88 Odyssey trans: I agree...

With Jack R on a lot of points, and as long as
you are willing to budget in the cost of an early
transmission replacement (check around on prices,
Toyota dealer too) ,the rest of the machine
sounds great.

The 22RE engine is one of the best and many run
200-400k trouble free. A timing chain check at
around 150k is advised. Check sooner if you hear
noise at start up. No lifters or push rods are used
in this (OHC) engine, so if you hear rattles it's
probably the timing chain.

The chain guides are plastic and these fail first.
(Remove the valve cover and peak in with a flash
light).

One last note on the "red flags". The A-43D auto
trans is one of the best. It should not fail in
such low mileage. The fluid should never have been
low enough to burn up, unless it ran out on the
ground. With Tucker,(glzontop) her trans went out
with white smoke, yet was full of fluid.

And as for "Rebuilt" trans, rebuild is in the eye
of the beholder. Was it really rebuilt, or only
repaired. (most seem to just replace the torque
converter, an easy bolt in job of a high priced
part.) What of the rest of the unit? what shape
is it in after being smoked ?

I feel the truck (22ft) was already too heavy,
then overloaded some more. Mountains, heat, took
an otherwise good trans to an early failure.

As I stated in another post a few weeks back
I believe many of these units that have had the
trans repaired once, show signs of failure again,
and the owner sells it right away. Buyer beware!

Re: 1988 Odossey

Rosannah,
I agree with Jack R.'s thoughts regarding your possible purchase. We
are forced to buy used units, which all require repairs from time to
time. You are doing the right thing by doing your homework and asking
alot of questions. There are not any sure things, so be as informed as
possible and make the decision that is right for you.
Good Luck,
Nate

agree with the newest posting about car seats, and make sure the seat
belts are bolted through the floor and have big washers under/over the

instructions.Good luck with kids/seats.

Re: 1988 Odyssey

Jack Redman

Hi Rosannah, I hope you are not totally confused now about
buying the '88 Odyssey. I still think you should get it, and
here is why -

1. They do not make these campers any more, and this group
thinks they are great. So if you want one you are going to
have to buy a used one.

2. Just because the transmission has been rebuilt should not
scare you away. Judge the camper as a total package, ie.,
appearance, cleanliness, features, etc. If the transmission
goes out, then have it fixed, but enjoy the camper. We all
expect to do repairs on our units In toyota. Personally, I
think your rebult transmission may a strong point for buying
the camper.

3. If you do not buy this camper I think you will regret not
doing so. It sounds like a beautiful camper at a good price.
It is located close to you, and you are dealing with the owner,
not some salesman.

Jack R

Seatbelts

I have the side dinnet and there are Belts
for 4 and they face back and forward, I do
not think it would be safe on a couch as the
force would go sideways, all car seats should be
front to back or back to front, not able on the
couch set ups. You can amend in some way the belts
and the couch area for safty as a firm backing
of wood behind the driver seat to the overhead bunk
attached to the floor and overhead framing, and put
the car seat back up to the paneling.Cover the wood
in a carpet to match what you have.Use 2/4 Ply min.
and a long mettal L braket at the floor.

Odyssey/transmission

Hi jacka2--thanks for your warnings, they've made me think twice, and
then some. I did read the archives, and it looks like $1000-1200 is
the going price for a transmission repair (girzontop paid $1050 for
his rebuild). I'm not sure why a failed transmission is a red flag,
but then I'm not a mechanic. If it's been rebuilt, and the fluids
are maintained and it's not driven hard, why would it necessarily
fail again? I'm not sure why they didn't check the levels, as the
transmission dipstick is easily accessed, but it does raise some
questions in my mind about the way they maintained the vehicle,
though it looks great in every other sense. I printed out some posts
from this list and will ask my husband to ask the mechanic to look at
the current owners' paperwork to see if the job was done properly,
and to do a road test up a few big hills and on the highway. I'll
let you know what the mechanic says.

best,

Rosannah

More details re. the Odyssey: It has a 22RE engine with EFI, AT
w/OD, and it's a 22 ft. rig. It has a ladder, roof rack, awning,
lots of storage space, 4 cyl. generator, AC in cab and in back,
microwave--- overall it seems like a really nice MH. I don't know
about the transmission cooler but we'll look into that. Sounds like
they were factory installed in the '88 models, though.

I spoke with the sellers today and they say that there's no tow
hitch
and they don't think it's never towed a vehicle. They said that
they
simply let the transmission fluid get too low, didn't check it
before
a trip and while they were driving, "white smoke came pouring out
all
of a sudden." They had to get the transmission replaced in Oregon
City and have all the paperwork, which we're going to check out
before purchasing (and see if the warrantee is transferrable). It
sounds like the motorhome wasn't abused, just neglected one trip,
which cost them $1000 to fix. Doh! I asked the owner how it does
when fully loaded driving down the highway and she said it goes 65
on
the open road, maybe 40 on steep inclines, she wasn't sure since she
never drove. (Doesn't sound too different from the 4 cyl. Toyota
pickups I've owned!)

We're going to get it checked before purchasing (we're having the
compression, axle, bearings, transmission, etc. tested by a Toyota-
certified shop tomorrow), and if everything looks okay, we hope to
purchase it. The couple seem very honest, and the whole vehicle
looks very well-maintained, more so than the others I've seen. The
engine looks clean, no obvious leaks, and the fluids looked clear,
not dirty, and the interior is just about spotless. The brother of
the woman who owns it is apparently mechanically inclined and he
said
that the engine is in terrific shape, and that aside from the
transmission glitch, they've maintained it very well. It looks it,
at least from a surface inspection.

My husband looked at a '91 Dolphin today and he said it wasn't as
nice, though it did have a V6 (w/61K mi). We considered purchasing
this one, but the dealer, who told me on Saturday that it was
selling
for $12,500, informed us today that the selling price is actually
$15,500. I'm not sure what happened over the weekend, but we can't
afford the current price, and the interior was, in my husband's
opinion, much more worn/stained than the Odyssey and didn't have as
nice a layout. We've had 3 Toyota trucks (no automatics, though)
and always were served well by them, and I'm hoping the same will be
true for the one we eventually buy.

We're travelling to the east coast in July with our two children,
and
hope to find the right rig to get us there and back safely and
comfortably. The Odyssey might be it, we'll know sooner or later,
and should have some good info tomorrow after the inspection. I
noticed another list member had asked about car seats and using the
couch seatbelts--does anyone know for sure whether the couch can be
used with a toddler carseat? Our 4 year-old would do fine with the
regular seatbelts, I'm mostly concerned about our younger child.
Any
information/references appreciated. I'll look into this myself and
let folks know if I come up with any definite information.

Rosannah
IMHO you are about to make a very bad buy. A blown tranmission
cannot be repaired correctly for $1000, nor do transmissions
use up fluid, it had to of leaked out. Look out!

Read the Archives of this list. See trans problems and costs.

There are over 100 Toyota based MHos for sale on RV trader.

I'm in the process of geting quotes on a trans

We are considering purchasing a 1988 Toyota Odyssey (w/fiberglass

has a new transmission, new tires, new water pump (to sink, etc.,
not

microwave,
tv, tv/radio, nice fridge, carpet runners, recently resealed roof,

asking
$8500 for it. They put over $2000 into it over the last year, and
the blue book ranges between $6000+ up to around $9000, so it seems
like a fair asking price.

I was wondering what the folks on this list think of the price, and
whether there's any problems with the Odyssey that people have
encountered. Should we put a transmission cooler on it before
setting out on the road? We're going across country this summer and
hope to make it there and back without mechanical problems. It's a
beautiful motorhome (we looked at several and this is the nicest
I've seen for the price) and I'd like to buy it, providing the
mechanic's inspection indicates it's trip-worthy. Any information
or
advice much appreciated.

There are alot of motorhomes out there.? I bought a 1985 Rogue about 3 weeks ago. It is 22 feet. has46k miles on it..Automatic.. is really a clean unit. I paid $4100.00 For it. They were asking $4900. It runs great. It will eventually need for me to replace the rear end with the full floating one.? I am checking into every avenue I can to see if I can get toyota to foot some of it. Don't know if I will have any luck, but I am going to try for sure.? Main stuff to look for as mentioned is abuse, weither the maintance was done on it or not. and look out for leaks. I have had one before that had leaks bad and alot of rotten wood. Was alot of trouble.
??? If I can say anything at all. it is to be patient. That is for me the hardest thing of all to do. A really great one will come along. Listen to your gut and your mechanic on this one. Past experience for me has proven that the deals are out there. I get too impatient and really hate the looking process all together. anyhow. Good luck!..Tommy

Hi, Roseannah.

Welcome to our list. Here's a few things you might consider
before you buy.

Why did the trans need replacing way before It's time?
Many Toyota truck auto transmissions run in excess of
250k before failure. Was the rig was run hot and heavy.
How big is the rig?

If you read the back posts you will find at least two
list members with failures on rigs they just bought with
so called, new or overhauled auto trans. A failure this
soon is a "Red Flag".

You didn't mention the engine type, But from what we have
learned so far, the 88 up had factory added coolers (that's
in addition to the one built in the radiator). Even more of
reason to believe that the transmissions were abused by the
previous owner.? Does this rig have a trailer hitch? Or a
large rack on the back?? More trans "Red Flags".

A tip: as you look, forget the cabin for awhile and instead
concentrate on the truck it's self. After all the truck is
what gets you there and back. The cabins are all about the
same.

Jack A2 would never buy any used machine, be it car,
or truck, that had a pre-mature failure of an engine or trans
no matter who did the repairs.

Our list is new, and we have a lot to learn. By next year
at this time, we should be experts on how to buy used
Toyota MHos. For now; Good luck and keep the list posted,
as this is how we all learn.

Re: Purchasing a 1988 Odyssey (2nd reply.)

Hi all. I'm new to Toyota campers (and motorhomes in general; my
camping experience has been limited to backpacking and car camping)
and found this list last week. I've learned a lot already by
skimming the archives. Thanks to all who have shared their
experience and expertise with these rigs with this list, I
appreciate
the information.

We are considering purchasing a 1988 Toyota Odyssey (w/fiberglass
exterior) with 81,000 miles on it. It looks terrific inside and out,
has a new transmission, new tires, new water pump (to sink, etc.,
not
the engine water pump) and a bunch of extra amenities like
microwave,
tv, tv/radio, nice fridge, carpet runners, recently resealed roof,
etc. The owners are a nice older couple (2nd owners) who are

Any information
or
advice much appreciated.

thanks in advance,

Rosannah.

BTW. It's unlikely your mechanic will be able to detect
a trans problem as this usually shows up when the trans
is worked hard, such as on a trip.

Please read the past trans problems of others in our Archives
before you buy. You may especially want to read Tucker's posts.

Sorry, I know you really didn't want to hear the bad news, as it
sounds like you like this rig. But there are over 100 more Toyotas
for sale on RV trader. Click on "Bookmarks" section of this list
and you will find a link to RV trader. Again good luck.
