1991 Dolphin

I saw a Toyota Dolphin for sale today while I was en route to work
and pulled over to take a quick look at it. Oddly enough, before we
bought the Odyssey a few weeks ago, I had seen this rig while driving
by and considered knocking on the door of the owner's house to ask if
they were interested in selling it, it looked so nice from the
outside.
A couple of weeks later, they've got it up for sale. I thought some
list members might be interested in some details, the price, etc.

It's a '91 Dolphin with fiberglass siding. I didn't know Dolphins
came in fiberglass models. No ladder or roof rack, it's 22 ft long
and has 29,182 miles on the V6 automatic engine.

The main thing I noticed when I walked inside was how light it was in
there. Our Odyssey has tinted windows, which make it much darker
inside (though the tinted windows have their advantages, I noticed
how much more spacious the interior of the Dolphin appeared with the
clear windows). I think I prefer the tinted windows overall,
considering privacy, shade, and blockage of stray light at night--
though the clear windows are pretty nice. What are listmembers'
opinions on tinted/clear windows?

The interior was light blue velour uphostery with creme carpet. The
upholstery and carpet were actually less clean than in our Odyssey
despite being newer and less travelled. It had the exact same layout
as our Odyssey (Santa Fe model), with captain's chair behind the
front passenger seat, bench/bed behind the driver's seat, full bed
above the cab, street-side kitchen, curbside L-couch and rear
bathroom (shower step/wall was not as deep). The main difference I
noted was the captain's chair and L-couch had seatbelts, unlike the
Odyssey model. The floor seemed firmer than our rig; what makes a
floor slightly "springy" (hopefully not the need for an expensive
fix), does anyone have ideas?

At any rate, it was a nice motorhome, in very good condition. I
asked about the head gasket and at first the owner said there'd been
no problems with it and when I mentioned the recall he said the
Toyota dealership had called him and replaced the head gasket a while
ago. He was the 3rd owner and his asking price is $12,000. I asked
if he was firm on that price and he said no; he'd probably consider
any offers. If anyone looking for a later model Dolphin wants to
give him a call, his # is 510-484-6729. (I mentioned I was on a
Toyota micromini list and that I'd like to post the details of his
rig to the list when asking for his number and he seemed fine with
that.) It seemed like a nice vehicle, inside and out, nothing
overtly wrong or damaged, and nothing a steam cleaning wouldn't spiff
up. Interesting to see that this later model Toyota interior hadn't
changed much, although the cab looked quite different, more like the
90s Toyota cabs. Overall, seemed like a nice motorhome, though more
than we were looking to spend at this time.

I'M ALMOST SURE IT WILL FIT.
GETTING IT FOR LESS THAN $250,
NOT BAD.

Jerry,

If the price is right it is probibly worth buying even if you have to do
some small fixes. You can always pass it along to someone on the list that
can use it. How much do they want for it?

Tires

I have a 21ft Escaper, I have 8 ply tires on the rear duallys and
regular 4 ply radials on the front. I have the air bags in the back
and I feel every bump. My rear air shocks are over 50psi and I plan on
letting some air out of them to see if I can smooth out my ride.

Re: Timing chains 22 and 22re.

Hello Group, Jack, and Dick:

I found this while surfing...at:

Their quote, not mine.
"This is a no-brainer - if you are rebuilding, due for a new timing
chain, or your existing guides have broken, I wholeheartedly
recommend using these guides to improve your engine's reliability."
- Eric Johnson, Product Review, Off-Road.com, March 1999

These metal backed guides (sold in guides only or a full timing set)
are intended to replace the factory's plastic offerings. This guide
set is guaranteed for the life of your motor - no questions asked.
Bottom line, they will not break, and the 22r weak link has now been
resolved. There is no longer any reason to worry about single row
chain guide failure.
Timing set includes: Upper and lower gears, metal backed guides, high
quality chain, chain tensioner, main seal (high quality), gaskets and
hardware.

Metal Backed Guides (per set) $65
Full Timing Set ('85 and later) $201
Full Timing Set ('84 and earlier - double row) $150

Tires

Hello Scott and group:

I have some questions on tires. I think I have 6 ply on my rig, and
am sure they are the origional ones, from 1987.

I read that if you go with steel belted radials this will give you a
better ride, and up your mileage.

But, you guys are talking about 4, 6, and 8 ply. What are the
advantages/disadvantages of each?

Also wondered if you have the air shock system in yours?

I feel every bump with my rig and wondered if this is caused by the
stiffness of springs (I have no air shocks) or the tires.

Thanks,

Britt

Hi Nina,

Probably the reason that you can't find anything in the archives is
the spelling.? The proper spelling is Rogue, and there are
several posts.?

Regarding pricing, you can find "Blue Book" prices (guidelines)
at .? I just looked up the Rogue for 1986
and is shows between $6800 and $8300 for that mileage (low),
so $7500 is about right.? According to them the Rogues were
only made in 1986 and 87.?

Once you're sure you like the floorplan, be sure to test the
various systems, especially the ones that are expensive to fix,
like the A/C and Fridge.

What city was the Rogue in by the way???

All of these Micro-Mini Mhos are much the same regardless
of the Mfg. All the units are on Toyota Chassis (at least
on this list) and the faults and merits of this chassis
apply to all.

Read all of the Archives before you go out to look. And
most certainly do your home work before you buy.

I'm in New Orleans at a library that's about 20 miles away from the
city. It was a terrible windy trip - so windy that my arms were

I
can do to make the steering better. I'm used to the semi's, but
the
gusts of wind are really scary sometimes. Maybe I need an alignment
or
can get some sort of stabilizer bar, or shocks, or SOMETHING. This
is
no fun to drive in the wind!!!!!!!!!!

At the conference, I had trouble parking the RV. No one wanted to
let
me park in their lot - even though it will fit in one parking
space.
The Hilton parking lot (which was the hotel for the conference and
adjacent to the convention center) wanted to charge me $55.00 to
park
for one day - yes you read it right.....DAY parking. They charged
cars $15.00/day. In addition, I finally found a lot to take my RV
and
was late for the presentation. I was the last of three to present
so
it worked out OK. When I parked the RV there was a guy sleeping on
the ground up against the building where I parked. It took me an
hour
and a half to drive the 18 miles into the city because of the
traffic!

I'm sorry if anyone on this list is from New Orleans, but I find it
to
be a dangerous, dirty, depressing, and unfriendly city. I'll think
twice if I ever return here! Even the librarians were rude at the
library I'm at now! *sigh*

I'm filing this trip under "The Trip from you know where"!

"Zia"
Zia, sorry to hear of your problems on your trip. You may want to
check with your local auto parts store to see if they carry a
Steering stabilizer that can be installed on the steering linkage of
your rig. These stabilizers look like a shock absorber and are
attached with brackets that are provided. They run about $40.00 and
are fairly easy to install. I had a 77 dodge, 23' class "C" that
would change lanes and buffett all over the place in a side wind. I
installed the stabilizer and it made a remarkable difference. I felt
more at ease and was able to relax a little more while driving. My 91
has one on it but not sure if it was an add on or orig. eqpt. It
handles fine.I have rear air shocks, but am thinking about adding air
bags after hearing others talk about their advantages. Good luck,
hope we can help with advice. Hope someone near you can help with the
problem, as we all need help on occasion. Stan in Michigan

Re: GVWR: Toyota 21' with 22RE Auto Trans

Britt,

I guess you are going to have to lose a little weight and travel alone.
Sorry just kidding, but your question makes a good point that we are
generally overweight or damn close. Does it mean your rig is going to break?
No not with the good axle, but it does mean that braking distances are not
ideal and that we must handle our rigs with extra care and that we should
travel with empty fresh water and gray and black water tanks.

I have some concerns. Inside my truck AND in the manual the GVWR =

I have the good 1 ton rear axle (6 bolts on both front and rear).

Well, I took it and got it weighed.....with JUST me and a full tank

it!!!! Has anyone else weighed theirs?

OR, can anyone with the same length Toyota check what their GVWR is?

Re: Rear Air shocks?

Michael Smith

Rear shocks smooth out the ride and dampen spring bounce. Tires seem to make
the most difference in not feeling every bump. If you put some high quility
steel belted radials on your rig and a heavy duty shock like the KY you
should get a much smoother ride and better fuel milage over bias ply tires.

More GVWR questions......If I'm already over my listed GVWR weight,

much more over can I safely go?
