Re: Headers
Hi Group,
I just wanted to say that on my '83 Dolphin 22R I installed a Thourley header, K&N air filter, Weber carb, and an exhaust with Thrush muffler that exits under the furnace vent on the drivers side, about three feet back from the cab (less pipe and back pressure). Not only has performance improved noticeably, mileage has improved by 3-4 miles per gallon. Pat |
Headers: + 22re power.
Most of my performance info comes from the groups
that run the 4x4 Toyotas. They run the same engines we do. (very few auto trans' here.) They run headers, 2 1/4" pipe, a low loss cat and a good muffler. They are getting a noticeable performance gain and better MPG. Many also run the K+N air input filters and boxes, but there is a lot of pro and con (mostly con) on whether these help the 22re. These engines must breath pretty well stock. IMO a header add on would be the way to go if you were going to replace all, or part of your exhaust system anyway. To take off a good system and replace it with a high performance system, I don't think would be worth the cost. I have not anywhere seen the HP increase numbers, but from my experience with other well designed engines, big power boosts do not come from bolt on changes. (Superchargers excepted.) A 22re with internal changes, and a cam, headers etc, can be made to put out 150 HP. For fun take a look below. http:/www.doaracingengines.com All the above only applies to the 22re. The 20 and 22r Can always use some bolt on help. Jack A2 |

I got a good power inverter with fan from PEP boys [ about $85.00 ] and it
runs my computer and the tv at the same time. C. Howard Walker -----Original Message----- From: Michael Smith [mailto:msmith@...] Sent: Saturday, April 21, 2001 8:13 PM To: toyota-campers@... Subject: [toyota-campers] flat screen I'd like to get a laptop computer for my Sunrader. I also would like to watch tv on it. Does anyone know if this is doable on a laptop? I would like to be able to plug a VCR into it as well. Space is at a premium in these smaller rigs and I would like to be able to compute on the road. There were a few websites that were really valuable on our last trip. It would be great to have a CD of the entire BLM website. There was another website that covered the Southwest that had all the state parks, us forest service, blm and a couple of other camping sites on one website. That is exackly what I just bought and I love it . Mine has had the axel
recall but the price I paid was the same as yours. C. Howard Walker -----Original Message----- From: vadm_vic@... [mailto:vadm_vic@...] Sent: Friday, April 20, 2001 4:59 PM To: toyota-campers@... Subject: [toyota-campers] 1983 Dolphin - question I've been looking for a Toyota motorhome for a while now and have heard several things that concern me, like the 4 cyl engine and the wheels in the back. I've just found a 1983 Dolphin with 98,000 miles, 4 cyl, stick shift, he's asking $5,500. I could sure use some advise. headers on the 22RE?
Britt wrote:
My question today is has anyone with the 22RE (2.4 liter 4 cy) done I was wondering about this myself. I appreciated the link to APE, thanks JackA2. I recently called a local Toyota dealer which also has a motorhome dealership and asked about headers. The service manager said that they put a lot of headers on class A RVs but not the microminis, and referred me to a custom muffler shop in town. The mechanic there said he wouldn't put headers on the 22RE Toyota engine, that the flow in the manifold is really good in these and a header isn't necessary, and that they're often trouble. He said they rattle, break down, and are more trouble than they're worth, and they wouldn't increase performance very much on this particular vehicle. I know a mechanic in Springfield who has headers on his '66 Chevelle and he said he wouldn't put them on if he could do it over, that they ruin his clearance (I guess he means they make it hard to work on the engine because they take up a lot of room) and he'd go for a carbeurator upgrade (I think he said a Corvette carb) instead next time. Is there anyone who can speak from experience on the benefits/drawbacks of headers in the 22RE engine? Also, thanks Jack R. for the tach information, that was great. My husband wondered how to get the wiring through the firewall; is it difficult, or are there existing holes for this purpose? thanks, Rosannah |

Re: Tach-W/Auto Re: Jack R.

Hi Britt,
The tach cost $30 (the one with the chrome bezel is a little more). It is 2 1/2 inches in diameter made by Actron. It can be set for 4, 6, and 8 cylinder engines. It reads up to 8000 rpm, and has a moveable marker to set for the redline for your particular engine. Four wires had to be connected: a hot wire; a ground wire; a wire to the + side of the coil, and a wire to the instrument lights. The installation kit comes with everything you need to hook it up. The mounting bracket is bolted horizontally to the side of the instrument cluster cover on my '86. Later models with the curved cover will need a little more study to find the best location. My spot is a good location, just a glance to the left and you see the reading. You hardly have to take your eyes off the road. I was not sure that a tach would be worthwhile with an automatic, but I find myself checking it quiet often. As a side, I also installed a cruise control that I bought from J.C. Whitney for $69. I find that I do not use it very much, but it does work. It will only hold a maximum speed of 60 mph for some reason. I may need to adjust the throttle linkage, or maybe it needs more vaccum for higher speeds. Glad to help. I got my tach at Pep Boys and mounted it just above the
left side a/c vent. Pretty easy installation. Jack R From: jacka2@..._________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at |

Hey Buddy, at 55 mph my tach reads 3200 in 3rd and 2400 in 4th.Jack R. Thanks for the info. It is just what I was looking for. Last Feb was my first trip into hills. I drove it by ear and always shifted out of OD and went up the hills at 55 mph. From the feel I figured I was turning 3800 rpm, great to know I was turning 3200. Did you put in the tach? I wonder where it is mounted. I will be puting one in next month. Jack A2 |

Tachometer-W/Auto Trans?
Does anyone have a Tach on their auto trans
rig? I would like to know what my RPMs are in the various gears. It looks like a Tachometer would be a must, along with a trans cooler if we are to get max life out of our A-43d Trans. BTW: I'm naming my rig "OLD 97" in keeping with it's "top of the mountain" performance. (some of us may remember that old RR Folk song.) :0) Jack A2 Owner and operator of "Old 97". |
