The TI chip was test of a video amplifier.? It was not a drop in replacement. The point, I think, is that we have to find someone who has experimented with them to point out pros and cons.? And that was some time ago and better chips should be available and maybe cheaper. I'm a fan of a transistor, jfet or darlington pair replacement, if possible. The RF range is well within the transistor limits.? It's just a matter of finding the necessary gain in the circuit. I was going to use the same RF PA transistor that Diz, W8DIZ <sk>, used in the 1W and 5W series.? I have some in stock to play with when I get to the build.? The PCB has the layout already in place. I also spent $11.99 USD on Eliexpress to get a container of 840 transistors from audio to RF frequencies to run tests on.? Film at 11. Remember Spock from Star Trek?? You remember his famous hand signal? It meant "Don't mess with super glue.". chuck On 3/16/25 19:34, Daniel KK4MRN via groups.io wrote:

Chuck,
About the headers - yeah, I like the idea of using an IC socket and headers than doing dead bug style.? Good idea here.
?
And I want to build a SST-20.? Is the Video Op Amp TI TL592P a drop-in replacement?? or is there some re-design changes that need to be made like you suggested in your earlier Manhattan message?
?
As for the superglue, I think that is why I did better at the beginning with my first project with Manhattan Construction - a G3UUR crystal tester - because I used Gorilla glue but later switched to some off brand of superglue for other projects which was runny and took longer to dry.? That cheap stuff is where I had to learn how to use oil - well, I swiped some of my wife's olive oil - and put it on my fingers and desk - and let sit there... and working my fingers...? it does not work in a hurry... but it eventually works... and you have to keep moving it around... it works slowly.

WWV receiver
Here is a beginner project.
You remember the VE3DNL WWV receiver standard.? Found schematic online in a search for something else a few minutes ago. I know that some one (Nick?) did an improvement back in the day. My photo of the build attached with schematic.? Thanks Glen, VE3DNL, for the work back in the days of old. For calibration of generators and frequency counters (the trusty FCC-1), I use a GPSDO (GPS disciplined oscillator) that has warmed up a few hours. Cost under $100 on ebay and other places.? Aliexpress $67.74 USA vendor with 4.8+ rating and free shipping, but that is one that looked interesting. I'm sure some one here has splurged. chuck, aa7fo |
Mad Hatters
Builders using Manhattan Construction (a.k.a Mad Hatters),
1.? I use 2.54mm male and female headers for several purposes. See ebay and sort by price+shipping and search for the number you need.? 40pin single row is what I get and cut to the number of pins needed.? Using a PCB flush cutter, sacrifice on hole on the female strip by cutting dead center.? The male strip has notch between pins. Image 2156.jpg shows using male headers for IC socket super glued to PCB. Note, plastic melts when heated, especially the nylon strip holding the male pins. 2.? Image 3444.jpg shows header in center laying flat to plug in different band toroid for a regen receiver.? Somewhere, outside the 4000+ images I current have in one directory, is an image of the module in place.? This is a muppet board. For those interested in doing the SST-40 or SST-20, see Dave, AA7EE, web page. You can't do any better than that.? But it is a great build and a great project. The problem is the LT1252 being obsolete and astronomical in price for the PTH part.? I did an experiment with a TI TL592P, PTH part, 50MHz differential video amplifier with adjustable gain some time ago.? 2659.jpg for the muppet board.? Notes somewhere, but the part is $9 for 3 on ebay that I found. I think that a search for video op amps will do the trick to replace the part cheaply. Some one sent me, I think off line, a schematic for an SST with the IC replaced. I have had that schematic for a long time and built one.? 1540.jpg is start and the rest is off on a DVD, if someone is interested.? I also did a muppet board, the largest one I've ever done. Point:? The ADC transceiver.? I'm thinking of using the 2.54mm headers to build sections as modules and connect them neatly. Kindergarten training of keeping things inside the lines behaviour.? This allows for testing of modules as I build them and possible improvements with tests and any updates you guys and girls find or develop.? I'll also build the PCB version before letting the Gerbers loose.? atx-40m.jpg board. I did buy two bottles of super glue at Home Depot.? One loctite and one gorilla. The gorilla sets in 10 sec, the loctite a little longer.? There is a use for both set times, I think. FYI chuck, aa7fo, the one who photographs work for no known reason, except to justify having a digital camera |
Re: SST-20 from Wayne Burdick, N6KR - Manhattan Circuit Construction Madness Project
Hmmmm
Once I find a schematic on the internet or some publication, it's fair game for me to replicate it
in whole or part.? Period.? Take a look at my QRZ page and see all those stolen designs!? ?Heck I
even have Rick Campbell's and Roy Lewallen's autographs on a couple of purloined schematics.?
Says Rick, ".....I'm honored that you built this....".
?
That said, republishing and assembling kits for a group build might be different...but if that schematic shows
up in the wild west of the internet, I can build it, in whole or part, using my own construction methods.
?
Furthermore, I can change/alter/modify any found design to suit my hearts content.? Another word for that:
"home-brewing".

Re: SST-20 from Wayne Burdick, N6KR - Manhattan Circuit Construction Madness Project
Jerry,
Chuck wants to get permission because the SST-20 is copyrighted - the radio design - manual - schematic. So, out of respect for Wayne - both were originally part of NorCal Club. So, whatever the updated design they come up with, they want to get permission to post the design on the web.? When I say "they", I am talking about Chuck and anybody else that helps redesign the SST-20 to use a different op-amp.
?
Never know, Chuck may even want to do something like he did for the NorCal 40A 25th anniversary and create Gerbers for a PCB.? But i doubtful on that since his post was about Manhattan Construction.?? Manhattan Construction or even point-to-point construction really causes you to think about wiring up your components compared to plugging your parts in a PCB.?? I think it was Ashhar Farhan who said something you do not really learn much by stuffing a board in a kit, but you do by home brewing, ugly construction or Manhattan construction or point-to-point construction.? Maybe not the exact words. I maybe even got the attribution to the wrong person and I do apologize for that.? But the point is the same.
?
Remember, nobody likes their work stolen or taken without permission.? And many people on the web seem to think every document on the web is a free for all.? Just like when software has an open source license - they think it simply means - free for all - it does not mean that.
?
Just be respectful to the people who spent many hours or months or years designing or redesigning the SST-20 or NorCal 40A 25th Anniversary Edition or the documentation? videos showing how to build these radios.? Some people were very disrespectful and created kits and said they were not kits of this radio on ebay.? Included videos on a DVD of someone showing how to build this radio.? Included documentation on how to build this radio.?? And course, did all of this without permission ignoring any copyrights - disrespecting the people who redesigned the NorCal 40A for the 25th anniversary to fit on a 100mm x 100mm pcb to take advantage of thos pcb specials like jlcpcb.? Take videos and documentation too without permission and selling it.?
?
All disrespectful.
?
This is why Chuck is doing this - he wants to be respectful to Wayne Burdick - and so do others on the QRPTech group.

SST-20 from Wayne Burdick, N6KR - Manhattan Circuit Construction Madness Project
Hello gang,
I was talking to a mentor (Elmer) that I have been talked to many times in the past.? Well, there are many Elmers on this group because this group is a goldmine of great projects and advice.? Anyways, he suggested that the 2N2/40+ might be too complex for me which I had a feeling it was.? This is why the 2N2/XX was way down on my bucket list.? However, he did say when I do build a 2N2/XX, that I should build the original 2N2/40 from that QRPp article using Manhattan Construction and use all discrete parts like it suggests.
?
The mentor suggested I try with an easier radio to build as a Manhattan Construction - SST-20 which is mentioned in a message by Chuck Adams aa7fo:
?
Chuck also mentioned a need to replace the Op Amp.? And get permission from the author.
?
If Chuck or someone knows more about this SST-20 or knows where some manual, schematic is for it, please let us know.? I try not to step on Chuck's toes here.? I just realized I needed to start on a project for my level of experience.

Re: 2N2/40+ Transceiver
Alan - I also built Jim's Manhattan Islander amp. I built it specifically to fit inside my Fort Tuthill 80, as that rig will only drive headphones. Unfortunately, I wasn't getting good fidelity from it, but I think that had more to do with how I was interfacing the Tut80 output with the input of Jim's amp. I'm keeping it in a box on the shelf, waiting for that moment when I need a neat little discrete audio amp. Oh, and Howard - it uses the same Radio Shack output transformer that you just found! I bought two of them when RS was going out of business, thinking that they might come in handy one day. I do have some misgivings about using one in my (hopefully) upcoming 2N2 build though. I don't know exactly why, but it's smaller and less physically substantial than the one used in the 2N2 kit. I've long felt a bit unsure about the quality of some of the parts from RS, though I don't know how warranted that is. I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm just being a worry wart.
?
Here are a few quick shots of my little K8IQY amp, using the RS output transformer.

Re: 2N2/40+ Transceiver
Howard - that 2N2 group is intended mainly for discussion of the Norcal 2N2/XX kit. It would be great if there was a discussion group for 2N2 scratch builds but that doesn't seem to be the case. I doubt there would be enough interested people to make it a viable group.

Re: 2N2/40+ Transceiver
By the way, there is a 2N2 discussion group on Groups.IO.? I posted a question regarding modification of a 600:600 transformer for use in the 2N2 output section.? I no longer need one but others might consider and comment.? ? I would guess that most folks there are also on this group, anyway.? Howard, n3fel |

G3URR crystal measurement method Mike, In one of his more recent postings to his website (~last two or three years), W7ZOI changed the oscillator's emitter resistor from 1K to 3k3 to reduce drive to the crystal under test and noted more stable readings when doing the measurements. Sources of QRP Homebrew Supplies
/g/qrptech/wiki/23197S ?
If a link is dead, update the link and mark it as dead. maybe the page is down. or the business is gone.? sometimes websites have redesign so old links no longer work.
And let us know if you find fakes or counterfeits or the parts turn out to be good.
Or you have good parts from an ebay seller - maybe not in the wiki, but at least in an email.
?
As a homebrewer or qrp radio builder, we have to source our parts, so knowing where to get good parts is important - and knowing where to stay away from too.

A recent link I updated was Surplus Sales of Nebraska. Their old default link no longer worked but I discovered their correct default link.
