?? FS: PALM RADIO paddle & straight key
Groups, I'm selling my Palm Radio paddle key and straight key. Both are in good condition. They were used on a few stealth QRP hotel stays, and then retired. Palm Radio in Germany (Dieter Engels, DJ6TE) closed shop in 2018, so these are rare....I even saw a guy on e-pay trying to sell one for $750! I'm asking $120 for both, which includes the cost of shipping to a USA address. Terms: Paypal Family & Friends or personal check. Pre-owned, no returns. Thanks & 73, Jay W6CJ

Black Widow antenna instructions
2
Does anyone have the full instructions to the Black Widow vertical antenna that was designed and sold by Ed Breneiser WA3WSJ? So far the Wayback Machine only has snippets of it. Eds stuff has been pulled down sadly. I am trying to relive yesteryear with a build and use like I did back in the old mobile home cottage we had back then. Just for fun. Dave K8WPE

Collapsible Whips - was AX-1
I changed the subject to make this a bit easier to follow. I got the whip for 10-40 m operation ...............................It's even taller than Dan -) https://www.alphaantenna.com/product/alpha-ss34-foot-stainless-steel-whip/ Alpha makes a 34' 6" whip (10.5 m for those of the Metric Persuasion) that collapses to ~30 inches (0.75 m). I own one, and it is solidly built. Alpha recommends guying at the 17 foot (~5 m) level, but they have the guy attachments built in to the whip. 1/4 wave at 40 m is pretty good. Of course, Alpha has all sorts of mounting and matching options. Is it heavy? Well, it is a bit heavier than the 17 and 25 foot whips, but it weighs 3 lbs versus say 2 lbs for the other shorter whips. This is a new product for them, and I am already a fan. The price is a little more than the shorter whips but is reasonable for what you receive. 73 de Lee KX4TT

KX2 vs IC705
22
I¡¯m looking to purchase my next QRP radio. I¡¯m primarily a CW op, with some SSB from time to time. It¡¯s going to be a POTA/SOTA radio, but I also wanna be able to operate from the beach, hotel balcony, etc when traveling. I¡¯ve looked at both. Budget allows for both. If I get the KX2, I¡¯m getting the AX1 antenna with it as well. Which would you all recommend?
|
AX1
Changed the subject ¡ Thanks Howie. I already have your very well made clamp and use it when appropriate. If I¡¯m doing SOTA on a sparse summit or POTA where no suitable tables, benches etc are available I use the tripod . I have a small 3 legged camp stool to sit on-too old to be scrambling around on the ground! My tripod is actually an aluminum light stand with very nice wider legs so much more stable than a standard camera tripod. Plus it¡¯s very lightweight. At 5 feet plus it allows me to elevate and angle the radials at 45 degrees and anchor with alligator clips. Also serves as guys. So far (6-7 years) no tip over¡I don¡¯t do ¡®parking¡¯ lots on the air¡¯ unless weather is really nasty. Hiking is my preference although at 73 not like years ago! Just to add-your products are very well made and I use the power supply regularly. Dan Presley 503-701-3871 danpresley@me. com N7CQR@... It needs to be a use case decision made after you've familiarized yourself with the capabilities of both radios - I've never been conscious of a performance difference, except for the absence of a tuner in one, and the missing bands in the other. But a couple comments. First, I routinely run my KX2 handheld with a 7 foot whip on a little 3/8-24 bracket. The simply magical KX2 tuner usually tunes this below 2:1 up thru 17 meters, and most of the time less than 2:1 on 20 meters, both with a resonant radial and a trailing wire. If you do the math a 7 foot whip is pretty cheap and going to be quite a bit more efficient than a 4 footer, so it's worth a thought. Second, I'm not sure of the knock on blowing dust and the touch screen on the 705. I routinely run the 705 from the beach at ZF and in the Rockies. I've not had a problem other than times when the touch screen apparently is unhappy (read finicky) from static charge (I think) from the little rocky bits, but that cleans off well enough. I may be tempting fate operating that way but at some point you have to decide what risks you're willing to take to have fun :) And third, while I can't dispute the KX2 tuner as the undeniable king of tuners, it is surprising how fast you can adapt to running a radio without a tuner. EFHWs work well, and a slider coil vertical like the MFJ 1898 make the lack of a tuner less of a problem most days than you might think. YMMV. You can't go wrong either way. 72 Scott ka9p On Sun, Mar 23, 2025 at 2:09 PM Dan N7CQR via groups.io <n7cqr@...> wrote: ?A couple of comments here. First I believe his two choices are KX2 (not KX3) and 705. If you¡¯re primarily using it for CW the KX2 is a much better radio in functionality and performance. Better filtering particularly the APF and CW spot features and QSK for starters. Plus the fact that you can have the internal battery and ATU is a big factor in size, weight and having everything integrated in a small package. Some overlooked features include the ability to have the radio record (on screen-not audio) your CW activity for logging is very useful. It time stamps each contact. Plus should you ever try RTTY or PSK31 you can operate these modes just using your CW key. Also you can mount some keys directly to the front of the radio for even more convenience and use ability. I can do a SOTA/POTA activation and just balance the rig on my knee if needed and fire away. The AX1 works great with the KX2 for a low profile setup. In regards to using the AX1 here¡¯s more information. Someone asked about using a small tripod to mount the AX1 ,and here¡¯s some information. But I¡¯ve also used it directly mounted to the KX2 with good results. Just make sure you have the counterpoise deployed correctly. I¡¯ve never failed to have the KX2 (or KX1,3 or K2) resonate the AX1 very quickly. I use a tripod to improve the efficiency of the AX1. Serves two purposes-gets it up higher in the air,and I use 3 13¡¯ radials angled at 45 degrees. There¡¯s been extensive research on using this technique for re

It uses fixed capacitors that are switched rather than the more typical polyvaricon variable capacitors. it is modeled after a VK3YE, Peter Parker, tuner. Ernie has a new callsign NE3TE . He picked it because it has a very low CW call weight. Jerry long time QRPer and is into building more than operating. He is building a beacon monitor out of an old military rig. Ed showed how the NCDXF/IARU beacon project works. https://www.ncdxf.org/beacon/index.html. He recently work some rare DX while operating POTA. Ernie and Pete are discussing the PERformer vertical antenna which use elevated radials. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wqw3ultuPQg Stuart is working on a Michigan Mighty Mite. He wanted to know what would be a good receiver to go along with it Ed suggested a MRX-40 Mini receiver. https://www.arrl.org/files/file/Technology/pdf/99759.pdf Scott has a HB receiver based on the Tayloe detector that he thinks would be good. It is Ernie¡¯s birthday today. FS: MTR 4Bv2.3

My MTR 4Bv2 is for sale. It first went on the air in late 2023, and was only used indoors. It's in good condition and includes powerpole DC cord, cheater sticker and instructions. I like the quiet receiver, 600-hz center, readable display and 80-meter capability. For those unfamiliar with this radio, it works great with high-sensitivity earbuds or ear speakers that have a built-in volume control. TX & RX working great on all bands. I've seen used ones going for $400-$470. I'm asking $330 - cash. Local pickup only, nearby Pasadena, CA Please send me an email or PM if interested. Thanks & 73 Jay W6CJ

QRP-ARCI Spring QSO Party
Save the date! It's not too early to plan to carve out some time for yourself during the weekend of April 12th. That's the date of the QRP-ARCI Spring QSO Party! It's a 6 hour Sprint, that begins at 0000 UTC Saturday morning on April 12th (that would be Friday evening April 11th here in the USA). Of course, put in whatever time you can, but please make an effort to get on the air and participate, even if it's just for a little while! Last year in 2024, we had 16 QRPers send in a log to the Autolog at https://www.qrpcontest.com/qrparci_spring/ You do NOT have to be a member of QRP-ARCI to participate, but keep in mind that QRP-ARCI literally has thousands of members - certainly we can easily surpass the number of 2024 entries with ease! As an added bonus we're at the top of Cycle 25! So if you're a regular participant, thanks so much and join us again! If you haven't been in a QRP-ARCI Sprint in a while (or ever!), dust off that rig, fire it up and join in on the fun! Rumor has it that certificates may be in the offering for the top scorers! 72 de Larry W2LJ - QRP-ARCI Contest Manager
