strategy for custom decals?

This is probably not the correct group for this, any pointers to a Model Railroad group that could address this appreciated?
I'm trying to figure out the best way to get a "custom" decal for an HO locomotive.
I have an? unlettered HO tender and I want to put a road number on it, e.g. '4193'
What is the best way to get the decals for the digits? Do people cut out the individual numbers from a sheet and butt them together, or are there vendors that print custom decals?
If I cut out the individual numbers and butt them together, I'm concerned about getting the alignment and spacing right.
Thanks for any pointers.

I'm interested in this subject. I have a need to print decals for some of my favorite shortline railroads. In fact, I recently purchased a Canon laser printer?to utilize the white toners available from a company in Germany, just as soon as I can justify to my better-half why I need to spend hundreds of dollars to print a handful of decals? Anyway, Shortline/fictional railroads are certainly part of small layout design. So let's hear what others are doing?

Three suggestions

For decal paper, Tango Papa is excellent.?

Richard Brennan of TT West does custom decals and is excellent and reasonable. ?

I use PowerPoint to generate decal and sign art. PowerPoint is 300 dpi so a 44x34 slide prints at 1200 dpi. I will do a clinic at the NMRA conv on using PowerPoint for decals and to do great signs a 4x6 matte prints.?
