Re: Firmware Update Question

No problem, Dick.?

But yes, if you think it should be rewritten, what areas need to change and what content needs to be added?

As one of the early members of the Nanovna forum, I started adding content to that forum's Wiki from a user perspective.?

Erik has created content in the tinysa Wiki I think from his developer's perspective and when you're close to the action, sometimes certain knowledge is taken for granted - but as I said, if you you explain how you think the Wiki could be improved, let Erik know in the forum or privately.?

Dick,

Putting things into perspective, the tinysa is a new product, as is it's Wiki which is maintained by Erik. Erik is very good at adding knowledge to the Wiki for the benefit of the end users.

Since a few tinysa users have had issues trying to understand how DfuSe works, maybe Erik can add some helpful tips to the forum's Wiki. (Ie: grab some images from my Nanovna document, below).

This is one of the reasons user forums are created - to share information and provide constructive feedback. So, instead of just saying 'trash the wiki', explain the issues you're having and what info you'd like to see added.?

The NanoVNA is so prevalent that we sometimes forget that not every new user is familiar with its firmware update procedure and can apply that to the tinySA.? In Dick's case, I believe he owns a NanoVNA-F which has a different update procedure than the original NanoVNA.

Dear Herb,

I heartily support your last comment re the capability of small labs of a decade ago.

I believe the whole concept of open source and the creation of the nanovna and Tinysa will go down in history as transforming the interest by enthusiasts, (as opposed to professionals) of electronics and radio communication.

Re: Adding an LNA to the tinySA

That sounds very promising. There are a few wide band amps on Ebay which are in aluminium cases. I would probably get an open one, shorten the board and fabricate a box. I would be worried by the strain on the sma connector.

Maybe a future Tinysa could have a built-in switchable amp, which would then give a 60db controlled input range, with the built-in attenuator (woops, I am suggesting future possibke developments and I promised I would not do that any more).

Lee,
? The two instruments compliment each other's capabilities so having both is a bonus.? At some point you will want to check the impedance of a device, verify the through loss of a cable or attenuator and measure the return loss of a an antenna.? These are all things the NanoVNA can accomplish easily.

? With those two instruments, and an oscilloscope and multimeter, you will rival the measurement capability of small labs from a decade ago.

Erik,
? Both of those actions make sense to me.? My expected behavior was that after peak search the marker would be in normal mode.? If the user wanted to jump peak to peak afterwards they could search max-left/right, otherwise the lever would just move the marker to any position.

Yes, there is a DC blocking capacitor at the input so you can put the Vdd to the SMA center pin using an appropriate inductor. Best to add a switch too

This is a SPF5189Z amp. Many are available on eBay but make sure you buy from a reputed seller and check the current drawn as there are many fake SPF5189Z components on eBay.
Officially it should run from 5V/100mA but for low input levels 3.3V/70mA works as well.
They work well below 50MHz

Re: Adding an LNA to the tinySA

I am impressed.

However to make it a bit easier, is it possible to put the vcc direct to the ?tinysa ?input sma (assuming there is a blocking capacitor) so that it is similar to a bias tee ( is that what they are called?). Then the lna (also with a blocking capacitor) only has to be connected to the sma, without the need for the power lead.
