When I turn on my computer it acts funny. It keeps telling me that I
have 3 programs running. How do I find programs running in the
background? I am using Windows xp. Can some of you computer guys help
me please? nancybxyz@...

To view all processes running got to Task Manager. Contol, Alt, Delete. Choose the processes tab. You can kill anthing that is not necessary for the computer to have running all of the time (itunes, adobe photoshop, updates for java, quicktime, etc). Since I don't know what it running, I don't know how to advise you further. I usually have about 40 processes running (too many for me really, but it is stuff I really need, so I try not to get too uptight- just makes the computer boot slower).

Also, you could have some viruses. Sounds like you need to do a system scan, registry clean, and dump the temp, cookies, other trash, etc.

Pressing control-alt-delete all at the same time will bring up the
Task Manager. The Applications tab will list the things that you
probably already know about. The Processes tab lists everything that
is running, which might or might not go with an application that you
can see. Some of these are very important background processes and
should not be killed. You can Google for their names if you find
something suspicious. Your mystery programs could be something as
innocuous as a connection to a networked printer, or they could be malicious.

If your computer suddenly gets slow, you can use Task Manager to find
out which program is causing the problem. click on the Processes
tab, and then click on the CPU usage heading to sort by that. The
number there is a percentage, so it will tell you what is hogging the
CPU. It's okay if System Idle Process is in the 90s. :)

Download a free program called regCleaner. It will tell what is running, What has snuck in and you can remove from there. Just be careful you do not remove something you really need.
