Mtr2000 / 3000 power supply repair value.
I think?Chris is right.... There's a gaggle of these things out there, many with bad PSUs and the rest of them with bad PSUs in the making! My request is that you be "reasonable" in your fee structure, as there will already be a not-insignificant shipping charge both ways. Thanks for thinking of the rest of us with MTR stations. 73 Matt King -?AK4MK President - Columbus Amateur Radio Club SKYWARN Coordinator - Harris County, Georgia ARES District Emergency Coordinator - West Central Georgia ARES Emergency Coordinator - Muscogee/Harris Counties, Georgia On Mon, Mar 3, 2025 at 12:14?PM Chris Baldwin via <vtat1271=aol.com@groups.io> wrote:

My concern is two fold.? First problem is setting a fair price.? Motorola was getting 700 and something when they were still doing it and that's a silly high number.? ?But there are issues with being too low. There are 2 failure modes with these things that I have seen.? If it's past those, it's typically fried and unrepairable.? ?And dealing with hams for 30 years. I know if I attach a number then I would deal with guys raising hell I can't fix it for that number when it's not one if the two normal issues.? The other being power supplies just showing up.? When my ham buddies would find out I work on radios stuff would appear on my door step without even a note.? Then a call a month later to see if it was done.??
?
So I am trying to figure it all out.??

开云体育Give them a ‘not to exceed’ price that covers you, then charge them a reasonable price if it is an easy fix. As to the other, unless you are only doing this as a hobby, there is no reason you shouldn’t be able to repair something within a month.?Just my two cents Tom KI5ELV On Mar 3, 2025, at 11:56?AM, Keith via groups.io <kb8vul@...> wrote:

Thats what RMA numbers are for. If you don't send it with an RMA number, well, you don't get shit.
?
Your other option could be to stockpile a few and just do 1 for 1 swaps, they send the dead in, you verify it's repairable, ship a replacement and fix the dead at your leisure.

开云体育Keith – ? I have a couple laying under the bench that sounded like a 22 rifle shot when they blew up, given the failure rate of these supplies I am sure there are lots of them out there waiting for repair. ? Trying to gage the number of failed mtr supplies out there and if it would be beneficial to me to start repairing them.? Yes I know how.? ?Have a number of them I have already repaired? ? 开云体育Keith – ? My bad, getting old and forgot these indeed are Quantar Power Supplies. ? Andy / NC4AB ? From: repeater-builder@groups.io <repeater-builder@groups.io> On Behalf Of Keith via groups.io

Or at least wasn't there when it happened.? I have seen that with Quantar supplies however.? ?I would be interested to see what your look like and if they are repairable.? ?Would you be willing to split the case on them and send me a couple pics? |
Seems to me the market place for repairing Quantar power supplies is as big as the MTR power supplies. I have 2 of the 100 watt Quantar supplies dead on the bench right now.? The main circuit card fuse exploded as I plugged it in (cover off). Dan K5FVL ?

I've wanted to replace some of my MICOR Repeaters with MTR-2000 or MTR-3000 units - mainly to free up some space in the cabinets, and to be ready for the future requirement to go Narrowband (here in Western WA State.) I see the MTR-series Repeaters for sale on eBay, etc., but I haven't replaced them because I know the power supplies are a weak spot. We've already lost one - 100W UHF MTR-3000 supply, which we bought brand-new from Motorola.
?
We've added a UPS to all of the MTR Repeaters, trying to eliminate the power cycling on or off during power mains failures. Fortunately, we had a spare MTR to pull a replacement AC supply from, and we'd like to get the failed supply repaired. But not at the going repair rate - it's often less expensive to buy a complete, used, working Repeater than to buy or repair a replacement AC supply. |
