#tinysa selftest #tinysa

First of all my complements to Erik for his TinySA project. I'm really fascinated by it.
(en petje af!)
I have a question and hope that this is the right spot to ask.
After initialising I noticed that in the selftest mentioned that test nr. 11 about the attenuator had failed. (4dBm issue).
I noticed that between manual chosen attenuation steps, it jumps 4 dBm between step 11 and 12 dB.
(firmware _v1.1-52-g1769703). I presume it's not a firmware problem but maybe the attenuator chip?
I bought the SA at the Zeenko store, and I reported them the problem and asked them also what to do best. I hope it's not a clone.
What to do best?
Thanks in advance.?

Hans Merz /Pa3AAW

Hi Hans,

Zeenko store will only sell genuine tinySA as it is the store from Hugen.

Can you do the attenuator test as described here:?
and post a photo of the screen at the end of the test.
You may have to upgrade your FW as older FW do not have MEASURE/MORE/LINEAR

Hi Erik,

Thanks for your reaction. I will do the test off course. but...
I have never done a USB FW upgrade. I have a MAC OS. Do you know a site with a simple explanation to use the TinySA FW upgrade for a Mac??
Sorry for the not-know how…
Thanks in advance.

Get dfu-util from here:?
MacOS seems to be supported
This is the update command
dfu-util? -a 0 -s 0x08000000:leave -D tinySA.bin

It is impossible to brick your tinySA

This is better:
https://nt7s.com/2019/11/updating-the-nanovna-firmware/
?NanoVNA and tinySA use the same update method

Hi Erik,

Thanks for the advice,
I was spending a whole day on trying the new firmware installed. With home-brew and Terminal instructions. FDU and BIN files and the procedures mentioned on the several sites you mentioned. The TinySA on my USB port was regocnized. But no success. Maybe and probably my ignorance? I have BigSur OS installed.
Anyway I was wandering if the STM32 CubeProgrammer is a good way to deal with the firmware install? I saw that Kurt Poulsen mentioned it and also Imsai Guy.
Is there in my case a good reason NOT to try this STM32 software??
By the way I appreciate your You-Tubes a lot, clean and to the point! A Free TinySA ‘university'

No reason at all.
The STM32cube programmer is a good tool. Give it a try.

Hi Erik,?
Here I am again. The Stm32cubeProgrammer worked at last on my Mac. First My new Mac OS Big Sur did very difficult about installing the combi JAVA and STMcubeProgrammer but than I had it suddenly working? I don't know which trick worked bat anyway the results count. Windows is much friendlier with "unknown" software than Apple. So than ?I started upgrading the firmware. ?And after a few times confrontations with white LCD screens on the tinySA. I remembered your advice about shorting VDD and BOOT0. And suddenly after a few tries it worked! ?I was not aware of doing something different. I ?had a few scary moment but there was the fresh firmware!! Interesting new possibilities! I really am fond of the tinySA-project!
So I did the SELFTEST. (see screencopy) And again a problem with the attenuator of 4 dBm. I tried the 30 Mhz calibrated output with several steps of manual attenuation and that head the following results. (see attachment). ?There is obviously something wrong with the attenuator i think at least. I am sure I did not insert signals above 0 dBm. ?What's your opinion? ?
Thanks. I really admire your efforts in this tinySA project. I have never learned about HF so much in a short time by a very tiny but effective HF device.

Hi Hans
The attenuator 4dB stage is indeed bad.

Just like Hans Merz /Pa3AAW described, my tinySA is failing Self Test number 12.? I verified the 4 dBM attenuater is bad.? I turned on the 30 MHz cal.? At 0 thru 3 dBM manual attenuator settings, the measured 30 MHz cal signal was -25.0 dBm.? At 4 thru 7 dBM manual attenuator settings, the measured 30 MHz cal signal was -28.5 dBm. At 8 thru 11 dBM manual attenuator settings, the measured 30 MHz cal signal returned to??-25.0 dBm.? Therefor, the built-in 4dBM attenuator is bad.
I had just updated the F/W to v1.4-79-gaaff72f8.dfu before performing the selftest that fail test #12.? I don't know if it was failing before I updated.

Is this repairable?? What part(s) are bad?? The visible (but tiny) surface mount parts are labeled.
Can I work around this failed 4 dBM attenuator by avoiding manual attenuator settings 4-7, 12-15, 20-23, and 28-31?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, the PE4312 is bad, part U9
See the FAQ for the part number:?

Yes
Thanks in advance.

As do I. ?On the wiki page is a command:?dfu-util -a 0 -s 0x08000000:leave -D tinySA.bin .

Download the firmware and remove the part of the title showing the version number i.e. everything after ".bin" so you end up with tinySA.bin?as above.
??
Connect the tinySA to you computer. ?Now go to the terminal and then to your downloads folder: "cd Downloads" . ?Push the jog button and start the tinySA. ?The screen will be black - don't worry. ?

Now issue the above command. ?The terminal will show that you are erasing the old firmware and then show the installation of the new. ?When done, the screen of the tinySA will alit and you may now smile.

I don't know if the above works on Window systems as I gave up on Windows after I retired. ?I keep reading how much trouble new tinySA users are having upgrading with windows and smile every time I do the above procedure and wonder if Windows people can to the same as I .

Good luck, ? ? ? ? larry

OH Hell!

I forgot to tell you to download thee dfu utility.

Go to where Erik told you to go.

I have been upgrading the firmwares on the NanoVNA, NanoVnaH4, the tinySA, and the tinysa ultra since they first came out and have never had any troubles using Windows 7. I don't have to rename files or any of the convoluted stuff you talked about in the iOS system. The only problem I have had is with a new HP laptop that has Windows 11 and only three USB 3.0 ports which makes the uploading of the firmware very slow. The dfu demo program makes it as easy as turning on your machine.
