Re: Aluminum Enclosures by K7QO

I use this method to download YT videos from the command line using Unix. It allows you to select the video resolution you want to use.

Note:
When you run this command: youtube-dl -F <video_url> you may see filenames that say video only. You do not want those. It means exactly what it says, the video is there without audio.

Remember when we used to have to fight for our bands? Probably couldn't give it away now. Between satellites and the internet, even 40m broadcasters seem to have largely given up HF.

Re: Parking Spaces

Hello Jack,

This is QRP. Even with 99 watts (also QRP) it often takes more than three times. A member of my club (now SK) set his computer keyer to call CQ over and over and over with appropriate pauses while he worked on other things. If/when he got a reply he jumped in for the QSO. I am thinking of putting my antique Raspberry PI (original model) to work doing just that. Just a suggestion.

This was brought up yesterday at the club's annual picnic. I don't think you were there but the exact same thing was said :)

Looking for 15 MHz Crystals

w8diz

Hi All,

I am looking for several hundred 15 MHz crystals that are full size HC49 and Parallel Resonant, 18, 20pf or whatever.

All I can find are series resonant crystals in full size HC49 cans.

Other that to order custom crystals from China of wherever, anybody know of a source?

I need them to create a 5Watter for the old novice section of the 40 meter CW band.

4SQRP SSS tonight! (Re: Parking Spaces)

How about getting on the air this evening for an hour or two? The 4 State QRP Group's Second Sunday Sprint is tonight :-)

I think you've got time to register (free!) for membership in 4SQRP and receive a member number for the exchange. (Not required, as you can send power level if you don't have a member number yet.)

72,
Jeff N0?MII

Second Sunday Sprint -
Occurs on the second Sunday of each month, 7 to 9 PM Central
Any mode, any band (except WARC & 60 mtrs) -

Suggested frequencies: standard calling freq. plus 7122 and 3564 (CW), and 3985, 7285, and 14285 (SB).
as well as the usual QRP watering holes.
QSO's with the same station on different bands are allowed. CW and SB portions of a band count as two bands.
Calling CQ is suggested to be "CQ 4S"
Exchange is "RST, SPC, member number (power if non-member)"
5 Watts max CW, 10 Watts PEP max SB.
The station with the most contacts each month will be emailed a certificate. Furthermore, the top three stations with the most SSS contacts during the year will also receive certificates via email.
Scores are submitted via the qrpcontest.com/4sqrp <> website (compliments of W8DIZ).
For full details, please download the complete rules (PDF) here <>.
For questions, please contact John (AA0VE): SecondSundaySprint@... <mailto:SecondSundaySprint@4sqrp/com?Subject=Second%20Sunday%20Sprint%20Question>

And when you do call CQ no one comes back! They are all on digital modes now. Try listening to the old Novice band from 7.100 to 7.125. At night you used to hear a few tubers in QSO now the digital guys are moving up from 7.070 above 7.100.

Re: Aluminum Enclosures by K7QO

Greetings,

I would just like to remind everyone that Chuck, K7QO asked me to
point everyone to the 12" bench shear on Amazon and the 18" bench
brake at Harbor Freight, both of which are featured in the video that
was deleted, then reposted on YouTube (Thank you Chuck!). When I
ordered mine, there were nine left in stock, and the last time I
looked, there were seven left in stock. KAKA Industries 12" bench
shear for $135 and Free Shipping! The exact same shear on the KAKA
website is about $270. So I don't know what the deal is at Amazon?

Anyway, when I went to Jr. High School and High School, there were
classes called 'Shop'. When I was 13 years old, I built my first
Crystal Set in Shop Class. I learned how to layout and work with sheet
metal. In high school I cast my first aluminum in a simple cope and
drag green sand mold. Later, in Vo-Tech school, I learned how to weld,
and operate machine tools such as lathes and milling machines. In
University, I learned how to build and fire Ceramic Kilns, mix clay
bodies, mix glazes, operate a pug mill, and so much more. After I got
my BA in Art, I buyilt and operated my own small art bronze foundry.
I've even worked in a commercial foundry as a molder/founder. making
Hot Rod parts. I would make PetroBond sand molds in the morning, take
lunch, then melt and pour a fancy Aluminum alloy in the afternoon (#70
crucible fired with diesel fuel and degassed with pure Argon).

With a bench shear and a bench brake, there are no batteries required.
No rolls of plastic filament are needed. No microcontrollers or servo
motors. The software required is your brain, plus some muscle. The
shear does NOT have a meat sensor, so keep your fingers away from the
blade. Chuck suggests wearing gloves when working with sheet metal.
Probably some safety goggles too?

How many of you already have a bench sheer and a bench brake, and are
making your own enclosures? How is it working out for you? Got any
tips and tricks to share?

Re: 1993 [OT]

Hey Chuck. Probably never been easier to homebrew a GC receiver.

I used a Raduino clone to build a receiver using Farhans uBITX architecture and some classic W7ZOI stuff, add the KD8CEC software and a small TFT and it¡¯s lots of fun to use.

And it¡¯s pretty easy to build a single conversion high side GC front end using a QRP Labs vfo, a homebrew DBM, and the AA3SJ double tuned 3-30 MHz circuit. And Diz¡¯s 2n5109 amp makes a great preamp to stick behind the AA3SJ with a built in attenuator pad on his board. You can just build that front end to output into any other receiver you have, or build a back end to your liking- the QRO Labs vfo has programmable offset to accommodate anything you want to do.

It¡¯s a great time to be building GC receivers.
