Re: NC40A files

Best solution is find the stuff you want elsewhere and post it here if there are
no copyright issues.? FYI I claim "fair use" on schematics and sections of text
at a bare minimum.

Allison

Re: NC40A files

I am seriously confused by all this.

IF I posted a file to the other group it is mine to copy and reuse.?
Since its closed and I un-subbed getting that stuff is not an issue
or a factor.

Why?
Typically it taken was from my own rather large archive (142GB!)
of material saved and collated.? So I can post it in any forum as
desired for reference.? ?Over the years that archive has helped
a lot of people or provided a common circuit or text to work from.

So IF I post anything I gave ME permission.? IF that annoys, sorry.

Allison

Re: Do you have a favorite home brew short wave receiver to build with scouts?

It is:???

However the other is equally as good save for they are out of stock.

The key thing is not so much which is better but which one can you get!

Re: NC40A files

Hi Guys,

I understand the frustration. While it's not my doing, I am trying to work on a good solution for this.?

Could you be more specific?

Is THIS the circuit?

or do you mean a store bought kit?

Re: NC40A files

Hi David,
I don't like the group shitting down either, but I'm just kinda on the "it is what it is" train. I feel there were still lots of good discussions but hopefully those can continue here. I specifically asked Chuck last night if emailing the NC40A files to interested people was ok, he said it's a good learning project and that was fine. I'm not sure of posting them to the group is all that different but he is not usually one to mince words, that's why I quoted him in my comment.

At the end of all this I just hope people can be civil and have some educational fun.

Re: NC40A files

When Chuck posted about shutting qrp-tech down he wrote this:

"Please do not migrate
files to other groups. They were put here by the owners and they have all rights to same."

and this thread, while not putting files in the "Files" section of the new group, still flies in the face of his wishes. Did you check with Chuck before posting these? Because I did.

Re: NC-40 Multiband??

Additional to what Allison said about the Si5351A...

The 160MHz upper limit is the first revision of the chip, Si5351. The second revision "A" i.e. Si5351A, has an upper limit of 200MHz according to the datasheet. This "A" revision of the chip is what you will find in the QRP Labs Si5351A Synth kit (some would call "breakout board") see . I believe any other similar Si5351A boards are also using the latest chip. Very few of the first revision were produced. But the internet has the memory of a herd of elephants and the moment someone writes 160MHz somewhere, this is laid in stone for all eternity hi hi.?

As Allison said, DDS in the form of the AD9850 is old now, and the performance (spurious free dynamic range SFDR) is poor in comparison to more modern and cheaper alternatives like the Si5351A. There are some high end DDS such as the AD9910 and AD9912, these are not "new" either anymore, but will allow you to reach 400MHz (with 1GHz reference); and at HF they are very clean. The penalty is that they are a very expensive part, and power hungry, and of course you have to provide a clean 1GHz reference for them which is not cheap either. The tiny Si5351A is hard to beat, for HF work.?

Two additional points about the Si5351A:

1) Crosstalk: the Si5351A datasheet claims (in the DC characteristics section!) the output impedance is 50-ohms. If you load it with 50-ohms you will find the amplitude cut in half and the waveform much less square. Another problem is that you get crosstalk between the three outputs. People have tested this and found that at 1K load or above, the crosstalk between outputs is negligible. Therefore if you need to use more than one of the three outputs, and if you must drive a low impedance load, and if you care about crosstalk, I suggest buffers.?

2) Phase noise: the phase noise performance of the Si5351A is very good. I did some detailed measurements, so did?Kevin ZL1UJG. These are based round the QCX 5W CW transceiver
but are also relevant to anyone using the Si5351A. These measurements are all written up here:

Of particular note, I discovered that if the Si5351A is loaded by 50-ohms, the phase noise performance deteriorates by 10-15dB. This can be partially repaired by the inclusion of a DC-blocking capacitor; but again I think the best thing to do is to load it less heavily (see also above).?

Re: NC-40 Multiband??

The square wave output is derived from the sine output by a comparator
so it has both spurs that are present in the sine as well as jitter from?
comparator uncertainty.? It gets worse with increasing frequency.
Up to maybe 10mhz its not too terrible.? For 40M using 4.9152mhz
you need to hit 12mhz region.

The 9850 is easily a 35 year old part and the technology has moved
on.? To days radios even simple ones demand the AD9851 or newer.?
Even then 40mhz is definately the ceiling unless using the even
newer parts.

FYI the output from the SI5351 is remarkably cleaner and very
low jitter over a far greater span.? It can be programmed to cover
8000hz to something over 160 mhz.? and its generally cheaper.
It has three "oscillators" that can be programmed separately.
That and if needed about 10 DBm output.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

Do you have access to these files?

if yes

download them...?

because

I don't have access to those files when I sign into qrp-tech because..... it says I am not a member of that group.

Edited

I downloaded all the files yesterday. I will email them to you.

EDIT: Your Zed page has no email address. Shoot me an email if you still want the files, I have the Gerbers as well as all the documentation Chuck produced and more. I'm good at QRZ.

Thanks Bill!
I sent you a note...didn't realize at the time you're right across the river... :)

Re: Requested Files

Tom - I am late to this party. What you are looking for? If you need an NC40 board, I have an extra. I have to dig it up but that shouldn't be hard.? If you need the NC40A files, that is a little harder because Chuck (the mod-owner of that list) has forbidden anyone from moving them from the qrp-tech files area. Why don't you contact me off list and I will see if I can help you.? 73 Bill

Ok ...uh...anyone out there part of that group and in possession of the files? Or boards you want to part with? :)

Re: Requested Files

That is definitely the problem. You need to be a member of the group in order to see the files. Perhaps another member who is that a computer can copy it for you and put it here or else email it to you. I'm not at a computer or otherwise I would take care of it myself :-)

Re: Requested Files

Thanks men, but I'm not seeing any link.?
When I click this:?/g/qrp-tech/files/Winter%202018%20Project%20%231%20--%20%20NorCal40A%20qrp-tech%20PCB
it just takes me to the [email protected]?page. There is no zip file to download. And on that page it reminds me that my subscription has not been approved. Perhaps that is why no files link shows up. But as I said, no one seems to be monitoring that page for new members.?
It's a conundrum! lol...

Re: Requested Files

Tom, click on the link and download the zip file to get the gerbers.? There is a BOM file also.? While you are at it, download the whole directory.? Everything you will need is there.? Regards, Dale

Re: Requested Files

Tom,
The Gerbers are the second to last file. It's a ZIP file and usually you can just upload those to a PCB printer's website and they should load fine. Good luck!
