Re: A gift is a gift
Ms. Lynn,
I know just how you feel. I'm not old enough for grandkids yet, but I've done things for family and friends that have been done the same way. It really hurts but like you said you learn who to give the treasures to. I was touched to know that I'm not only one that this has happened to. Keep sewing and don't let people get you down. Yours truly, Kristi Young lynn <lynncarol33@...> wrote: When my grandchildren started arriving, I wanted to make them something pretty to keep forever. For the first grandson, I had quilted a small quilt for him of silhoutted cats in a window. It really came out nice and I was so happy to hand that quilt to my DIL. She seemed to like it and I thought it would be a family keepsake. About 5 years later, I was visiting them and their cat had a new litter of kitters. They brought out the box of kittens and......yep, you guessed it.....that quilt was used as bedding for the mother cat to have kittens on. My heart sunk, I'm sure that quilt was thrown out afterwards, but I bit my tongue and I never handed my DIL another quilt again. My DD saves things like that for her 5 children in what she calls "memory boxes". She saves all kinds of favorite clothes, toys, books, etc that the children outgrow. From time to time the grandchildren go through their memory boxes and enjoy looking at older loved items. They know that when they're grown up that the boxes go with them and it makes them happy. I have no issues at all about giving my handmade items to my DD as she understands how much of my time and love go into making them. DIL is another story, but I'm sure I'm not the only one with this sort of thing going on. You just learn who you can trust to take care of your hand crafted items. I seldom keep the things I make, most of my joy in making them is to give them to someone who's face lights up and is so happy to have it. Happy stitching.....Lynn --------------------------------- Check out the all-new Yahoo! From: "Donna" <haricats@...> To: <HookedOnEmbroidery@...> Sent: Sunday, January 21, 2007 11:18 AM Subject: [HookedOnEmbroidery] Embroidery tip but long story This is a little long so feel free to delete. Last spring I purchased my Ellegante. For 4 months I had so much fun stitching away, my love is FSL. Then last October 15 my stitching came to a screeching halt. The beeper went off and the machine locked up. I shipped it off to the dealer where I purchased the machine as it is a 3 hour drive. They had the machine for several weeks and I got it back around a month later. They said that the problem was a lot of thread was wound up deep inside the machine. Well I embroidered for about 5 hours and it locked up again. While it was gone the first time I found a wonderful dealer about an hour away, so I took the machine to him. He looked at the machine and felt that there was a major problem and suggested returning it to Babylock. The factory found that it had a bent shaft and had to order a part. Again I got it back about a month later. I picked up the machine from my wonderful dealer and had fun all weekend making quilt blocks. Then the thread broke and the machine wound a lot of thread again before I could get it stopped. Again the machine came to a screeching halt. So I took the machine back to him he cleaned out the thread and he asked one very important question, "Did you say you had to stop the machine, it did not stop when the thread broke?" I said yes the machine did not stop on its own. At this time he checked a thread sensor, it was not working. I was told that this sensor never goes out. Well Ellie is back home and stitching like a dream. My point is this, if you ever have your machine keep stitching after the thread is broken make it a point to tell the repair man. I feel that this what caused my problem back in October and took 3 different repairmen fixing my machine and it took one chance statement to find the real problem. said yes I did mind (LOL). If she didn't want the quilt I'd be happy to take it back. My side of the family has a kind of tradition that gifts are given back to the giver when the recipient passes on. When my mother in law passed, DH's sister just sent me back a beautiful jacket I had made for his mom. it was never worn and it was too small for anyone else in the family. Along with it was a very stained flannel backed satin night gown I had made for her. But....the quilt I made for her she kept (LOL) When an aunt on my side passed a few years ago, 2 cousins that lived close to her wanted me to take the 2 quilts back I had made for her. I asked if they would like to have them. They were overjoyed. Another aunt passed recently and a different cousin emailed me to ask if I wanted the 'beautiful quilt' sent back to me. I wrote back and asked her if she would like to have it. The answer I got back was she 'couldn't make up her mind if she wanted it or not' and would let me know if she put it in the mail to me. It's been over a month and I haven't heard anything so I guess she decided to keep it. she has always been a bit different in my opinion.<ggg> Karol -----Original Message-----

Subject: [HookedOnEmbroidery] Re: Things the Bug me... What do you think of this one--- My niece made a beautiful scripture quilt for her new daughter-in-law's mother. It took her two years to gather the themed material and scripture panels. It took several months to make the quilt, and assemble it and machine quilt it. She told the recipient it was a labor of love, and she hoped it would be well used. This week she got a call from the lady, asking if she would mind if the quilt was put in the coffin of her sister's mother- in-law!!! The deceased lady often complained of being cold. My poor niece was struck speechless. Now, that's REALLY "putting something away" Hugs, Caroline |

Hi,
Does anyone have for sale or free a crosstitich wedding sampler for the machine like they use to do in the pligrim days??? Would probably be bigger than one of our hoops so might need to be spilt and an alphabet in order to add the necessary wedding information. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Carolyn |

AD: *NEW tonight*! Decorative Delight set + a TIP
Carolyn Faulk
We have added a new decorative set that is very versatile to the site.
I put the swirling designs from one shoulder to the opposite side hem on a sweatshirt to show one idea of how the designs can be used. The designs are in mulitple sizes and in multi-color PLUS all one color. The smaller sizes would be great arranged on the leg of *pants* to dress them up. I used all gold color thread for the designs I put onto the cream colored sweatshirt. Almost any color would look equally nice. I hope you will enjoy seeing these new designs. ***TIP*** The "ragged" look on the edges of sewn on pieces of fabric has been seen on purchased clothing. If you have test sews that you don't know what you could do with them, you could just use a short straight stitch (or a fancy stitch) to fasten the square (or other shape) to the garment. Then trim about 3/4 inch from the outside egde of the stitches to get rid of the excess fabric. Then you could take sharp scissors and cut slits every 1/2 inch (or so) from the edge into the line of stitching. When the clothing item is washed, the edges would fray if the fabic piece is woven, and if the fabric piece is a lightweight knit, it may curl in unusual ways around the edge of the test sew. Might be really cute on kids clothing, but also work for adults! Have fun! -- Carolyn Detailed Designs: Cottages, Florals, Flourishes, & More www.carolyndesigns.com www.carolyndesigns.biz www.carolyndesigns.us |

So sorry you had to go thru all that, geez, what a way to lose it. But as you said, better eating habits means you still had to work at it, so good going on that part.

I'm lucky, my DH is pretty much the same, though he will admit that losing some would improve my overall health, so he's supportive with me getting just thin enough to be healthier, LOL. I'd like to lose between 60 - 80 lbs (over the next year). Merriweather ----- Original Message -----

First, I suffer from Migraine Headaches very very bad, almost daily. So, back in May of 2006, my Dr. put me on a med called Topomax. It has 2 pretty strong side affects to it, Hair loss and Pseudo-Anorexia. thankfully not "all" of my hair has fallen out. as for the weight loss, I used the med (along with better eating habits) and the weight has sort of fallen off. |
