? I tried to duplicate Ed's disconnect issue and could only due so after switching focus to another application.? When I switched back to tinySA-App (after a few minutes in the other application) communications had stopped, and the USB log had the following entries:

rx link timeout .. disconnecting
connect: serial port connecting ..
connect: serial port connected
43.494? serial error connect SetCommState [31] A device attached to the system is not functioning.
43.528 tx: help
58.476 rx link timeout .. disconnecting

More intel...my original TinySA froze-up after about an hour of normal operation.

Well, it looks like I spoke too soon! The TinySA Ultra froze-up after about 5 minutes of operation and disconnected shortly thereafter. The only way to recover was to turn the TinySA Ultra off and on again and to close and restart the TinySA App.

Still looking for suggestions...perhaps a bug???

Thanks for the suggestion...I should have thought of that myself. I did disable all power management on both computers and changed the baud rate back to 115200. I am currently testing the TinySA Ultra again and will let you know if? your suggestion has fixed the problem. I am not sure why my old TinySA did not disconnect, but if this change fixes the problem, then I will not worry about it.

It would nice to be able to enter 12GHz as a stop frequency? (for exploring the high band) in the TinySA App

v1.1.20.1 max seems 9900 MHz.

I have used it for work at 11Ghz to verify the STL signal at one of out stations. Yes it is lacking sensitivity, but since our transmit signal levels are at -5dbm+-1db at full power at the test port it works fine. Observed usable range is about 45db. I would love it to be more sensitive so I could see receive signals at the dish (~-70-50dbm) but no problem for now I ordered a 50db commercial amplifier (RLNA06G18G45D-H)
That should amplify the level enough to be usable. Btw, you do not want to know the price lol. But since I wanted to buy it for other lab tests anyways this was just an added excuse?to finally do it.

Ed, did you disable the 'power management option' of your USB port?
If there is no traffic on the USB port, Windows will shut it down after certain periode of time.

TinySA Ultra and TinySA App

 

Colleagues,

I have owned a TinySA for quite a while now and just received a new TinySA Ultra yesterday (the screen was aligned properly). The Ultra seems to be working well stand alone, but I am having some issues when using it with TinySA-App v1.1.20.1.

Since I usually use the TinySA-App when making measurements, I would appreciate any suggestions for resolving an issue which I am experiencing. When I use the TinySA Ultra I seem to get a "Disconnect" after several minutes of apparently normal operation. I was originally running at the default baud rate of 115200 and reduced the baud rate to 19200 but the problem persists. As a test, I exchanged the TinySA Ultra for my original TinySA and have not experienced a disconnect for at least an hour of operation so far. I should mention that I am running Windows 10 and have ensured that the COM port is running at the same baud rate as the TinySA-App. I have also experienced this issue on two different computers, one running 32-bit Windows 10 and the other running 64-bit Windows 10.

Suggestions would be appreciated!

For me, the biggest benefit of Ultra is that I don't have to worry about spur removal. The sensitivity of the TinySA at 10 GHz is not bad compared to a pro harmonic mixer, and when setting up radio gear, I usually work with relatively strong signals.
I have made measurements of the TinySA sensitivity for frequencies 8 to 18 GHz, always the oscillator gain is 0 dBm It is for 3rd, 4th and 5th harmonics. I've attached screenshots.
The sensitivity is sufficient for working with amplifiers. Level calibration is important.
Thanks for any efforts to extend the bandwidth!

Current max freq for the Ultra is 12GHz. Not sure you will see anything above that as the Ultra will need to use the 5th harmonic and the mixer is used way, way out of spec. And I have nothing to test these high frequencies.

I have home made ham radio transverters up to 47 GHz. I use an Advantest spectrum analyzer together with a harmonic mixer up to 100 GHz to set them up.
When working with the harmonic mixer, I have to change the frequency of the local oscillator appropriately to detect spurs.
The TinySA ULTRA has automatic spur suppression (for steady signals) already implemented and this is a big help! I will welcome any extension of the TinySA Ultra range, it will make my job very easy.
I have already tested the 10368 MHz signal on the Ultra, the sensitivity is quite sufficient for my use. Amazing instrument!

? ?Funny you should ask Erik.? I was gifted an X-Band (10.5GHz) Gunn Oscillator transceiver in unknown condition.? After hooking it up to a 9V battery I was able to verify with my tinySA Ultra that at least the transmit portion is working.

In the ultra there are multiple correction tables, if there is a 30 MHz point in the table it can not be removed and correction at 30MHz must be zero.

Congratulations. The ultra is a great work.
I wobbled it until 3.2GHz to see, where are the best positions for setting the leveloffset correction points. The courve is mostly linear and only less points are mandatory for a correction as exact as possible. Only 3 frequencies stood out: 244MHz, 488MHz and 651MHz. At these frequencies are measurement problems. If I activate the spur correction manually they go away but the automatic spor correction doesn't activate it.

Now I would like to optimize the correction table. In the normal tinysa there has to be a point for 30MHz. Is there any frequency for the ultra which has to be present in the table, too?

So I have this challenge for all tinySA Ultra users:?Can you demonstrate a real application (not just a signal generator) where you use the tinySA Ultra above 5 GHz?
As a first step I welcome a measurement of the 5GHz WiFi band in max hold with some channels active

Roger, thanks for the video link! ?This is my 1st experience with a spectrum analyzer and you hit the nail on the head in educating me. ?I’m not certain I follow the integration of the 3 screens. ?I’m hoping my habit of using my variable HP 355 attenuator and starting at 40 then reducing to no more than 10 will keep me safe while I learn.
