Re: NP0 Capacitors for QRP homebrew
I wouldn't trust the "Hilitich" kit, or whatever that is. I buy mostly monolythic ceramic caps, Class 1 NP0/C0G temp coefficient for VFO and filter use, and Class 2 X7R monolythics for bypass and general purpose. No Class 2 Z5U or Y5V caps in my homebrew stuff. See wikipedia.org/wiki/Ceramic_capacitor
For Colpitts VFOs and audio precision caps (like? some 2,000 pF polystyrenes in the frequency circuits of my build of the ARRL Two-Tone Generator for SSB testing), relatively high capacitance polystyrene caps are very good. They are very temperature-stable. I have a bunch of low value ones as well. For repair of tube stuff, ceramic disc NP0 or another appropriate temperature coefficient. Have to watch the voltage ratings on those. I have a bunch of low and relatively high values of classic ceramic disk NP0s, 1 pF and above. Ted, KX4OM |
Re: NP0 Capacitors for QRP homebrew
It's likely that the low value capacitors (under 1nF) actually are NP0 capacitors, because most ceramic caps in those values are. But the kit doesn't specify it so I would be wary. On Tue, Nov 19, 2019 at 11:24 PM Steve Ratzlaff <ratzlaffsteve@...> wrote:

Re: NP0 Capacitors for QRP homebrew
Ryan,
Caveat: I have not purchased much from Mouser or similar houses. Do not know what the state of your junk box is, but don't panic and worry about "kits" -- unless someone points out a great option. You will find that the "junk" will pile up over time and you will have parts coming out your ears. While I used to scrounge at the local swap meets here in SoCal, that has faded.? What I also did was order more than needed when I was building. For example, if 3 or 4 values were needed, I would order 10 or so of each or a price break quantity so there would be some left over. Also, even if you went to Diz and "ran the table" (i.e., bought all of his values) it would set you back $40 or so. It's a lot but you'd be pretty much set. But by amping the quantities of the values you need for one project after another, you will tend to build up the most common values over time. I am not to sanguine on the quality of the eBay parts, but they are similarly priced for lots of 25. However, I trust Diz's stuff because he specializes in QRP, they get to you in less than a week, and he is a great guy to boot. Good luck. And now you all know how ignorant I am! LOL. Does anyone know of such a kit but with NP0 caps instead? I searched around and didn't find anything. How do you all go about buying them for your own projects? On Tue, Nov 19, 2019 at 8:24 PM Steve Ratzlaff <ratzlaffsteve@...> wrote:

NP0 Capacitors for QRP homebrew
Hey everyone,
This winter I'd like to do some homebrewing and will need NP0 capacitors- I don't have any right now! What do you think of this kit?? 23 values, 30 each (60 for the 0.1pf/100nf) and it seems like a reasonable selection. I have Amazon $$ to spend and so that's why I'm focused on using them as a vendor. If anybody has other suggestions, I'm all ears. Thanks :)? -- Ryan Flowers W7RLF

Re: QRPp back issuesP
Jim,
Thank you for keeping this up! You are one of the true gentlemen of amateur radio. Your 2N2-40 was a true classic and ever since I saw it that one year we met at Pacificon, it was my dream to build one "au natural" and it is in my sights for 2020. I would only add -- for emphasis -- to all those who wish to do the same that Jim has corrections to the Paul Harden QRPp issue in his documentation set. Again, my thanks, Jim -- William, k6whp -------------------- "Cheer up, things could get worse. So I cheered up and things got worse." |

Re: PCBs for NorCal 2N2/XX Rig
I must of read that issue 10 times, and I still keep it within easy reach. Retirement is around the corner, and this is near the top of my list of projects... thanks william for the reminder. And I know Paul is still around. I remember camping on blm land between Magdelena, and the VLA and looking down on it and thinking of him. Great memories.

Re: PCBs for NorCal 2N2/XX Rig
As per usual, Jim is a true gentleman and has made some very valid points. The 2N2XX is an order of magnitude more complex than -- say -- the NorCal 40A or SW-XX+ and certainly sports some esoteric parts.?
That said, the Winter edition of the 1998 QRPp publication (NorCal QRP) was devoted to building the Jim Kortge 2N2-40 original. It was done by Paul Harden, NA5N, sporting his marvelous hand illustrations. This was a stage-by-stage/circuit-by-circuit pictorial and text manual on how to recreate Jim's wonderful Manhattan construction masterpiece along with notes. Also, around that time, the Arizona Scorpions offered a PCB with the outline of the circuit and marks where the pads should be placed. It might be a way forward for those wishing to relive history. (It's on my bucket list despite the overbearing temptation to stuff through-hole parts, apply juice, and get on the air.) Of course, in order to "distribute" these, permission must be asked of Jim, Paul, Doug Hendricks, et al. However, Jim has left up his site with a description of his original rig and updated documentation. At the risk of being overly-maudlin, I had the pleasure of meeting with and talking to Jim at a Pacificon back in the days of yore.To boot, I saw firsthand his marvelous little radio -- meticulously constructed -- and that set the hook, so to speak. Thank you, Ryan
Particularly for re-opening this venue and for your efforts (now and in the future) for re-enabling this forum. As with others, I had files uploaded and wished to be able to view/download the considerably fine work of fellow QRPers -- and I appreciate your efforts to regain this data.
