Re: tinySA deeper case back, larger battery, 3.5mm jack for Listen mode

Being new to this group I had not discovered Karl Jan Skontorp's? "audio extension" in the Files section which appears to be a very good design.??I'm happy to share my own design.? It includes the two holes to make the red (charge) and blue (scan) LEDs visible.? You will find them in the Files section as "Another audio extension".

New FW release
Version V1.4063, Ultra only

Changes:
- Option to sound a beep when the trigger level is exceeded.
- New measurement: MULTI BAND
- Waterfall height reduced.

The multi band measurement allows the definition of up to 8 bands to be scanned, each with a possible trigger level
The active bands will be scanned in the order as listed.
As the scanning is intended to be as fast as possible the RBW and display points are automatically optimized for speed depending on the span of the band.

There is not enough free memory in the 2.8" tinySA to add these functions.

The wiki is not yet updated with this new functionality

Re: 2 files uploaded #file-notice

Sorry, the links are in error due to having to correct the file names and then replacing the files with the files that were renamed.? The files you should look for are:
  • TinySA Ultra Menu-Tree Chart - v1.4-49 - Updated February 23, 2023_V3.pdf
  • TinySA Ultra Menu-Tree Chart - v1.4-49 - Updated February 23, 2023_V3.vsd
Just go to the Files section and sort by date so the latest files show at the top of the list and you should see them.

Re: Looking for a suggestion for small attenuator #tinysa #ultra

If you run any of our HTs through the "safety" applications from FCC or RSGB, they fail when the HT is hand-held next to the head.? Does anyone care??

Even the public responders and enforcers are exposed to identical levels of RF exposure.? Does anyone care???

Virtually all our cell phones and smartphones have a warning in the User's Manual (which no one reads) to hold the unit(s) several to 10 cm from the ear.? Does anyone heed this warning?? How could they as they don't read the User's Manual.? Does anyone care???

Hi Rob,

If you are standing that close to such a powerful source of RF or interference, you may also have to consider health issues :-)

It's always sensible to play on the safe side and start with an attenuator connected. A small 20dB attenuator, rated at 1 or 1/2 watt with SMA connectors would be a good starting point. At higher power levels attenuators begin to become quite large, but I find that a 20dB attenuator rated at 100 watts to be probably the most useful in the workshop. This brings 100watts down to a more manageable 1 watt, that allows the use of additional smaller 1 watt attenuators as required.

The TinySA already has a reasonable dynamic range, so as long as you don't exceed the recommended input level, and are using it in conjunction with a relatively small antenna, then you should have enough in hand to be able to differentiate between the strongest and weakest signals you are ever likely to encounter, unless of course you are standing right next to a transmit antenna.

Regards,

Martin

Re: Looking for a suggestion for small attenuator #tinysa #ultra

Rob,
To handle the 5W HT, you should use a fixed attenuator capable of handling the power. If you also have a step attenuator, they are never rated for more than 1/2W, sometimes less. So to get the %w down to 100mW or so, a 20 dB fixed attenuator will do. If you want to use only the fixed attenuator with the HT, you need to get the power down below 10mW to keep the Tinysa protected, so a 30 dB attenuator will do. I have seen step attenuators on eBay.

Looking for a suggestion for small attenuator #tinysa #ultra

Hello,

I am a new Ham. Just purchased Ultra. One of the use cases I will use is for RFI finding.
Any one could suggest a small portable attenuator? How many levels would you suggest?
If I am standing near a power line with a magnetic loop or 2m or 70cm Yagi, how much "power" can I expect from the antenna?
Can I connect it to Ultra directly and not worry about damaging it under all cases of RFI / Power lines?

While we are at it, I like to use it with any 5W HT. So it should handle that power. But I think that might be overkill since the switchable 5W attenuator might not be small.
Perhaps someone has a schematic that I could build?

Suggestions are welcome.

73, everyone :)
