Re: Used the tinySA app to update but now won't connect

OK.? I went for it a assign it to COM2.? Rebooted.? It's working.? Not sure if that'll screw anything else up.?

Re: Used the tinySA app to update but now won't connect

Yep.? I had done that up to step 5.? Every port I tried said "The port has been opened by another application..."? I guess I'll try one and see what happens.? Does the tinySA care what com port is assigned?

Re: Grey Screen After Firmware Update

That's a good point. IIRC this is a symptom of incorrect firmware.

Firmware for the Ultra resides here:

For the TinySA classic it is here:

Roger,

Yes, I am using that guide.?

What would you suggest, if anything?

To change the COM port number of a serial device in Device Manager, complete the following:

  1. Open the Device Manager by pressing the Windows Key + R. Type ¡°devmgmt.msc¡± and press Enter.
  2. Expand the Ports (COM & LPT) section.
  3. Right-click the COM port and select Properties.
  4. Click the Port Settings tab and click Advanced.
  5. Change the COM port number to an available COM port number.

Note: Multiple serial ports cannot share the same COM port number.

  1. Restart your computer.

Note: Even if you change the COM port number back to the original number, you still need to restart your computer.

Re: Grey Screen After Firmware Update

Jason,

Are you following this guide (from the wiki) step-by-step

Re: Grey Screen After Firmware Update

I can't power down before disconnecting or i would lose the DFU connection.?

Re: Grey Screen After Firmware Update

Just in case power down before disconnecting jumper?

Re: Grey Screen After Firmware Update

Connected VDD and Boot0
Powered on device and disconnected jumper
plugged in usb , refreshed com port, hit connect
I have tried installing the firmware by loading it under the open file tab, under Memory & File Editing as well as selecting bin file from erasing and programing
Select Download or Start Programing
once complete hit ok
Hit disconnect
power cycle
White Screen?

Re: Used the tinySA app to update but now won't connect

Yeah.? Weird right??? I try changing the port and no matter which I pick up to COM100 I get "The port has been opened by another application..." so I haven't accepted the change. What would you suggest, if anything?

Re: Grey Screen After Firmware Update

Please describe the exact steps you took to re-install the FW so people can spot possible errors.

Peter,

Good points.?

The type of protection device(s) will determine what level of Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can be tolerated.

The tinySA needs to use low capacitance protection devices on the front end because it has a very high frequency input requirement.? Low capacitance parts limit the degree of ESD protection and so users need to be careful.? Walking across a nylon carpet in the winter with an antenna connected to the tinySA is asking for trouble.

Unfortunately it looks like your RF switch and LNA are damaged, if it is ESD damage it usually only damages the RF switch. Maybe you accidentally fed an RF signal that exceeded the power limit, you can refer to the wiki to replace the RF switch and LNA!
Thanks. I checked out the attenuator and it shows flat green line, so good I assume. Just need to source the RF switch now. Cheers

Re: Grey Screen After Firmware Update

I've tried to connect the VDD and BOOOT0 and reinstall the firmware and it continues to be a white screen.?

I'm trying not to get drawn into this but¡. Just because a unit has an ESD protected input, does not mean it suddenly becomes totally immune to ESD or input Voltage overload damage. To anyone who knows it is pretty obvious that a simple exposed metal antenna connected straight to the SA input is going to be highly vulnerable. Just touch it accidentally and momentarily to something that is floating at maybe half grid voltage (many non earthed SMPS products for instance?) or to earth whilst TinySA is being charged by such a grid floating USB power supply. As with full size analysers and scopes costing many thousands, due diligence still needs to be applied. Peter
