?

Just to add further information

?

I placed an order to AliExpress on Friday, and have received notification of shipment today, Monday

?

Current transit time to UK from other Chinese suppliers seems to be 10 to 14 days, which is an improvement on the 4 to 8+ weeks back in April & May

My mistake, just checked PayPal. It wasn't that long.
Must be my chomping at the bit to get my hands on it and compare
it to my new Siglent.

Dick,
? The tinySA will pale in comparison to your Siglent, but for a hobbyist or student that can't afford a $1000 instrument and wants to learn the basis of spectrum analysis measurements it will be a welcome purchase.

? I suspect after learning some of the uses of a spectrum analyzer with the tinySA, some hobbyist will graduate on to to Siglent, Rigol, or other higher performance analyzers.? Other users won't be able to justify the cost to their XYZ and will turn to DIY projects to enhance the use of the tinySA.?

?Erik already is thinking about a FW upgrade that will allow one tinySA to control another over the USB interface for a stepped faux tracking generator set-up.? Just a white board idea for now.

? As a first exposure to frequency domain measurements, the tinySA? would be my choice over a textbook on the same subject.

Considering the price difference between the tinySA and the Siglent is
about 14dB, I don't expect equal performance.

I just want to see how close they are.

Similar comparisons with the nanoVNA and high end VNA's were a real
eye opener.

Hi,

I jumped on the nanoVNA and I got satisfaction right away. I am not so sure the tinySA will do the same for me. I have already started on a homebrew SA to use with one of my O'scopes and based on a TV tuner with homebrew control and 'glue' circuits. The tinySA price is extremely tempting. Maybe after it comes out with a four inch display.

Dick,
? ?Nice dB comparison.? I also continue to be surprised by how functional the NanoVNA-F, NanoVNA-H4 and SAA2 are in comparison to their price.? I have a couple of higher end spectrum analyzers too, but a lot of my work is at HF so the tinySA is becoming more and more the first one I reach for in that range.

? I've always wanted a portable frequency response measurement device that worked above 100MHz that I could carry in my pocket when I attended swapfests.? The tinySA fits that bill with its built in calibrator output and LOW input.? I can't wait for hamfests to start back up in my county after this COVID-19 crisis subsides so I can head for the bargain tables and cherry pick items ;)

? The LOW input is where the tinySA shines because of its adjustable attenuator and filtering.? The HIGH input is wide open and without an external attenuator is prone to producing spurious signals.?

? The LOW output produces sinusoidal waveforms up to 350MHz. The output can be swept over a selected span within that range.? The output can also be AM or FM modulated and level swept from -6 to -76dBm.? I would have been intrigued by the device if only for its LOW output features.

Bill,
? I collected a box of cable and TV tuners that I had been intending to use in a similar project by Science Dynamics, or? some company with a similar name.? It would have been fun, but no way my DIY project could have come close to what Erik has packed into the tinySA.? What I really like, and what I hate the most about the NanoVNA-V2, is that you can control it using console commands like the NanoVNA which makes it a joy to experiment with.

? I wear glasses, but I don't feel the same eye strain using the tinySA as I do with the 2.8" NanoVNA.? I think its because the tinySA display is not as busy as the 4-traces on the NanoVNA.? The other reason is that DiSlord was part of the beta test team and contributed the same beautiful 3D UI and smoother fonts that are in his current releases for the NanoVNA families.

? ?At the current rate that the tinySA is selling on Alibaba, I'm sure that's incentive for Hugen to consider a 4" factor form device.? My crystal ball also tells me hugen and Erik will not just repackage the tinySA but, also update to a higher performance STM processor.? Erik will most likely add filtering and an adjustable attenuator to the HIGH port.? With another cycle of beta testing, the 4" version could be some months down the road.

? Of course my crystal ball could be dusty, and an interim product could appear with just a 4" display upgrade.

I have a Siglent I bought recently, plus I am hoping to find a good used HP or something to get me up closer to 20 gigs.? As a beta tester, I have two tinySAs here now.?

But as soon as they were available for purchase, I bought one.? It's not a high-end device.? But for quick-and-dirty work, in that size package, and at that price, it's a real bargain.? I was amazed at all the features Erik managed to put in the firmware.? I'd find some feature in the tinySA and I'd think, "Does my Siglent do that?"? And most often the answer was no.? The tinySA is an amazingly feature-rich device.

I also add better timing measure (CW freq sync), triggers, remove many slow floating points operations, speedup sweep speed, update graphic plot code, and UI

PS today i receive 2 tinySA v0.3 from Hugen :)

DiSlord,
? I'm sure Erik and hugen would agree that your contributions to the tinySA FW were priceless, and I'm glad the 2 tinySA v0.3 devices did not take as long to reach you as your beta device did :)

So...

I ordered a tinySA today and the purchase page said delivery is estimated to be October 2020. Maybe that is so I won't be disappointed if it had said tomorrow by lunch time <evil grin>. I suppose I can continue my HB SA project. I was planning to anyway.

We can never have too many radios. We can never have too many tools.

It's okay. I don't order much "fast food" either.

I should download the available documents.

So now you have two tinySA you can help me with the serial interface so one tinySA can control a second tinySA and do all kind of interesting measurements such as scalar S21 of frequency translating devices :-)

Is it possible to get the UART input into the shell handler so the same commands used for USB control can be send through the serial interface?
The code for the UART is already in and it should work but I did not yet connect the UART input to the shell command processing.
