Question: how to set appropriately TinySA Ultra as real time waterfall for ICOM7100, like SDR receiver ?

Hello dears.

1st of all, I would like to give developer my hot thanks for this great device which has really great testing abilities in compare to it's small size ! Really it is a complement for victor network analyzer SV4401A making very strong testing & lab tool !

However, we have difficulty to set it as fast real time with good visualization for useful signals waterfall for ICOM 7100 transceiver.

We modify ICOM 7100 by adding an output port for it's IF from official points for that in it's board. It work 100% with SDR receiver. However, I preferred to use TinySA Ultra for this purpose because I have no SDR receiver. SDR receiver is owned by my friend .....

We have difficulty to set TinySA Ultra as waterfall for ICOM 7100. The chief difficulties are:

1. it is slow. When we increase RBW it will become fast but the visualization of useful signal (it's carve will be smaller)
2. we need to set a marker (single marker) to point constantly to frequency that radio at at. We failed for that.

We tried center/span mode, then set span at 400 KHz. We make "Marker1" only active marker & set it's type as "Normal" then set "central" for this marker. But we did not get a marker point to frequency that the radio dealer set on to ...

I'm already opened a thread on www.qrz.com forum - see following link:
https://forums.qrz.com/index.php?threads/how-to-set-tinysa-to-make-real-time-spectroscpe-for-icom-7100.869913/
but we did not, yet, reach to solution .....

My call sign is: YI1YJK

Any help is appreciated.

Regards.

Martin,
? I mis-spoke, only branches for NanoVNA-App are currently available on GitHub.? If you are interested in taking a look at, or forking the TinySA-App code, then you will need to PM Erik and request a copy.?

? Probably at some point in the future Erik will get around to posting TinySA-App to GitHub since One-of-Eleven has released the base NanoVNA-App to open source.? It would allow other programmers to submit commits to Erik's base branch and improve TinySA-App.

Sorry for sending you into the woods :-)

That's correct. I actually meant transfer instead of conversion.? Probably best to leave the troubleshooting to Erik.? I wish I could understand the TinySA-App code on GitHub and help to improve the application, but C++ is Greek to me.

Erik did a great job of modifying NanoVNA-App into TinySA-App but it still shows vestiges of NanoVNA-App that could be cleaned up and does not fully take advantage of tinySA or tinySA-Ultra's capabilities.? I was hoping an interested third party would take on the task but that hasn't happened yet.??

I don't believe that is the case, Mark.? The attached Python script logs the onscreen trace values to separate CSV files every 15 sec for 1 minute and the saved trace values are the same as the on-screen values.

All the script does is read the ASCII trace data and trace frequency values into separate arrays and then writes them out to a CSV file.? I believe Erik uses raw data instead of ASCII data when retrieving the trace data and there is a minor conversion error that is creeping in before saving to CSV.??

Hardware is a lot more fun than software and Erik has other hardware projects on the back burner, so the CSV issue is mostly taking him time to get around to.? If you are familiar with Python, then maybe the attached Python script can help in the meanwhile.? I downloaded it a while back off the web and forgot to note who the proper credit should go to.

Hi,

Did Windows do one of their automatic updates? Can you try it with a different computer? Do the various cables you have tried work with other USB data devices? I have found that USB connectors are reasonably robust but with enough plug/unplug cycles they do wear out. Maybe the socket on your tinySA has failed.

Ed,

Have you perhaps changed the USB cable? … not all USB cables are bi-directional. In fact, the cable that came with your TinySA Ultra is not bidirectional; It is only for charging the device.

Mac image viewers that can handle TinySA BMP's

Please, this is NOT a topic to discuss TinySA feature request or debate Windows VS Mac. It is to help identify Mac image viewers that can open TinySA BMP's.

I just tried Phiewer (lite) and it opens the TinySA BMP's. It can open a whole directory of files and allows one to flip through them. A bit like Preview. The Lite version is free but can not save / convert images. The Pro version is 14.95 USD and allows saving in other formats.

Please add other programs which you might find that will help others view the TinySA BMP files.

Re: Tiny SA Ultra Test 11, Display Fail

Enable the big waterfall and see if the waterfall looks good.
If bad, contact R&L
If ok there could be a minor pixel defect than can be ignored

Tiny SA Ultra Test 11, Display Fail

Hi,
Just purchased a TinySA Ultra from R&L. Ran self test and get a fail on Test 11 for the display (Display Fail).? Ran touch calibration with out any issues and can draw lines cleanly.? Aside from that the SA Ultra seems to work correctly.

How do I get Test 11 to pass?

There are NO graphics viewers in Windows or Linux that *cannot *open bmp files.

The file format is taken for granted by every bit of software on the planet.

Conversion tools are never required.

I'm not criticizing anyone's request at all, I am merely saying that I'm bemused
by the crass position taken by Apple as an innocent bystander ;-)

? ?Ah, but that's the whole point of providing a second format, if possible; to avoid the necessity of dealing with a second conversion application.? I don't understand why a request to add tiff would be unreasonable if the code can be moved from the NanoVNA to the tinySA Ultra without breaking anything.

? Again, I'm a Windows user but I can empathize with a Mac user who would prefer to be able to open screenshots directly on their computer.? If Erik says adding tiff is not in his future plans, then investigating a suitable conversion program is of course the only option for those users.

I might ask, but would be happy to use a conversion program, several of which are available for the Mac and not lose any sleep over the matter.
