Re: Interesting use for a dummy load
Hi Dave,
coupling of the RF will be variable according to frequency, length and position of the tinySA antenna, so even when doing a relative measurement, you may have a big difference in levels. See a post here where I described how I made a 20W dummy load into a 40 dB attenuator, it's not a perfect 50 Ohm match at both ports, but surely good enough for "amateur" work, and I get consistent levels. Of course, 40 dB may not be enough to measure a TX output, more attenuators may be needed. Another solution is to build the power sampler (link is in my post). Luc ON7DQ |
Interesting use for a dummy load
Not having a suitable attenuator to hand, I found that a dummy load radiated enough RF for the tinySA to analyse if held close enough.
I'm not interested in the exact amplitude of the harmonics, just relative; I see that I have a harmonic on my TX, but it's way down. -- Dave VK2KFU |
Re: Uhf TV monitoring, Antenna testing
Normally TV signals should be below -45dBm on the cable so connecting to the high input is not a risk.
For many other signals an attenuator is recommended. Simple guideline is to keep the high input level below -30dBm to avoid spurious signals generated inside the tinySA -- ------------------------------------------

(I only have BNC-SMA adapters right now).Nothing special, as long as it connects to SMA it should work. I also asked about the presence of the FM broadcast signals on your youtube video, but you didn't answer that question.? Is this common practice in your area??Yes, FM broadcast is on the cable in Europe.?I checked the signal on the cable before the RADIO/TV splitter. Not sure this will continue as the providers want to remove all analog content. ? -- ------------------------------------------

Re: Uhf TV monitoring, Antenna testing
I made a comment on your above linked youtube video, but as a relative newbie to RF, I have some questions...

Look here:?
Its using cable for demonstration but the type and strength of signals should be comparable when using a good antenna Towards the end it is shown how you can use a TV signal to calibrate the high input -- ------------------------------------------

Uhf TV monitoring, Antenna testing
New here. Can't find where to add my callsign. I'm in the process of replacing my tv antennas.I receive signals from different direction and want to use the TinySA when it arrives to point my antennas and determine if amplification is needed. Open to ideas. Thanks.

Yes, it can work but only if you have the DFU mode drivers installed.Ah OK, I thought that the TinySA app installed the drivers too, my mistake. The DFU drivers must be installed separately (and correctly) for this to work. Regards, Martin |

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýYes, it can work but only if you have the DFU mode drivers installed. Most problems trying to upgrade the firmware (using DFU or whatever) are caused by lacking this driver, that is not the normal one for running the SA controlled by a PC. Regards, Ignacio EB4APL

BTW, It works beautifully with a Windows 10 SA program.Which SA program ? If it is the Tiny SA app, it has a built in upload feature you can use, which makes it all very easy. Use the button bar on the top row with the two black triangles Regards, Martin |
