Astron Power Supply Grounding 11
We found that the negative lead from the Astron power supply was internally grounded to the chassis and ultimately to the mains power outlet and back to the electrical panel and to our grounding copper pipe. Researching Astron's technical documents, it was found that this terminal is normally not grounded but there have been a few from the factory that were internally grounded for special circumstances. According to factory representatives and a factory schematic, this terminal should not be grounded. In actual practice, I can state that a power supply should NEVER be grounded. Portions this high current was being passed through a very small power cord conductor and to the electrical box. This can and does create a ground current loop and will cause a problem. The negative or possibly the chassis of a unit can then be tied to a "Star" grounding topology and ultimately to the main grounding bus bar at the destination unit. The Astron unit was pulled, dismantled, examined and corrected. FYI, never allow the power source to be internally grounded. Thank you, Gordon Patenaude WA0WSR

Quantar question 7
Hey guys. Hope everyone is doing well. I've got 2 quantars, a vhf and a 900. I'm running them in testing on the bench. I'm asking cause I know Moto can be kind of strange about this. I've got both set at low power. Am I better off running them on high power, cause of the PA? I wasn't sure with the quantar, but wanted to ask. I'm trying to put these things through their paces. Cheers, Jed

Possibly in the market for a quantar UHF 50W for gmrs 3
Im mulling over Looking for a complete plug and play uhf 50w (will be set for 25w) 115v quantar that can cover gmrs without issue. Price is a concern I'm looking for a working unit that won't break the bank. How much I can afford will depend on how much I get from some stuff I'm selling next month. But I'm looking to upgrade my tkr851 to a quantar and repurpose the 851 for a lower profile gmrs repeater in the future or I would possibly consider a swap on the Kenwood plus cash to a quantar. My frequency is 462 / 467.550 pair. I have a decent compact txrx uhf 4 cavity duplexer i will be upgrading at the site and would like to upgrade the repeater while I'm at it. I'm primarily a moto man. I'm partial to motorola stuff. Thanks. Robert

IDing at the beginning of a contact 21
This subject may have already been covered however, I could not find the Q&A on requirement of identifying at the beginning of a conversation. I'll review part 97 (again) since the last decade I have done so as well. And yes, this may be off topic and I have posted this on FCC rules GIO and some other less used ones. Being that this group is huge and very active I want to (once again) tap the knowledge base. Also, have my noise filter on, LOL. -- - Regards, Karl Shoemaker To contact me, please visit SRG's web site at http://www.srgclub.org for the current email address.

SLR5700 7
Hi Motorola DMR Experts Is there any way to key a 5700 repeater locally, with a simple contact closure from the DB25 connector on the back? I don't see a PTT Pin Out. When installing at a site thru a TX combiner it would be more convenient to key locally instead of using a portable programmed for that repeater. Regards, Charles F. Kenwood TKR-D810-K2 5
Does anyone have the pinout diagram and how to set the software up to run the Kenwood TKR-D810-K2 DMR machine in analog only with a repeater controller? I can hear people talking at there computer saying why not just use a analog version. For now, this is what we have and later on I'll program the repeater for DMR only. Baby steps for lots of hams to do the conversion over from analog to DMR only machines. Some folks need some time as you move there cheese around. Thanks! Steven H. N8RLW

Looking for Kenwood TK-8302E 3
Hi all, This is off topic, but wondering if anyone has a Kenwood TK-8302E 400-470MHz mobile laying around they want to sell? I have the TK8302K version, but the E version will cover the entire 70cm band instead of 1-2 MHz at a time. Thanks, Chad WI9HF

Editing codeplug report Quantar VHF R1 narrow band analog voice only 5
Greetings, I am attempting to set up a R1 VHF narrow band Quanter. I do not intend to use an outboard controller. Don't require wireline feature. I have attached the codeplug configuration and the settings I'm not sure of ..I have placed a "Question Mark" beside the entry. I'm hoping someone can advise or better yet edit my attachment . (NotePad ?) and send back to me. I'm not sure of which settings are necessary (perhaps required). I'm sorry to say "Good Bye" to my MSR 2000 after 27 yrs of trouble free service. I'd be grateful if someone can answer my (??) questions on the codeplug report. Thank you so much. Tim AE7TH

Separate RX and TX Antenna 15
Hi, I'm planning out a 2m repeater installation for the local club here. The repeater's antenna is going to be on top of a two-story building. I'm curious to know your opinion on a dual antenna setup. That way, we'll save a lot by not having to use a duplexer. On the other hand, I am not quite sure if that's going to mess with the repeater's coverage or reception. We could put the antennas about 15-20ft far from each other. I was thinking about a Comet GP9 for TX and a Discone for RX. The antennas will still be on the same roof but on opposite edges. The repeater in question is an SLR 5700 if that makes any difference. 73, Sepehr N6IRN

6M Portable Ducky vs high band 1/4 wave whip SWR 23
To add 6 meters to the portable antenna discussion and after reading at least most of the high band/ UHF portable antenna discussions, this is what I found just playing around with a foot long top loaded 6M rubber duck antenna (I believe made by Antennex a number of years ago) and a 19 inch long telescopic antenna attached to an antenna analyzer approximating 6M &2M portable usage.... Compared to a 1/4 wave 19" whip, the top loaded foot long whip SWR bandwidth is way too narrow to cover multiple frequencies and keep the SWR below 2, being something under 500KHz BW, and that is under ideal conditions with either a 1/4 wavelength wire dangling down to make the other half of the antenna, or the portable metal belt clip making contact with a cabinet or other large metal object, or a bare hand making contact with the portable belt clip metal. The 1/4 wave whip with aluminum foil wrapped against the antenna connector shield and extending beyond the borders of the insulated case on the analyzer, and bare hand on the foil to simulate an HT, SWR varied from 2.5-4 depending on frequency , but the bandwidth of the full 1/4 wave whip was way beyond any SWR changes from local factors. Our conclusions.... All HT transmitters need to be able to tolerate very high VSWR most of the time. A 6M rubber duck is extremely inefficient and definitely requires a counterpoise, even with top loading. Basically forget using them without an external antenna separated by coax unless very close range! Even 2M portables should have a counterpoise to the antenna. See 2 pics of our set up. John o

Grounding for Low-Level Repeater 8
Hi, We're thinking about installing a repeater on the roof of a three-story building. I would like some opinions on how one should handle grounding ans bonding in this situation. This is a commercial building and we only have access to the roof and a room on the third floor where networking equipment is stored. Thanks, Sepehe N6IRN

US government recognizes amateur radio 6
It appears Congress may be in favor of this bill for amateur radio. I'm not a lawyer so some of the language was a little too much for this old guy. Now, they just need to include wording about amateur radio remote stations (repeaters) a rental break, such as with the USFS and BLM, etc Input welcome. -- - Regards, Karl Shoemaker To contact me, please visit SRG's web site at http://www.srgclub.org for the current email address.

Motorola CP 185 portable
Chad hi, I know this is well off topic for this group but I just figured I'd throw it out and see if anyone is interested. I have two Motorola CP 185UHF portables. Both radios work 100%, battery seem to be holding a charge well. I would prefer to sell them as a pair and they have one battery each, desk charger, which is used, brand new desk, charger unopened, and a speaker microphone. Also the whole package for $250. If interested, please respond. Respond to my call book email address. Again I apologize for this being off topic but thank you for looking.Nelson WI9HF/WRPL979 Janesville Wisconsin 608-754-8671 Send from my spectrum iPhone 16.
