It seems I learn best from my mistakes.

(This may not be something anyone else would do but “it seemed like a good idea at the time”)

The firmware upgrade instruction instructions on tinysa.org seemed to offer a few alternatives. I downloaded the tinysa-app and saw that it had a firmware upgrade option. I downloaded the bin firmware and proceeded with the steps. It said it was complete and I rebooted the tinysa. The screen filled with code and stopped.

I am guessing that either the firmware upgrade option does not work or it does not work with a bin file?

I was able to open the unit, short the pins and complete the upgrade with DfuSe and the dfu file.

It all “seemed like a good idea at the time” and I would welcome any comments on what I did/thought wrong.

I use the TinySA-App and it works fine - but use the DFU file!

? ?Even though the tinySA-App firmware uploader allows you to select .bin file types, I believe it only works correctly with .dfu file types.? That probably explains why you had the screen filled with code after uploading was complete.? I've never had an issue using the tinySA-App firmware uploader with .dfu files.

? The tinySA-App firmware uploader open file dialog should probably limit selection of files to .dfu to prevent the type of error you encountered.

There shouldn't be any difference between using .bin .hex or .dfu files, they are supported and uploaded in the exact same way.

Maybe the upload simply went bad for some reason, I get horrible spikes from the central heating when the boiler (in the house) is being lit by the spark gap, most RF things in the house stop receiving when it happens.

I'll have to get it to read back the firmware I think from the unit after uploading it to check it matches OK (verification step).

I confirm that as well.
I've just carried out the update 1.1-31 via the APP.
I used the DFU file and it works fine on my device.

? Thanks for the clarification.? I didn't realize the upload feature was versatile enough to handle all three firmware formats.? Outstanding programming on your end as usual.
