Coach Battery?
I have an 1986 Damon Escaper, 21ft camper. I have had the unit for a
year and have been unable to locate a second battery in the unit. I only have one battery under the hood. I have checked the camper pretty good and still no luck finding coach battery. The fuse and breaker box and the converter/charger are all under my sink area. I've check under my couch and every other possible location. I think that I must have only one battery. Does anyone esle have just the one battery set-up in their Toyota camper? Every other Toyota camper I've seen has had two batteries, either under the hood or one under a couch in the back. Just Wondering, Nate |
shower/tub + window gaskets
tika, re. tubs in Toyota rvs: I noticed the shower depth on our '88
Odyssey is around 5-6 inches deep, plenty deep for a young child. The shower has a mini-wall/step over divider between the carpeted bathroom area and on the inside of the shower. The backing on this divider is continous with the shower, essentially making it a potential shallow tub that doesn't look like it would leak. One could block the drain with one of those flat rubber lay-on-top type of shower/bath drain plugs, let the shower run, and fill up a few inches for a child's bath; we'll probably do this with our 16 month- old this summer. Also, I was wondering how people repair the old brown rubber gaskets/caulk/seal on the outside of the windows of the rv. The corner where the seal ends meet is starting to crack/look dry and old and we were thinking of just applying some silicone caulk or something like that to the end joint area to avoid leaks. Is replacing the gaskets altogether very expensive? Any information regarding window gasket maintenance/repair would be much appreciated. thanks, Rosannah |

You may have a point. There is a used car sales sticker from Indiana on the RV could have stoped there on it's way down to Fl. Fl. Snake --- In toyota-campers@y..., jacka2@e... wrote:

Harvey,
What a nice guy! And I think your analysis of the air conditioner problem is right on. Too much juice is going into charging the battery at the onset. Hope you find just the motorhome you want. Sudbury diesel engine and any Toyota RVs
I live in Toronto. Sudbury is about a 4 hour drive north.
Anyone passing through, or nearby, Toronto is welcome to visit me. I live close to downtown if you enjoy museums etc.; I can accomodate one small RV and supply elec [15 Amp] and water. I know where the dump locations are. The only payment would be telling me about your Toyota RV and allowing me to have a look at it. I am searching for a Toyota RV and think I have a good idea of what layout and equipment I need. But, who knows, maybe your setup will change my mind. And, I always enjoy learning more. AC not working properly
The AC that requires an overnight connection to 120V before it will operate puzzles me.
Do I understand your posting correctly? [A] When connected to 120v, but not overnight, the AC attempts to start, but can't. [B] After your RV has been connected to 120v overnight, it works well. During A, will the fan only setting work? During B, does the AC work fine continuously for at least an hour? The first question that comes to mind is whether the 120v is low. The AC will attempt to start on low voltage but will stop when the motor overheats. Are you hooked up at home, or a CG? Have you checked the "quality" of your 120v at the AC location? However, the AC working well after an overnight 120v connection would lead me in the direction of a problem with the 120/12 volt system. Perhaps the battery charger [or something else] is presenting enough load resulting in a dip of the 120v to a low voltage situation. Overnight the batteries are charged, removing the load. The above comments are based on your reporting that the AC works fine at certain times. If that is not correct, then other problems come to mind. Look forward to hearing what the problem and solution is for this AC. (Check an outlet in the camper, with a volt meter WHILE the Air-Con is running). If your Air-Con has an adjustable knob to turn it up or down, run it back and forth and maybe clean it with some contact cleaner. NOT WD-40. That is all you can do. Your unit is 10 years old don't be suprised to find these kind of things that need fixing. Get it repaired, or run this season without it. Jack A2 |

Run it for a few days continuous, then shut down for a day and retest. If no work, it will have to be serviced by an air- con shop. Start looking around. Maybe a near-by RV dealer can help. Remember, the AC unit uses R-12 a little expensive, hard to find, but not impossible. Some shops are still servicing them. Keep the list posted as others will run into the same problem. Re: New to the game
This message is for Rhonda (and Andrew too).
There is lots of advice on this site about what to look for in a motorhome regarding the truck chassis and engine. But here is some additional advice from a female about the coach itself. Be sure to check out the air conditioning (both cab and roof units) and especially the refrigerator very carefully. These items are the most expensive to repair apart from the engine and chassis, ($200 - $800+ ea.). So before you buy, turn them on and run them for a while to be sure they are putting out optimum cold. The fridge may need to run for several hours to reach its peak, then check it with a fridge thermometer. If it's not colder than 45¡ã you may have a problem fridge. The older the model year the more chance the fridge is worn out. If an RV is not parked really level when the fridge is operating, it not only won't keep as cold, but it causes the fridge to lose its effectiveness over time. That's why you see RVers with all sorts of levels, ramps, jacks, boards, rocks, etc. under their coaches. It's more for the fridge than the occupants! Also check out the fresh water tank. Run the sink and shower and smell it. If a coach has been sitting for a while it can become quite foul, and need some major disinfecting to get rid of the bacterial growth. Check these items carefully because you don't want spoiled food or nasty water to be making you sick when you're out to have fun. Good luck, Tika P.S. $5000 sounds too high for a '79; maybe that much if it was an '84. A fairer price would be about $2500 - $3000 if it is in nice condition. However, if you like it, get it; and you'll have joined the ranks of Toyota motorhome owners. -- In toyota-campers@y..., ne_sandhills@h... wrote: I have never owned an RV before and I want something as abeginning unit. I have to agree with the previous poster. If you want to get a good deal on a Toyota Rv watch RV Trader and all the newspaper want adds in the area you are willing to travel to and be prepared to move fast. I mean real fast. Have your money in hand for a deposit and answer the majority of that plethora of questions yourself. If I was selling an Rv and got that laundry list I would blow you off in a big hurry. Don't get me wrong they are good questions, but most should be asked durning the negotiating process and YOUR mechanics check. Andrew's list and V-6 mis-info.
Andrew.
You forgot one item that states: "Please find enclosed $200 for your trouble, and for the cost of hiring a mechanic to "Certify" this machine." :0) IMO it would be a lot easier for the seller to just sell to someone else. If these rigs are priced right and in good shape they sell fast...Especially this time of year. As for the V-6: I see the error I read in another post is being repeated. It is, un- fortunatly, not the gasket that warps, it is the head that warps from being over heated after the gasket has blown on the road. If a V-6 engine has been taken in for new gaskets on recall, and not because they failed you could possibly get a good engine. But then maybe not. These engines are still giving problems, and I am reading tale after tale of battles with the dealers and Toyota over repairs. In many, heads and even blocks, have had to be replaced because they overheated when the gaskets blew. In some cases the bearings and cylinder walls are wiped out when the coolant is dumped in to the oil. I suspect, as with a couple of auto trans on our list, these bad engines will be patched up and quickly sold. If you get one, Toyota may not help you. The only way to protect yourself, (if you must have that mere 35 Hp over the 22Re) is to quiz the seller on the head gaskets. If you discover they blew on the road, do not buy the truck. Thats all you can do short of paying for a pre- sale engine tear down. Good luck. Jack A2 |
