Re: Do you have a favorite home brew short wave receiver to build with scouts?
¿ªÔÆÌåÓýHello Rob and the group.I only had 2 experiences with receivers (or any electronics) with boy scouts.? Doug Hendricks and Norcal were kind enough to donate 20 kits for the Chuck Kitchen regen receiver that was in a 2000 QST (June I think).? That turned out to be a real disaster.? All of the scouts were new and pretty young.? That kit that Doug donated did not have a pc board.? That is what made it a disaster.? Have you ever tried to tell 20 kids to be gentle and go lightly with the CA glue?? It did not work!? All of them went through an entire bottle EACH and had it all over everything!? The kids for the most part did not care about the project except for 1 so it was just a time killer for them.? With that lesson I will say that if your group is new to electronics and the youngest bunch of scouts or at least pretty young kids mostly not even adolescents yet then any group activity should include a pc board.? Yes, that makes them board stuffers but your success rate goes up exponentially!? By the way Fred of FARR circuits fame did and does sell the pc board for that project. After that disaster I looked for something different.? Steve Weber (KD1JV) came to my aid and designed a short wave receiver for me and laid out a pc board.? He still has that receiver on his web site It is the "SWRX Short Wave AM Broadcast Receiver. Simple, inexpensive and effective" located at: If you read the article you will get a feel for things.? It is a direct conversion short wave receiver. U1 is critical and that means you could not just use any 74HC4046 as it seemed to have to be the RCA version (as I recall).? The other place that was a problem was that Steve had used a 3 position slide switch placed on the board.? The version on his page now does not use that type of switch but leaves that up to the builder to use something either off board or use jumpers for selecting the frequency of interest. After Steve laid out the boards Fred at FARR circuits donated the pc boards.? That project worked quite well.? The receiver is not the best and it is hard to tell where it is tuned sometimes but it worked and worked well enough that the kids were pleased as they actually got results. I am a bit biased though.? Since the pc board is available for the Kitchen regens or as a kit from QRPkits or at least in the past.? I started out playing with radio and SWL'ing using a regen.? It was a $25 Knight kit Span Master!? That was in 1963.? I logged 50 countries swl'ing.? Regens are not plug and play and for that reason I think it is a good choice as it takes the first step in teaching kids (or anyone for that matter) how to operate rather than being an appliance operator from the start.? Also the regen is actually not a bad receiver so it is worth consideration. Good luck. Jim Pruitt WA7DUY On 11/7/2019 1:43 PM, Rob via Groups.Io

Send in your QRP Pictures!
Hi everyone,
Right now the group's header image is just the default Groups.io image. I'd like to change that up! Send in your favorite picture of your QRP rig or QRP related activity. You can put it in the QRP Pictures folder in the Files section or add it as an attachment here. Once I have a few I'll make a collage of them and make that the header. Thanks! -- Ryan Flowers W7RLF

Re: Advertising kits for sale OT
Newt,
Don't know why selling QRP kits and associated equipment would be off topic. I've sold a bought several from qrp-tech and QRP-L over the years. I?€?ve stumbled across a few QRP related kits I purchased over the past 10 years and would like to find a good home for them. Glad to join to new "old qrptech"
?Many thanks Ryan for invitation to join to the new Group. I have joint to the former group when NC40A became the club project. I finished my NC40A after I made my own PCB, VFO with? SI5351 and oled display. Good small radio! I hope in future in the new Group new interesting projects will appear.

Hey Mike, This isn't a power play or anything like that. I'm sorry if I offended you or anyone else. I'm working on a good solution and want folks to enjoy the group for what it is.? Ryan Flowers On Thu, Nov 7, 2019 at 9:35 AM N8DAH <Dherron@...> wrote:

Re: Are you serious?
Mike, ?I asked him to lock it, since I started the thread and I thought that all that needed to be said was said I didn't feel that was a tall request or one that would bring ire. I, and I'm sure many others want to start here fresh with none of the drama that may have taken place on the other group. Don't blame Ryan, I have known him and talked with him over the last few years he is good people. ?73 David ? |
Re: NC40A files
This is definitely a hot topic! I've mentioned that I am trying to come up with a solution. What others do with the files is up to them and I won't condone or disparage anyone for doing their own thing. But, I'm locking this topic just because of how heated it is. I'm not a strict moderator- I just think it's in the best interest to stop things here while I work on a solution.?
Thanks for understanding! --
