Show Your Model Railroad – Central Coast Railroad Festival (October 4-6/San Luis Obispo Area, CA)
Small Layouts Welcome For This Event. Show Your Model Railroad – Central Coast Railroad Festival (October 4-6/San Luis Obispo Area, CA) The Central Coast Railroad Festival returns this year to San Luis Obispo and northern San Barbara Counties on October 4-6, 2024 (Friday-Sunday). As in past years I will organize a tour of model railroads and garden railroads. Last year we had thirty railroads on the tour. I would like you to consider participating in the tour. Participating in a layout tour is a great way to share your work and meet your fellow model and garden railroaders. You’ve probably worked hard on your railroad so you might as well get some recognition from people who will appreciate your efforts. We are only asking owners to be open for four or more hours on just one day. Additional days and hours are at the owner’s option, including "early bird" showings on Thursday, October 3. And we are asking owners in Santa Maria and areas south of Santa Maria to be open only on Sunday, October 6. All you need to do is operate your trains. I will do all the planning and publicity, as I have done for sixty-three previously tours since 2006, including eleven previous tours for the Central Coast Railroad Festival. This will be a free, self-guided tour. No buses will be used. If you have any questions before committing to the tour, please ask. In any event, please contact me in the next several days if you are interested so we can add your railroad to the tour. Once you have been added to the tour I will contact you to set your day(s) and hours. Thank you. Bob Chaparro Moderator Model Railroads of Southern California Layout Tour Coordinator - 2024 Central Coast RR Festival Hemet, CA 951-265-2482 (Cell) Festival Website: http://www.ccrrf.com/ P.S.: I will be organizing the layout tour for the 2025 Pacific Coast Region/NMRA annual convention in San Luis Obispo. This will take place on March 27-30, 2025. I’ll be seeking railroads for this event, too.

When no Runaround (UK: loop) track: Gravity Switching
2
Two days ago, I saw an instance of prototype Gravity Switching. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ULQNLXtBtMo They have a runaround track is too inconveniently away, and the main line has enough of a grade so cars will start to roll by themselves, and under control by a rider adjusting a hand brake. The cars are left on the track leading to the point end of the turnout, then the loco runs ahead into that spur, then its turnout is reset for the main. The rider loosens the brake, the cars roll, then the rider stops them after they get past the fouling point. The loco goes to the main, the turnout is "normalized," then the loco can back up and couple to the cars. The loco is now on the other end of the cars from where it started. Come to think of it, I think the Strasburg Railroad does this on its "Paradise" end. Mike Nickerson Living in Concord, California, USA. That is in the San Francisco Bay Area, You may not be aware of this city of 120,000 people. Because it is 21 miles due East from the much larger Oakland (pop 440,000), the label for Concord is overshadowed by that of the larger city. And San Francisco is 30 miles West of us.

PLEASE NOTE WE DO NOT ACCEPT SALES AND WANTS ADVERTS - EBAY IS THERE FOR THEM. This group is intended for the average model railroader who does not have an entire basement or even an entire room to devote to a layout. Here we will discuss smaller layouts -- table-tops, shelf layouts, micro-layouts, modules and modular layouts -- and how they can be designed and built for enjoyment and modelling satisfaction. The above is an example borrowed from Carl Arendt's excellent site http://carendt.com/scrapbook/linkindex/index.html and also at http://carendt_backup.gully.org/ Due to restrictions in file space, 4 separate groups had been set up for the sharing of design files and photos. /g/sldfiles /g/sldfiles2 /g/sldfiles3 Due to space restrictions on groups.io photos from the Small Layout Design yahoo group are located at the following /g/small-layout-design-photos By the way, we do not tolerate trolls or flaming

The special focus is on On30 mini and micro layouts, but there were some wonderful models in other scales this year too, including G! The On30 mini layouts featured this year were Gary Beatty's Puerto Borracho, the Pickled Parrot Rum & Transportation Co. (new this year!), the Punta Margarita, Bob Kurner's Typhoon Lagoon, Scott Carter's Cinnamon Creek, Sean William's and Kevin Spady's Wandering Spruce (new this year!), the Gruesome Gulch (also new this year), Greg Lorton's Isle Coco, Justin Rasa's Arizona Dreamin' and so much more! Huge thanks again to Gary and Colleen Beatty for putting this thing on. Bob Chaparro Moderator Model Railroads of Southern California /g/ModelRailroadsofSoCalif

strategy for custom decals?
6
This is probably not the correct group for this, any pointers to a Model Railroad group that could address this appreciated? I'm trying to figure out the best way to get a "custom" decal for an HO locomotive. I have an unlettered HO tender and I want to put a road number on it, e.g. '4193' What is the best way to get the decals for the digits? Do people cut out the individual numbers from a sheet and butt them together, or are there vendors that print custom decals? If I cut out the individual numbers and butt them together, I'm concerned about getting the alignment and spacing right. Thanks for any pointers. ------------------------------ Please sign your posts so we know who you are Thanks Bruce Wilson Moderating Team/Owner

asparagus fern.
6
A little off topic, but I hope someone here has an answer. I've had good luck building evergreen trees using asparagus(?) fern. I had a large amount from a kit by a long defunct company, but I'm running out. I've looked on Amazon and done a google search but can't find anything other that a small amount for decoration. If you know of a source, please let me know. -- The asylum is being run by the inmates!

Jouef HO Turnout Radius?
4
I saw some photos of Jouef HO turnouts. The radius looked pretty tight, and looks curved throughout, somewhat like classic Atlas HO Snap Switches. One eBay'er, selling similar curves, said those were of radius 385 mm. 385mm is 15.16" -- can anybody confirm it, and tell what the turnout and track geometry is?

New On30 Layout being started
7
.m This is the most current version of my On30 Layout being built in my spare room. The layout is a multi Cameo set of modules that suggest a turn of the century mining/logging operation oon the inside passage on the west coast of British Columbia. each module features self contained lighting and power for DCC operations. Motive mower is geared locomotives and short industrial freight cars. feel free to comment. Layout module frames have been built and are awaiting final plan authority of the resident accountant. Modules 1&2 form one scene and modules 3&4 are a separate Mine and Log Camp up in the mountains beyond the Logging Mill/Dock.
