9.2 Inch Rwy Gun

image.png
View of a 9.2 inch gun on railway truck mounting at the Elswick Works, c1917 (TWAM ref. ). ¡®Workshop of the World¡¯ is a phrase often used to describe Britain¡¯s manufacturing dominance during the Nineteenth Century. It¡¯s also a very apt description for the Elswick Works and Scotswood Works of Vickers Armstrong and its predecessor companies. These great factories, situated in Newcastle along the banks of the River Tyne, employed hundreds of thousands of men and women and built a huge variety of products for customers around the globe. The Elswick Works was established by William George Armstrong (later Lord Armstrong) in 1847 to manufacture hydraulic cranes. From these relatively humble beginnings the company diversified into many fields including shipbuilding, armaments and locomotives. By 1953 the Elswick Works covered 70 acres and extended over a mile along the River Tyne. This set of images, mostly taken from our Vickers Armstrong collection, includes fascinating views of the factories at Elswick and Scotswood, the products they produced and the people that worked there. By preserving these archives we can ensure that their legacy lives on. (Copyright) We're happy for you to share this digital image within the spirit of The Commons. Hi All,

As you can see by the address list, I have had a number of areas of interest.

I am hoping to donate my collection to a nearby club or group that can benefit from it. Should such an organization accept this donation, they may make use of it as they see fit - keep it all, distribute to the members, sell it on line or at a flea market, whatever makes the most sense for the organization. The same applies if an individual accepts it.

In addition to the rolling stock identified in the attached list, there is a similar volume of rolling stock as well as construction materials, detail parts, decals, tools, display shelves, and more. There is also a number of books related to my areas of interest.

I am located in Churchville, Harford County, Maryland. If you are interested and can pick up the material, please send an e-mail to me at the above address or the one in my signature block.

Many of you may not be aware of the Military Railway Study Group formerly the WW2 RSG. We obviously cover a much wider area than just railguns but if you are looking for train compositions, specialist ammo wagons etc to support your gun them the MRSG is the place to go. It only costs ?10 per year which includes 6 eBulletins or ?13.50 for printed ones. Unfortunately foe those of you overseas it costs a bit more for printed as postage is ?3.25 per issue currently to the EU, we have members worldwide but most take the digital Bulletin at ?10.
