Re: Looking for feedback
Hi!
If you are going to be hauling that many people in a Toyota Dolphin, I would probably look into a bigger rig. I've had three people in my home on the highway and have noticed a difference, and that was with all of the holding tanks empty. I don't think (know) that even the 1989 Toy Dolphin with the V6 would be comfortable with a load like that. If you're going to be hauling that many people on a consistent basis, split the cost of gas with your buddies. But if you travel lean, Toyota reliability and economical operation can't be surpassed!! Worked as advertised. No roaming charges and no long distance charges. $59.00 for 300 min is what I paid. Only problem was we got out of range of towers for periods of time in AZ NM other than that no problems. Hope this helps. Jack |

Mine is a 1981 and has a R.B.R. 18 ft Mini-Cruiser rv on it. It has the Toyota L-deisel 4cyl at 62 HP. looks like it's all stock. It has roof air and a ref. shower/stool small bath. Dinnett in back microwave and tv / sink on the pass side, of course sleeping area over the cab. I have looked on ebay and on- line rv trader and everyother place I can to find another but came up with nothing. I wish someone could tell me more about the years manfactured and things like that Jack |

My 86 I bought last May had 72,000 miles on it, now it has 83,000 miles. The unit can last forever, so I would say any mileage is OK, if unit is running properly and doesn't seem to be using oil (check exhaust when you first start it up). Dolphin
Tommy
I had a 1982 Dolphin. They are pretty heavy..alot of wood. It
had the 20r with the 4 speed.. would have loved a 5 speed. I know one of the good things about a Dolphin is they are still in business. Not still making the Toyota's C class but I think the A class motorhomes. Anyway. I think they would still do the rear axle recall if it needed it done. I have never had more than 1 other person in any of the rv's I have had at one time. I am sure it would be gutless with 5 adults. It is with only myself, but gets you where your going. And alot cheaper on gas than anything else you could buy. and nothing beats the dependability of a Toyota. Drive it a ways to make sure it doesn't overheat. Look for signs of leaky roofs, the front timming cover seals leak sometimes, the one I had I had 2 years ago and it had only 21,000 miles. I think the Dolphins are the most popular. anyhow..good luck. Check it out real good. There are alot of good deals,,and alot of really bad ones..Tommy |

Diesel Toyota Motorhome
Hello All:
I purchased a Diesel 1981 Toyota Mini-Cruser 18 ft motorhome. The engine runs great and since I have driven it only twice it seems to run good.My question is : What speed should this MH run from the two time I have driven it the top speed seems to be about 55 60 with a tail wind. is this normal or should i be looking for a problem? It has a 5 spd and a ton rearend (new Toyota recall replaced so i was told). Thanks for any help. Jack |
Re: Looking for feedback
Hi,
I purchased a 1983 Dolphin 2 years ago. The engine had been rebuilt 3,000 miles before, so I have not had to worry much about engine repairs. Watch out for auto tranny problems, and the single timing chain on the 22r is not as durable as on the 22re. Also look for any leakage problems where the exterior aluminum panels meet. With five or six people in your rig, you'd better stay in the truck lane on the intestates! Pat |

It is very possible to find an 80-85 Toyota camper for under 5K. Check
to see if the rear end is a true 1 ton, six lugs (read archives, axles). I would also recommend you get one with a manual transmission, which is much easier to find in the early 80's models. More dependable and cheaper to repair. I would look under our bookmark section an go to the RV Trader link, over 100 Toyota campers listed. Good Luck in you search and if you have any more questions feel free to ask the group. Nate |

I have never seen a chinook with duals. I don't believe they have the axle problems of some of the toyota rigs. They are much lighter.
