Quantar programing questions 3
Hello, I have a 900 mhz quantar repeater I want to setup for off grid use. It has the battery cable labeled for 28 volts. I can't find the settings in the RSS software to enable the DC power. The batteries will be charged external to the quantar I just need it to power up and operate when dc is applied. I am using WinRSS 14.12. Can anybody help me with what the correct settings are for this configuration? Thank you Kim Gross KI0E

Repeater recommendation 14
Thanks to everyone who responded. I will answer the questions that were submitted. The grant is for new equipment. Site and frequencies have been secured. I was asking for brand names and sources for new repeater equipment, duplexers, and antennas for VHF and UHF. Each installation is scheduled to be dual-band. We will be using LDF4-50A, as each run is expected to be 200 feet or less. What vendors are recommended? What brand/model of repeaters are recommended? What duplexers are recommended? What antennas are recommended? The repeaters are to be used for Amateur Radio wideband, should be in the 40-50 watt output range, have built-in power supplies, and be adaptable for use with an external controller. Plans are to use the ARCOM 210 as all of the repeaters will be linked on a separate UHF frequency to a hub repeater at a central location. The UHF hub repeater already supports 12 VHF and UHF repeaters that are in service. The request for recommendation is for additional equipment that will be added to the existing system. Thanks in advance de David, K5RAV

Repeater recommendation 13
A grant may be obtained to install Amateur Radio VHF and UHF repeaters. The grant funds are limited, so recommendations for new VHF and UHF repeaters that offer the best value for the price are desired. This is the first time the club is looking for new equipment! Thanks de David K5RAV

TKR-840-3 replace PASSPORT Firmware with original Firmware
Hi all, How can I flash firmware back to NON-PASSPORT firmware? I have KPG-47D, do I need SJ-180 to enter Firmware Programming Mode? Hope it possible to convert back so I can use KPG-47D or possibly program with SJ-180. Thanks, Jim.

Duplexer Recommendations
Hi all, I've got a set of DB4060 duplexers and I'm sure some of you have seen my posts over the last few months about them. Other DB4060s I've seen over the years have worked well. However, I'm looking for recommendations on other duplexers (either brand or type) that perhaps last a bit longer and aren't as succeptable to lightning hits. From what I've gathered, the capacitor in series (or lumped) with the coupling loop is the largest failure point in the DB cans. My particular set of cans had two that got obliterated due to lightning before I got them. Two Johanson 5602 capacitors later, and those cans are working fine. Later come to find out that the back two towards the N-Tee are loose as a goose. Two more ordered and got those put in. They seem to tune up just fine on the VNA. One of my posts a while back also mentioned the silver plating. I took two of the cans apart (boy is the manufacturing on these cans just horrible for what they cost) and boy is the silver plating shedding like a German shepherd. Looking to get these replated, or get a new set from DB themselves. Although, I'm not sure it's worth the effort and money. Anyways, hamfest season is here and I plan on looking for some decent cans. I know...I know, you always take a risk when buying used cans. I always bring a Agilent VNA with me and ask if I can analyze them before I buy them. (Yes, I knew before buying the DB4060 that lightning had hit them). What brand and/or type of duplexer should I be looking for? Ones that are much higher quality than the DB cans. I also have a set of Wacom combiners that I bought and converted to duplexers. They're on my current system in Erie. I'm using all bp/br cans. I'm not using any of the BP only cans at the moment. Those notch stubs seem to be able to handle lightning a whole lot better than the small 250v piston trimmers on the DB. Sorry, this post might be all over the place, but welcome to the inside of my head. I know there are other brands out there, but what would you recommend me to keep an eye out for? Ones that have been reliable even over the years? Joe KC3LMP

my latest issues with a MASTR II PLL Exciter. 6
I finally got around to working on a MII mobile in the E chassis I got some time ago. The RX crystal arrived from KLOVE and it went in and with a few turns of the netting cap is on freq. Hooray (whew) ! I took the cover off the front end and checked for tin whiskers, didn't see any but wiped the walls with alcohol and buttoned it up. The exciter came with a rock in it for a 145MHz freq and its OK. I am using a NHRC3/M2 controller and its working. I fired it up and adjusted the ferrite slug on the PLL down and got lock, the slug is stuck however and I fear trying to move it will crack it. I was using a 250mW Bird meter for the exciter load and saw it pegged so I fed into my COM120B where I am reading 480mW. And furthermore, the 2 driver transistors on the PA look overheated, or maybe they were changed and the tech left lots of solder flux on the leads but I would like to drive the PA properly. I have a MSR2000 PA I could use externally and I may even prefer it outside with its big heatsink over the mobile PA but that's in the future. I checked all resistor values associated with the exciter output driver and they measure within 5% I'm curious what can cause this excessive output? I have 9.9V on the 10V supply, nothing there to adjust. I don't see a mention in the manual for a solution to excessive output. Maybe a transistor has too much gain? I hate having to go to New London, the last time I inquired about something simple I got a screwy response off the subject, not a good customer relationship. Anyone with a PLL exciter I can beg borrow or buy, or a way to make this one good? Let me mention something also I hadn't expected. Listening to the test signal I kept hearing a noise related to a hiss or open SQ while reducing the drive and tweaking the front end. Moving my hand around the exciter raised or lowered the hiss but it never went away. I put a scope probe on the 10V line and the 9V point in the exciter showed some RF on it, then after wasting an hour placing a .01 bypass on anything I thought needed additional bypass with no result I looked up at the fluorescent lamp some 4 feet away and switched it off and no more hiss in a weak signal ! Is this thing supposed to be that sensitive? Obviously with the top cover off that might be expected but I hadn't ever experienced this with anything before. Reid

Quantar - Wrong prompt received 4
I had a Quantar (Epic 1) dropped in my lap and it has an issue I've not experienced. When attempting to connect with RSS, I get "Wrong Prompt Received" when I try to read it. In searching I see the same question posed about 5 years ago, but no responses. The greater interwebs don't seem to address this either. Anyone have a direction to go on this? Matt AL0R

Looking for Quantar UHF Range 0 info 6
I have Range 0 (380-433) Quantar Exciter and Receiver modules that I need schematics for. They are DLN1214 (CRX4022A) RX and DLN1215 (CLX4000A) TX. I have the thick service manual and asked MOL for any update sheets but they don't cover these later modules. There is a PDF on Repeater-Builder but it only covers installation. I'm trying to see if I can move them up to Range 2 since they look different than the standard R1-R4 blocks with the IC3200 VCO module (having discreet parts instead). Thanks! Tony

Question about polyphasers 13
I'm going to be ordering a polyphaser surge protector to put in line with the 2M repeater heliax. Im noticing some have specific frequency ranges. That has me wondering, does that mean they will block signals they are not rated for? Seems like that might be useful for having a little extra filtering.

DMR & GMRS Repeater use of same antenna? 4
I had a question posed to me so thought I would pose it here. The local club has a 7cm DMR repeater antenna is at 500 ft.. They are interested in adding a GMRS repeater use cavities to combine the two to use the same antenna. Has anyone seen that style of arrangement? I know major radio markets you see FMs use combiners, but this arrangement is not involving only transmit. Any thoughts appreciated. -- Mikeal R. Hughes, BA., MA., D.Min., Th.D.
