Manners

Kathleen in Calif

You will probably not like opinion, but since you asked, I will answer. Yes, it is bad manners. However, as a person of good manners, you should also know that it is impolite to correct bad manners in others, unless it it one's own offspring. And even then, it should be done privately. Since you stated that this person is not your offspring, it was neither your responsibility, nor your right, to correct them.

Family gatherings should be fun and loving. Since it is well known that this person says it at "every" family gathering, perhaps it is their way of complimenting the cook on providing a delicious meal? For any family gathering, one should always prepare more than enough food to completely satisfy everyone's hunger. If you know that particular dishes are this family member's (or any other family member's) favorite, you should prepare enough to be able to answer, "As much as you can eat," when asked "How much can I take?" And let the rest of your conversation be about catching up on family news and accomplishments.

Manners are not there. How about next time have the youngest eat first or the oldest make it a game. You could also have them draw numbers

I think he is being rude for a couple of reasons. If he is a family member, why does he think he has the right to be served first every time and ask how much he can take? Maybe next time he is over you can have some appetizers prior to dinner, so he won't be as hungry and feel like he needs to ask how much he can eat. If he should ask again, I would tell him to take a reasonable amount then feel free to come back for seconds after everyone has filled their plates.

In my home, if he were an unrelated guest or an elder family member I would serve him first. Otherwise, I fix my children's plates and the adults fix theirs afterwards.

Okay I wasn't going to post about this but........
I too have a family member just like this maybe even more rude. He doesn't even wait to be asked to come and eat as soon as he gets to the persons home he is eatting. And if you did have appetizers he would eat most of them too. He fills his plate sooooo full that you can not tell he has a plate under all that food, doesn't care if there is any left for anyone either, then will go back and cleans up what is left, yes he is very much over weight.we had a party at our house long time ago and I was putting the food out for when people would come he just stated to help himself, I told him it isn't time to start and to wait till the others would be here, while his mom said he was hungry and I should let him eat then! I then said I would like it to look nice for when the others got here. While she then fixed him a plate and No he was not a small child. And even if the food has covers over it he will still start to eat and eat, and as fast as he can, like animal.Yes he is my
B-I-L.So some one like this doesn't care about who gets to eat as long as he does. And they don't relay hear what you tell them.I guess you just have to live with people like that.I have told my DH I don't what him in our house either for many other reasons too. Thank God he doesn't live close by 12 to 14 hrs away.I am sorry I said so much but this got to me.
