Recent - Wal-Mart Newz
The WalMart in Paramount California had a petition on the cutting table with corporate number real large and 1500 signatures. They had about 9 bolts left and they are going to bring back the fabric after inventory. I was told to go back after the 2nd week of February. I guess they are listening to us.

It is my understanding that the fabric won't totally be removed, but will be pre packaged like in 3 yard increments. It appears they are trying to cut out the ladies that do the fabric cutting. Some of the bigger stores here in Phoenix will go fast, but the little store we go to on 59 and Bill is going to be rebuilding so they will be one of the last hold outs until the store is redone. It is very sad to see them to away with fabric Not understanding!!!!

I spoke with a fabric dept.manager in my home town last week she told me that in 90 days all fabrics and craft would be gone and whatever was left would me put in the trash. She said they were enlarging the electronic dept. to take the place of the other items because they make more money per square foot on electronics than the items in fabrics and crafts..There wasn't much fabric left then. It would be nice if they did reconsider, but do they really care about families that enjoy those items. I e-mailed Wal-Mart a rather lenghty one but never heard a word back from them. LOVE it!!
But, now is NOT the time to stop our little (HAH) grass-roots campaign! Maybe we could/should email them again to PRAISE their "hold on the removal of fabrics". After all, when a child or a pet does something RIGHT, they are entitled to praise, right? Oh yes, LOVE it! My manager told me it would go completely. and to get on the band wagon and call the company and write and tell them you would shop any where but there. Joann's, on line, and Hancock's. He was a great help, and he said his mother and grandmother sew and quilt so he felt our pain and was trying to help us. sherry in ks

Here's the official news from Wall Street Journal:
WAL-MART AIMS TO FURTHER TAILOR STORES TO LOCALES By Kris Hudson January 23, 2007; Page A2 Wal-Mart Stores Inc., in an ongoing effort to tailor its merchandise to the taste of each store's clientele, this year will stop selling cut fabric in some of its stores in favor of offering crafts and party-planning supplies. Most of the new stores Wal-Mart opens this year and those it remodels will forgo fabrics to instead feature craft-and-celebration centers offering merchandise for "crafts and party-planning needs along with information on current trends and new ideas in the area of life's celebrations," such as weddings and birthdays, Wal-Mart spokeswoman Tara Raddohl said. Wal-Mart intends to open as many as 280 U.S. supercenters and discount stores this year and remodel several hundred more. The switch also will affect a "small number" of Wal-Mart's existing stores, but Ms. Raddohl declined to quantify the amount. Wal-Mart's fabric departments, which offer bolts of cloth that are cut to order by store employees, harken back to the Bentonville, Ark., retailer's roots serving primarily rural shoppers with tight budgets. But Wal-Mart now operates roughly 4,000 U.S. stores, with most of its new stores opening in urban and suburban locales. In a bid to squeeze more sales out of those stores, Wal-Mart is culling slow-selling departments from some in favor of merchandise that might better entice more affluent shoppers or better resonate with local tastes. Last year, Wal-Mart discontinued firearm sales at roughly 1,000 stores due to insufficient demand. This year, it intends to pare the number of stores at which it offers live fish in its pet departments, though the retailer declines to divulge a number of stores slated for the change. Bill Dreher, a Deutsche Bank Securities analyst, said Wal-Mart likely is moving away from fabrics because the department doesn't lure significant traffic into its stores and doesn't yield the same margins as other merchandise. Also, cut fabric and pet fish require employees to retrieve the merchandise for customers. "The fabric department takes up a lot of space in the stores," Mr. Dreher said. "Making your own clothes is a dying skill. And when Wal-Mart rolled these stores out 40 years ago, it made a lot of sense. But now people might [instead] decorate around the house." Wal-Mart declined to divulge its annual sales in fabrics. The department is part of its soft-goods and apparel business, which accounted for 15% of its $312.4 billion in sales in 2005, the most recent year it has reported. The department faces challenges, including liquidating trendy apparel from an overly aggressive fashion program and weathering remodelings of apparel and home-decor sections in several hundred stores |
They must have made that decision after planning the new Super Walmart in The Villages FL. The store has notions but NO Fabric. That doesn't make sense to me. There is a department called Celebration which consist of party supplies. Boy I buy a lot of those supplies. I can't tell you how many different clubs we have that use fabric of some kind.
I'll bet they didn't do away with their baseball and golf merchandise two other big sports in The Villages. Well I for one will not buy any party supplies from Walmart. I also spoke to aa associate in the fabric department at our local Wal-
Mart Super Center. She said that the fabric would NOT be closed. This decision was made because of popular demand (e-mails?). However some changes would be made in the types of fabrics that will be sold. High end fabrics such as wools and suitings would be discontinued. Average crafting and quilting fabrics and the dollar per yard would still be carried. Good going sewers!!! Have a great day stitching!!! Judy |

My Letter - To "Paul Harvey"
Unlike a lot of gripes - this email is not just another one of those. Wal-Mart has recently decided to discontinue the "Fabric" Section of some of there current stores as well as not even include it in their new stores being built just to "Keep up with the Targets"! This is Unfortunate - Because for a lot of Mid- westerners - if it were not for the Fabrics, threads and notions carried at the local Wal-Mart Store, these people would have to travel from 50 to 100 miles to the nearest fabric store. - Maybe it's unknown just how many Women and Men, Girls and Boy's sew, and do Machine Embroidery in essence Wal-Mart is cutting off their own nose to spite their face in doing this unjust action to the "American Public" Home made and Hand made quilts, blankets and clothing for some, are still a way of life - To show pride in what you have produced with your own two hands and creating a treasure for generations to enjoy and pass down stories about with Wal-Mart's help, is slowly coming end. Mr. Harvey - while you may never read this or even address this issue on your program I would like to identify just a small impact on the smaller communities around the US this decision has made - yet you do indorse Wal-Mart quite often - the managers of these stores may not realize the tremendous impact this desission has made on a way of the "American Life" – For you see, it's not all about Computers and the Internet – there are still down to earth ideas and ideals that run the "Heart of Americia". They do not realize how many men and women such as myself that go into Wal-Mart, which sometimes is out of their way to visit the fabrics, browse through the patterns, and chat with one of the associates about sewing an machine embroidery. I know that If and when this department disappears from Wal-Mart, so will I! Thank you for Listening. Mary Lou Harvest, AL Walmart in The Villages FL. The store has notions but NO Fabric. Hi Mary Lou,
Very well written! I live in the Florida and am on a very limited budget. I have been shopping Walmart because I am able to save on some items which makes it worth the extra miles to go there to shop for material and other sewing needs. If they close the material/fabric section in the store, then I see no need to shop there. Not worth the distance and time. Thank you, Lee --- In HookedOnEmbroidery@..., "Mary Lou" <maykeg@...> wrote:

I do not want to be ugly, but last time this happened I go to the point I just deleted the digest, I didn't event bother with trying to see what else was in something I truly love to read, but I just can't handle days and days of more Wal-Mart stuff.
There's no doubt, they will do what they want to do and what they see as the best for their bottom line. If you want to call, write, whatever, do, but please do we have to go through this again? I agree I do hope Wal Mart stays selling fabric. There are many people who can only afford the type and grade of fabric that Wal Mart carries.
I did get a bit of a nasty letter from someone telling me I should not support Wal Mart and called them a few names. If this is the type of mail this list generates then I will continue my support Wal Mart no matter what they sell. If we have people that do not want to buy there it is their choice and I am entitled to mine Sewing hugs Doreen........... jandor@...
