Re: Preliminary results -- W8TEE/AC8GY Mag Loop Testing

Hello Jack,

Thanks. I found references to those and intend to follow up. That is part of the "way forward" I mentioned. Once upon a time, before there was an IBM PC or Apple at my house I started to wade into programming. The programs I could buy did what somebody else wanted to do and do it the way they wanted to do it. I started building my own databases. Before very long I found "user configurable" software and dropped the programming effort. What I learned in those days barely applies today.

'They' like to say "they don't build things like they used to". Generally that is a lament. I say thank GOD! <evil grin>

Now Ozarkon is on my bucket list..... may try to make it part of a visit to Oklahoma City and visit to relatives. See you next year. The two new hams I took with me this year are infected and getting ready to take other friends to FDIM and Dayton next year. Those that don¡¯t want FDIM can do Contest University.

Re: AZ ScQRPions Meeting, Prescott Hamfest this Saturday.

Bob et al,

I will be going to Prescott early Sat a.m.? Then I'll be going over to the

school just off of Fain Rd and N Robert Rd to see an old group that I

used to fly R/C gliders with and will be starting back up when I get back

from Dallas the weekend of Ham-Com in Plano.

If it is lunch time, I may just visit the Fuddrucker's near the movie theatre

in Prescott Valley.

See you tomorrow,

If any of you all are there, look for me ( brown wide-brim leather hat with mesh sides and grey shoulder bag). Perhaps we can arrange a hamfest section of our monthly lunch. :- )

first trial, backyard, 12V supply to my ATS4A, EFHW sloping upward to about 25-30' at the far end.

Re: Preliminary results -- W8TEE/AC8GY Mag Loop Testing

We agree. The question we're trying to answer is: How much are we giving up with a ML verses an EFHW (or other) antenna? If we get the time, we might also test against a vertical, too. Any ML is a compromise--I think we all know that. However, do the physical design variations possible for a ML significantly alter its relative performance? Since I used to teach graduate-level stats courses, I'm always bothered by non-quantitative statements like "it performs better" than such-and-such. I much prefer something like "The mag loop gives up 2db (+/- 1.96¦Ò) over a reference dipole." That statement conveys much more information about the test being made. We made a post yesterday about the relative efficiency of the ML and there's a significant hit on 40M, but less on 20M. Part of the question is: Can I afford to take that hit?

To us, the question sometimes boils down to: Which is better for my hobby when constrained with an HOA agreement: 1) a mag loop, or 2) finding a new hobby.

Glad you got it tuned. Tuning a multi-band antenna always takes some work and piddling around. That SWR will get you out fine.
