Encoding PL on a kenwood TKR850 with ASL3 2
Hey guys. Hope all is well. I don't know if this can be done. A group I am helping out, they have an scom7330 hooked up to a Kenwood TKR850 repeater. The way its set up, it encodes PL on COS. In other words, when the receiver goes hot it encodes PL. They are thinking of switching to ASL3 as the controller. Can this still be accomplished? The 7330 does it very well, but wanted to make sure we wouldn't lose that capability if we switch to ASL3. If anyone can help, that would be great. Cheers, Jed

MTR2000 Locking Up 16
Hey Guys: I have an MTR2000, which has worked flawlessly since I got it in the summer of 2020; a real workhorse! Lately, I have found the station non-responsive and upon inspection, I find the first LED (the left most LED) red. I have to power cycle the station to get it to come back to life (it's an AC powered station, btw). Today, I spun up my old XP box and used the RSS s/w to run a diagnostic check... everything seems to be OK (although I am not sure why the SCM RAM and ROM were not tested): I also looked at the Error Log: Interesting... only 3 lines? I left the PC connected and RSS running for an hour, when I returned, there are a couple of new entries: The lockups / station freezing are happening about once a day, sometimes once every 2 days. Any ideas? Thanks! Ramesh, VA3UV, WA3UV

MTR3000 Sensitivity Issues 10
Hello, all. I'm still working on figuring out the situation with our local club's MTR3000 2M FM Repeater. Its sensitivity varies, and sometimes passes noise even though it is set for PL. Yesterday, we used a Motorola test set to generate an FM signal with the appropriate PL tone into the repeater's receiver, and observed what level was required to activate the COS/COR light on the front panel. The literature states the receive sensitivity should be approximately .25 uV. However, the receiver didn't activate until we were up to 4 uV or so. Our unit has a preselector, and bypassing it made no difference. Is there a common problem with the receiver that I might look for? We initially thought our varying sensitivity and noise issues were antenna related, but after finding this, I'm more inclined to think it's the receiver. Thanks for any info! Ramsey Com3 schematics 10
Hello all, I have been looking for some older schematics for a Com3 service monitor. I have a earlier design with a serial of 1554 and a RF board from 1986 as etched in the board. The schematics on repeater builder which is the same ones across the internet are later that do not match up to what I have mainly for the power supply. Yes, I could remove the RF board and reverse engineer it but would rather not if I don't have to. The problem is while doing some maintenance, cleaning the noisy controls and replacing the internal battery I noticed while the unit is powered off there is 23 volts going to the battery. Ouch. When the unit is powered on the voltage goes to 13.6 volts. Voltage throughout the Com3 is at the regulated voltage thank goodness. Going by the schematics available this doesn't add up and appears virtually impossible to happen. Maybe someone has run into this or can see things differently or even have some schematics that match this unit. Thank you in advance for any information. Alan Bartkowiak N2ZVN

Sinclair Q2330E vs. TX RX 28-37-02A 15
Greetings all, I have narrowed down my list of potential duplexers to buy for a 2m repeater that the local club is building to Sinclair Q2330E and TX RX 28-37-02A. Both have very similar specs in terms of insertion loss and isolation. The only noticeable difference is that the Sinclair has six cavities while the TXRX has 4 cavities but larger. Nevertheless, they still provide the same isolation with the same loss. I would appreciate some insight into choosing one over the other. Both items fit our budget, so price is not a factor to consider. Thank you, Sepehr N6IRN

MICOR UHF PA available 5
I’ve got a MICOR PA laying around that I don’t need. TLE1693A. 47 watts out with around 1-3 in when I tested it a year or 2 ago. Not sure if that’s the rating, or if it’s supposed to be 75 watts etc. but it is putting out 47. $30 plus actual shipping cost to take it off my hands. (Shipping will probably be 25 -45 depending on location) Contact me directly at my email here. 73w0sky@... Thanks Skyler W0SKY

Tuning/programming a Kenwood NXR 1800 repeater 11
Does anyone know if an NXR 1800 repeater will tune itself when programming? Example, programming for a GMRS repeater 462.65+ offset and then later want to program it for a frequency of 440.950. Will the repeater auto align itself or does that have to be done manually with a service monitor still? Thanks. commercial UHF repeater recommendation 20
An agency for whom I volunteer has been granted a repeater pair in the 460/465 MHz range. They want to put up a repeater. Of course, they don't have their use case figured out completely, but they want me to put together a budget. They are planning to order DMR mobiles and HT's, so a DMR repeater is desirable but could go with an FM repeater. They have unrealistically low budget expectations. But, who better knows low budget repeaters than the experts herein? Should I be looking for a used Motorola 8400? A bodged-together pair of mobiles and kit? Another brand? At this point I don't know if they want a fixed location or a transportable unit. I think they will decide that they want a transportable unit because they really don't have access to a location high enough to cover the service area. Any recommendations or offers of used equipment would be appreciated. In another organization, I am part owner and trustee of a 900MHz repeater originally built on an MSF5000 platform and then upgraded to a newer Motorola. I am also part owner of a DMR UHF repeater based on the Motorola 8400. I also own two Yaesu DR-1XDR repeaters that are in service. I am pretty sure the DR-1XDR will not reach 460/465 but I haven't researched that yet. 73 Kevin N5KRG

MTR3000 J7 question 8
I am going to be setting my first MTR3000 up in a few days. I see there are two pins in J7 that are labeled for RX audio. Does either pin provide flat, unsquelched audio? I am working on building the wiring harness, and the repeater is at a site about 40 miles away. Thanks, Kevin, K9HX

Astron Power Supply Grounding 11
We found that the negative lead from the Astron power supply was internally grounded to the chassis and ultimately to the mains power outlet and back to the electrical panel and to our grounding copper pipe. Researching Astron's technical documents, it was found that this terminal is normally not grounded but there have been a few from the factory that were internally grounded for special circumstances. According to factory representatives and a factory schematic, this terminal should not be grounded. In actual practice, I can state that a power supply should NEVER be grounded. Portions this high current was being passed through a very small power cord conductor and to the electrical box. This can and does create a ground current loop and will cause a problem. The negative or possibly the chassis of a unit can then be tied to a "Star" grounding topology and ultimately to the main grounding bus bar at the destination unit. The Astron unit was pulled, dismantled, examined and corrected. FYI, never allow the power source to be internally grounded. Thank you, Gordon Patenaude WA0WSR

Quantar question 7
Hey guys. Hope everyone is doing well. I've got 2 quantars, a vhf and a 900. I'm running them in testing on the bench. I'm asking cause I know Moto can be kind of strange about this. I've got both set at low power. Am I better off running them on high power, cause of the PA? I wasn't sure with the quantar, but wanted to ask. I'm trying to put these things through their paces. Cheers, Jed

Possibly in the market for a quantar UHF 50W for gmrs 3
Im mulling over Looking for a complete plug and play uhf 50w (will be set for 25w) 115v quantar that can cover gmrs without issue. Price is a concern I'm looking for a working unit that won't break the bank. How much I can afford will depend on how much I get from some stuff I'm selling next month. But I'm looking to upgrade my tkr851 to a quantar and repurpose the 851 for a lower profile gmrs repeater in the future or I would possibly consider a swap on the Kenwood plus cash to a quantar. My frequency is 462 / 467.550 pair. I have a decent compact txrx uhf 4 cavity duplexer i will be upgrading at the site and would like to upgrade the repeater while I'm at it. I'm primarily a moto man. I'm partial to motorola stuff. Thanks. Robert
