A linear regulator really isn't the best idea here since power conservation is a factor. As shown about 50% of the power would be dissipated as heat. A switching regulator should be able to achieve

If you go with a 24 volt system, no need to bye the 24 to 12 reg for 100+. You can build it for 20 to 30 dollars. This might help you.
