stuffed Camel RV Park in Quartzsite.? It is the not the same RV park as last year, nor where we were two years ago.??Rather it is a small family-owned RV park on the north side of the Interstate on the Main Street — about .8 miles’ walk to the RV show’s “Big Tent.”? The "Early-Bird" registration rate totals $135 for the five nights with full hookups.

?

The reason we are putting a limit on the number of folks we can accommodate this year — only 17 Toyota RVs -- is because that’s how many sites there are in this RV park.??This means that if we have that many attendees, we will pretty much have the RV park all to ourselves!??To reserve one of the 17 spots, please CALL US (626-798-4510) to be put on the list, and then send your payment right away. ?

?

The fee for an RV campsite is a very reasonable $25 per day which includes water, electric, and sewer if requested.? If you don’t plug into the electricity, it is only $20 per day (honor system, please).??(Note: No generators are permitted).? In addition there is a one-time registration fee of $10 to cover the costs of putting on this multi-day Rally.??The full fee is to be paid when you register with US — not with the RV Park as previously. ?NOTE: This park does NOT have unlimited dry camping space like the other rally locations, so you need to be paid up and be on the list to get in.? If you cancel, your full payment is refundable upon request, if another Toyota RVer takes over your reservation, less a $10 cancellation fee.?

?

You need to send us your total registration fee in advance via Zelle, Paypal, or check.? The address for electronic funds transfer or for US mail will be provided when you call to register. ?

?

To encourage folks to pay soon, the $10 "Early-Bird" price is for registrations paid before December 27th.? If you wait until the last 3 weeks, the registration fee goes up to $20 (plus nightly fees) — but that is only if spots are still available. ?

?

If we have more folks wanting to come than we have spots, we will be creating a waiting list.? If for some reason you are not able to attend, please let us know as soon as possible so your spot can be given to someone on the waiting list this year.?

?

So you can know more about what to expect, the first attachment to this email is the video panorama that was taken at a previous year’s Rally, in case you haven’t seen it.? Many of you who were there are in the video.? Also attached is a short video taken at this year’s RV park.??The park is rather basic, but it has hook-ups, and it will basically be all ours!?

?

Now here below are some additional Rally details:

?

The annual RV Show in Quartzsite is a really fun event with free admission. ? A giant show tent is erected with hundreds of vendors that cater to RVers.? They also present dozens of Seminars about various topics related to RVing.??You can view a list of them on RV Show’s website (see the link below).?

?

In addition to the RV Show’s “Big Tent,” the rest of the town turns into one giant swap meet.? There are specific sections for antiques, gems & minerals, and new merchandise.? This year the "Pow Wow" Gem and Mineral Show will be taking place at the Community Center (walking distance across the street) during the first few days of our Rally, if you would like to go to it (like on Friday). ?Plus there are multiple other vendors in town in every possible corner and location.? If you like to shop for bargains, bring lots of cash spending money with you.? The ATMs in town have expensive fees.

?

This RV Park where we will be is reasonably close to the RV show grounds — close enough to walk to the “Big Tent” if you are fit, without having to break camp each day to drive to the show.? (The distance is about .8 miles, over the bridge over the Interstate.)

?

The “Big Tent” opens on Saturday.? However, attending on the weekdays is a bit more relaxing if you don’t want to contend with the biggest crowds.

?

In addition to the RV Show and Swap Meets, this Rally is a great chance to meet other Toyota RVers, and see what they have done to personalize their "Toyhouses."? We will again have an informal "Open House" when folks can view each other's vehicles and see the various ingenious things that owners have done to make them more livable and unique.? Participation is totally optional — if you are not comfortable having visitors in your own RV, that’s fine — you can still walk around to talk with others about theirs. ?

?

This year we will be having both true “Potlucks” (Saturday evening) and “Community Meals.”? A Community Meal means you bring your own dinner, but we can sit around together to eat.? Those who want to join us can bring your own lawn chair to sit and eat.? Sunday evening we may decide to go to a restaurant as a group for dinner.??Please also bring some firewood for the campfires we'll be having every evening.??

?

Sunday morning at about 9:30 am we will again have a discussion about “All-Things-Related-to-Toyota-RVs.”? Join us if you have questions about something about your rig, but also if you have expertise to share.?

?

At the RV Park where we will be, we will have hook-ups. ?12 of the sites in the RV park have sewer connections; please request one if you intend to hook up to it for the duration of the Rally.??Those who only need water and electric hook-ups can dump when necessary at a designated site.? Generators are not allowed.??It is recommended to arrive with your tank full of propane, but if you need more, it is sold down the street. ?The laundromat across the street has very nice showers for a fee, (as well as washers and dryers).

?

The weather will be moderate during the day (60s-70s) and cool at night (40s), and possibly windy. ? We could also get rain and severe winds like we had a few years ago.

?

Bikes and/or scooters are great to have to get into town.? Pets are welcome, but large dogs can be awkward in the main show tent when it is crowded, and small dogs might get stepped on, if not carried.?

?

WiFi internet service is not available at this property. ?However it is available indoors at various restaurants /fast food /truck stops in town.? Cell phone service is adequate for most carriers, but expect personal hot-spots to run VERY slowly due to the quantity of RVers using the limited number of cell towers in the area. ?Free Internet computers are available at the Library for those who need a reliable internet connection for business.? Broadcast TV reception is practically non-existent, and as we said, you can expect video streaming connections to be frustratingly slow. ?As an alternative, unless you have satellite TV, the local Quartzsite “Oldies” Radio station is the most delightful entertainment.?

?

A reminder for those coming from the Pacific Time Zone, that Arizona time is one hour later.? You’ll need to advance your clocks when you come east across the border.

?

Please secure your reservation with a prompt payment.? Let us know which nights you will be coming, and how many folks and pets will be coming with you.? If you have guests who are coming in separate vehicles, we’d like to know that in advance so we can plan parking spots for them.? As always, we are only going to have camping spots for those that have paid ahead of time in the order your payment is received.? If you don't want to be disappointed this year by hearing that the Rally is already full, please pay soon.??The exact address (and GPS coordinates) can be sent once you have paid.?

?

If you are new to Rallies, don't be shy -- we always have several first-time attendees. ?CALL us at 626-798-4510 with any questions.? Call any day 10am - 7pm Pacific time.? Leave a message if you get the voicemail for our business (health center), and we will call you back. ?

?

Yes, it's gonna be fun again!

Re: Need 22R Engine replacement for my 1982 Sunrader JTRN44DOC0052810

How about repairing or rebuilding the motor that’s in there Julia? Do you know what’s the matter with it? Has anyone done a leak down test, compression test? Is it making a lot of noise? Is it seized up? I missed your first text about this, so forgive me if replacing it is your only choice. If so there was a spare motor sitting somewhere south of Tucson I believe a gal was trying to sell with her (Starlite?) Linda I bet you remember this one. Only got a couple of lookers a year or so about. But she was trying to sell it for at least a year before that it seems.

Re: Need 22R Engine replacement for my 1982 Sunrader JTRN44DOC0052810

I would have a shop, remove the engine or remove it myself then take the engine block and head to a machine shop have them rebuild the engine block and head. You will have an essentially brand new engine probably will cost about $6000. At least, but will be like new.

Doug, I agree with you. I have been told the same by multiple mechanics from
The Toyota dealership, Midas, a Napa auto care center and on and on. Currently landlocked in st. Augustine due to this same issue and quite frankly, I’m shocked because I heard nothing but 22 RE’s were easy to work on and to find people to work on them.?

I agree with Linda S. that Cal MiniTruck has a good reputation. ?They have installed engines for me twice previously (about 10 years ago or so) into RVs that I refurbished for resale ?They do provide a reasonable warranty. ?In each case, I had to wait for awhile, while they sourced an engine with low enough miles for my taste, and it was priced accordingly a bit higher. ?However those two particular RVs are still on the road as of last year. ?The nice feature about these guys is that they regularly scour all the SoCal auto auctions daily and will find you whatever you specifically request and then acquire it and install it. ?Their number is 909-622-1381. ?Evidently they have 2 websites. ?Here is their other one. ?
Since you don't seem to be in a hurry, I would go with them, and let them get you a replacement engine.?

Re: Need 22R Engine replacement for my 1982 Sunrader JTRN44DOC0052810

Only think finding a motorhome engine would be important because RV's normally have low miles compared to a truck. Scott it says right in the title her motorhome is a 1982. Carbureted 22r was the only option back then.?
Cal minitruck handles other types of small trucks but they only rebuild Toyota engines and they've been doing it for years. Cost for towing would be less than that other guy she talked to is jacking up the price of a used motor with no guarantee. Going anywhere else just doesn't make sense to me.?

To me a big concern is how to handle the guarantee and warranty? situation.? Here is the prospect of spending lots of money for motor and labor and then finding out the motor does not run well or is worn out or smokes heavily or leaks oil or overheats etc.? ?I think the best source of a motor ( maybe dreaming here)? would be a wrecked Toy RV that had a good running motor in it.? ?Plucking a used motor from a salvage yard has to have its risks because how can you know what kind of condition it is in?? ?What about the companies that claim to sell rebuilt or remanufactured motors ?? ?Maybe with warranties .... I dont know.? ? This is I think similar to the situation with transmissions .....? but probably
a lot bigger.? ?I am a little surprised that your motor is a 22R? the carburated model instead of the Fuel Injection model being a 1987.? ? My RV is a 1985 model with the RE version of the engine.

Browsing the LKQ website is an interesting lesson in basic economics.
?
I observed used engines priced as low as $366. I saw one engine priced around $10k.
?
One of the $366 engines was for a Honda CR-Z. That's a comparatively rare model so one might expect the price to be higher. However,
it is also a fairly reliable and inexpensive car, so the demand for engines is quite low. I suspect a typical CR-Z owner with a blown engine
would junk the car rather than spend $5k on installing a used engine.
?
On the other hand, the $10K engine was a 6.2-liter out of a 2010s-era Camaro. Between Camaro enthusiasts, GM truck enthusiasts,
and the community of car modifiers with the default strategy of "Drop an LS1/LS2/LS6 in it!" there will be enormous demand for
that engine, and LQK is pricing it accordingly.
?
I suspect some of the high quotes Julia has received are partially based on the belief that a Toyota RV owner is either an enthusiast
who will pay a premium to keep their vehicle running or (and I think this may be somewhat specific to California) the owner is
living in the RV (due to the high cost of housing) and will tolerate a higher price in order to keep their "home" in running order.
?
I hope Julia finds a shop with more reasonable pricing, soon.

Just so you know what Chris is all about. That engine with 104,215 miles is at El Rey salvage yard for 1400. He's adding a thousand bucks to the price. Not good

Had an engine delivered from this company to our mechanic and it's been wonderful!
?
Highly recommend them. It was a 94 Toyota truck engine and fit perfectly. Gasket kit addition highly recommended.

Chris, the owner of this truck and RV repair been in business since 1960,

called me today to report he found two 22R used engines.

1. 104,215 miles used engine for $2400.

2. 127,000 miles used engine for $1900.

I bought this Sunrader Shorty with 110,000 miles on it year 2000.

Chris said he has 1 acre lot and the mechanics who know such old things as mine, and so he charges $175/hr labor to install. He will give me 10% senior discount on the parts OR labor, which ever is the GREATER price.

When I told him people in my Toyota Motorhome forum of 5000 members, said they found 22R engines for $350, he said there are a lot of our Toyota motorhomes still out there, and so the demand for these scarce engines get the price that he is quoting (over $2000 for used) and they sell in a day or two. Do you think that is true? I don’t think a 22R will sit on the shelf for more than 3 weeks, even that 155,000 miles one costing $2000.

I looked at JDM California and San Diego, but they don't have anything "that OLD". I need to weigh the price of a remanufactured engine, vs a used engine. If the used ones are gonna cost $2000, as I have been quoted so far, how much is a remanufactured engine? I assume the business that found the engine, won’t let me have it, tell me where it is, or tell me how to acquire it, unless I agree to letting them do the labor to install it. Isn’t that the way it goes?
