K4BAI Preliminary Log 80M Fox Hunt 2/14/25
Here is the preliminary log from last night's 80M QRP Fox Hunt. Please advise of any transcription errors before Monday morning. I will then post the final log. I was on 3556.5 kHz listening up until the pile up died down and I started listening simplex at 0256Z. Total of 61 hounds and the two foxes for a score of 63. Apologies to any I may have not been able to copy, including K0DTJ and two other CA hounds that I now know were calling. Equipment was TS590SG at 5W to 125' zepp in inverted vee configuration with the top at about 35' through a Palstar antenna tuner. Best DX were K6XR in CA and K7GO in MT. 73/72, John, K4BAI. 0202 N8SS 559 MI EARL 5W 0203 WB9HFK 579 IL MARK 5W 0204 K4PQC 579 GA PHIL 5W 0204 KK4BNC 599 GA RANDY 5W 0205 WD4CFN 579 TN STEVE 5W 0205 K9CW 599 IL DREW 5W 0206 K2TW 579 VA TOM 5W 0207 W5AJD 559 LA JERRY 5W 0207 AK1P 599 FL PAUL 5W 0208 N9NE 559 WI TODD 5W 0209 ND4U 559 TN DEN 5W 0209 N2RK 599 NY JACK 5W 0210 N0YJ 579 KS BERT 5W 0211 AC0BQ 559 KS JOHN 5W 0212 N9WKE 559 IL BRUCE 5W 0213 W9XU 559 WI LON 5W 0213 W1FMR 599 FL JIM 5W 0214 K4EES 599 AL KEN 5W 0214 NO2D 599 CO PETER 5W 0215 N4MJ 559 TN GLENN 5W 0215 ND4K 599 GA MAC 5W 0216 W2SH 589 NJ CHAS 5W 0217 KK4E 599 GA DON 5W 0218 KK5LD 559 TX DAN 5W 0218 N4KV 599 AL JOHN 5W 0219 KR0U 559 CO TIM 5W 0220 KG5UK 559 OK BRAD 5W 0220 N2TNN 559 VA DEAN 5W 0221 K2SJB 559 NY DAVE 5W 0223 WA9CW 599 WI TOM 5W 0223 K9IUA 559 IA KEVIN 5W 0224 K0LOA 559 TX DWAIN 5W 0226 W9OD 559 WI CRAIG 5W 0226 N1IX 559 NH DAVE 5W 0227 W4CNG 559 TN CATHY 5W 0228 KQ0E 559 TX RON 5W 0229 AK3X 569 MD PETER 5W 0232 NK9G 559 WI RICK 5W 0233 W1XV 599 NH BRAD 5W 0235 WC7S 599 WY DALE 5W 0236 K3PH 559 PA BOB 5W 0237 K4QPL 599 NC JIM 5W 0239 KZ5J 599 TX PAT 5W 0240 WA4ZOF 599 GA TOM 5W 0241 NC4RT/P 599 NC RANDY 5W 0242 NN4K 599 GA MAC 5W 0243 K9DRP 579 IN DON 5W 0244 WQ0N 559 MN RUSS 5W 0245 KW4NJA 599 GA SCOTT 5W 0247 K7GO 559 MT LEW 5W 0250 KC1FB 559 CT JIM 5W 0252 KT0AA 559 MO TONY 5W 0258 KF4LMZ 559 SC PAT 5W 0259 KO4VW 559 GA STEVE 5W 0308 KR2Q 579 NJ DOUG 5W 0310 WO9B 559 WI MIKE 5W 0311 NX1K 559 MA MARK 5W 0314 K9TA 559 IN STEVE 5W 0323 K6XR 559 CA MAC 5W 0325 N4GG 579 GA HAL 5W 0327 K3UT 599 GA PHIL 5W 0330 W2LJ FOX NJ LARRY 5W 0330 K4BAI FOX GA JOHN 5W

Yes, I do that. I also slow down for weaker and slower hounds when I'm the Fox. It often is faster to send slowly once than to send fast two, three, or more times!

Thanks to all the Hounds who worked me. Sorry to those who chased me. but I was not able to hear - and I know there were a few of you. I just couldn't dig you out. K Index was 4 last night and at times the QSB was rampant. QSB was giving me particular problems while working Don K9DRP. Thanks Don, for slowing down the code speed. Once you did that I was able to hear you just fine. BTW, that's something that Tim KR0U does, often. When you have 5 or 6 Hounds calling you at the same time, a slower speed call sign tends to stick out. Hint - hint ...... I'll have to remember that myself! If I made any transcription errors, please let me know via w2ljqrp@.... Initial Notes 80M Fox Hunt K4BAI/Fox 2/14/25
3
Hello all: I will post a copy of the log tomorrow (Friday) morning. Please let me know by the end of he weekend of any transcription errors and I will submit the final log Monday. Had been having trouble with the computer and N1MM+, but it ran OK for the 1300Z CWT today. However, tonight I couldn't get it to bring up N1MM+. I couldn't get it to go to the screen where the shut down or shut down and restart commands are. So, I had to power it down, which I don't like to do, but it did come back up OK. Only, it began to update! Took 25 minutes to update and I was considering logging on paper when it was finally ready and it brought up N1MM+. Just had time to start the K4OAQ map program and reconfigure N1MM+ commands before the fox hunt period started. I was all 90 minutes transmitting on 3556.5 kHz. At 0256, I could hear no more callers and went to simplex. I was still tuning up in case someone called up, but no one did. I did catch a GA hound calling simplex before I went simplex and worked him OK. Log shows 61 QSOs plus the two foxes for a score of 63. There was a lot of QRN from the storm front that just passed through here going south, but, in spite of the QRN, the band seemed pretty good. I had told the other fox, Larry, W2LJ, that we might work K7GO in Mt, but wouldn't have a chance at a CA hound this near the sunspot cycle high. CA is hard from the east coast 2XQRP even at the bottom of a cycle. But, to my amazement, I did have a QSO with Reggie (Mac) K6XR near the end of the hunt. Wow! Now if someone tells me that the Fritz map did show my QSOs tonight, it will have been a near perfect night. I hope I didn't miss anyone who could hear me and called. I did work a few new-to-me hounds and want to welcome them if they are subscribed to this reflector. Hope we all have fun and good luck in the ARRL DX Contest, CW, this weekend. I am expecting great band conditions! 73/72, John, K4BAI. TS590SG at 5W output. 125'center fed dipole in an inverted vee configuration with the center up about 35'.

80M QRP Fox Hunt Tonight Local Date
Hello all: The weekly 80M QRP Fox Hunt will be held tonight 0200 to 0330Z Friday. Two QRP foxes, W2LJ, LARRY, NJ and K4BAI, JOHN, GA will be calling CQ between 3550 and 3570 kHz. 5W maximum power for foxes and hounds. Exchange for each is : RST, SPC*, Name, Power. The two foxes will start off sending "UP" and if or when the pile up dies down, the foxes may stop sending "UP" and start listening only a few hundred Hz up from their transmit frequencies. Work only the two foxes and do not spot their frequencies. The foxes will promptly post their logs to the QRP fox hunt list. There is also a live map program from K4OAQ that will show the map location of QSOs of those foxes who log on to it. There are also 40M QRP Fox Hunts on Tuesday evenings local date at same times and the frequency range is 7030 to 7050 kHz. In the summers, there is a summer fox hunt schedule on 20M, 14050-14070. Anyone who can run QRP CW at 5W or below is welcome to join it. 73/72, John, K4BAI. *SPC means state, province, or DX country.

80 Meter Hunt tonight
Howdy Hounds! Yours truly, W2LJ will be lurking somewhere in the 80 Meter woods tonight, along with John K4BAI. Look for us both, one of us above 3.560 MHz, the other below. I will start off working split, and will send "UP" to make you aware of that. Please spread out a bit and don't bunch up. You stand a better chance of garnering a pelt that way. For the record, the rig will be my KX3, and the antennas are an EFRW, and a Butternut HF9V vertical. I switch between the two for optimal reception. Good luck and have fun - because that what this is really all about! 72 de Larry W2LJ QRP - When you care to send the very least!

W9CF fox report 40m Feb 12 UTC
4
Thanks everyone. I was a bit worried earlier with the K index at 3 and A at 24 that conditions would be more disturbed than they turned out. Conditions seemed, while not excellent, at least decent, and definitely better than my first run in November. I transmitted on 7034.64 for the whole hunt. At 0320 someone started CQing up 1 KHz from me. That was totally reasonable since I was getting few or no callers by then, and I switched to simplex. Here is my log. It looks like 66 QSOs, minus 3 dupes, plus 2 foxes give 65 total. 73 Kevin w9cf 0200 N9NE 559 WI TODD 5W 0201 K6XR 559 CA MAC 5W 0201 NO2D 599 CO PETER 5W 0202 WC7S 599 WY DALE 5W 0203 W6SIY 559 CA KEITH 5W 0203 N0YJ 559 KS BERT 5W 0204 K0DTJ 559 CA BRIAN 5W 0204 K9CW 579 IL DREW 5W 0205 KB5FCF 559 OK JOEL 4W 0206 WB5BKL 559 TX NICK 5W 0207 K9IUA 559 IA KEVIN 5W 0208 N5KIP 559 TX DICK 5W 0209 KZ5J 559 TX PAT 5W 0209 W9XU 559 WI LON 5W 0210 NK3H 599 AZ MITCH 5W 0211 KK5LD 599 TX DAN 5W 0211 W9OD 559 WI CRAIG 5W 0212 K3UT 559 GA PHIL 5W 0213 K0LOA 559 TX DWAIN 5W 0213 AL7V 559 OK SAM 5W 0214 K6LEN 559 CA LEN 5W 0215 K6PJV 559 CA DALE 5W 0215 KR0U 559 CO TIM 5W 0216 WB8QZM 559 TX BRIAN 5W 0216 K6FA 559 CA DAVID 5W 0217 NK6A 599 CA DON 5W 0218 WX2S 559 NJ STEVE 5W 0219 KO4VW 559 GA STEVE 5W 0220 WB9HFK 559 IL MARK 5W 0220 WD4CFN 559 TN STEVE 5W 0222 W1FMR 559 FL JIM 5W 0222 K7GO 559 MT LEW 5W 0223 W5AJD 559 LA JERRY 5W 0224 KK4BNC 559 GA RANDY 5W 0226 AK1P 550 FL PAUL 5W 0227 WQ0N 559 MN RUSS 5W 0228 WA4ZOF 559 GA TOM 5W 0230 NN4K 559 GA MAC 5W 0231 N4KV 559 AL JOHN 5W 0232 N2TNN 559 VA DEAN 5W 0233 NK9G 599 WI RICK 5W 0234 W6ESE 559 CA KEN 5W 0234 KT0AA 559 MO TONY 5W 0238 K9TA 559 IN STEVE 5W 0239 N2RK 559 NY JACK 5W 0240 KK4BNC 559 GA RANDY 5W **DUPE** 0241 K2SJB 559 NY DAVE 5W 0242 N9WKE 559 IL BRUCE 5W 0243 K9DRP 579 IL DON 5W 0244 K4PQC 559 GA PHIL 5W 0246 N8SS 559 MI EARL 5W 0247 KI0RB 559 CO VINCE 5W 0249 N1IX 559 NH DAVE 5W 0250 W9OD 559 WI CRAIG 5W **DUPE** 0254 N4MJ 559 TN GLENN 5W 0254 ND4K 559 GA DAVE 5W 0259 NK2Y 559 NY JAY 5W 0300 AD6IU 559 CA DICK 5W 0304 K4BAI 559 GA JOHN 5W 0306 W4CMG 559 TN CATHY 5W 0307 VE3NFK 559 ON JOHN 5W 0312 WA9CW 559 WI TOM 5W 0312 KC1FB 559 CT JIM 5W 0316 N9OHW 599 CA MIKE 5W 0318 N8SS 559 MI EARL 5W **DUPE** 0328 W0JOE 559 MO JOE 5W 0330 KW4NJA FOX GA SCOTT 5W 0330 W9CF FOX AZ KEVIN 5W

Thank goodness the storms held off here in Athens, GA. I think I did a little better managing "split" this time, but the pileups are something else. I'm sorry if I missed some of you. No doubt there were several who heard me but I could never dig you out of the pileup. I did my best. I'll be back next Tuesday as a 40M foxii again, hoping to improve some more. AutoHotKey for Foxii
If you don¡¯t have AHK installed on your computer, I¡¯ve read where an AHK file can be amended such that the user does not need the software loaded on their machine. Let me know if you¡¯re interested in me attempting to create one of those versions. I¡¯ve attached two versions of my AutoHotKey (AHK) files designed for the fox to use in fox hunts. The objective being to minimize keystrokes. One important thing which may immediately rule you out as being able to use it hinges on which keyboard keys are used to enter numbers. When I¡¯m typing calls into N1MM, I use the number keys that are located across the top of the keyboard. I don¡¯t use the numpad numbers except maybe in contests where the exchange is numbers. If you use the numpad, then AHK cud be chg¡¯d to Alt+numpad or something like that. Here are two N1MM settings that have to do with what happens when the Enter key is hit and what happens when you tune & change freq. ESM mode has the Enter key do different things depending on where you are in the QSO. There¡¯s also a setting that will switch from Run mode to S&P mode when you tune to a diff freq. I use ESM mode but I think maybe the only difference for those who don¡¯t may be in how the QSO is logged. I¡¯ll first explain how the ¡°_AHKTestBAddEscKeepKeysV4OnlyBellsNoWhistles¡± (OnlyBells) version works. Call CQ by hitting F1 key Enter hound call (using numbers at top of keyboard) If you want to send 569, then hit the ¡®6¡¯ key on the numpad. This will send his call, 569, your exchange, his call, and position the cursor at the Received RST spot. Then type in the S of RST you receive, then space to get to QTH, enter it, space, enter Name, space, Power. I¡¯m at my QTH without a rig, so I¡¯m not certain what key to hit if you need to enter 339, rather than 539. Then hit Enter which logs QSO & begins the TU etc. (See how my function keys are set below.) If you abort sending the exchange with the Esc key, you must do things differently to send the correct stuff. And depending how much of the exchange has been sent when you hit Esc, you may or may not have to Tab to the RST to be sent & enter it (NOT using the keypad) I think this happened with me a couple times where I didn¡¯t get the RST changed & sent 599 ¡ oh, well ¡ ----- I used the ¡°BellsAndWhistles¡± version in my last hunt. And I¡¯ve decided not to use it in my next hunt for reasons that will be given below. It¡¯s been several weeks since I¡¯ve played with all this so my recollection of exactly what happens may be flawed. This version attempts to reset things when you hit the numpad & the exchange begins but for some reason you need to abort by hitting Esc. When that happens ESM shifts to log QSO & send TU, such that hitting the numpad to restart things does not work. So, I rigged AHK to store the call entered, then Esc (which resets ESM), then paste call in & wait for numpad to be hit. It works great except when you really want F12 to do what it normally does, clear everything out & start from scratch. Once or twice I was in that situation and hitting F12 kept pasting the call I wanted to erase into the call area. (Note my F8-F11 change my antennas & have nothing to do with this discussion) (I have both Run & S&P function set this way) F1 Cq,CQ FOX {MYCALL} UP F2 EXCH,{SENTRSTCUT} {EXCH} ! F3 Tu,TU FOX {MYCALL} UP F4 {MYCALL},{MYCALL} F5 His Call,! F6 CL?,CL? F7 ?,? F8 Rx,{CAT1ASC AN919;} F9 Off,{CAT1ASC AN909;} F10 ANT1,{CAT1ASC AN199;}{CAT1ASC AC000;} F11 ANT2,{CAT1ASC AN299;}{CAT1ASC AC110;} F12 Wipe,{WIPE}

Good Luck tonight you two sly FOXes.. If you're live logging, don't forget to click on the "Fritz icon" That's all you need to do to make the dots happen, if you are puter logging. Please send you log to scorekeeper as soon as possible after the hunt is completed. Have a great day, Dale - WC7S in Wy "Actions speak louder than words" From: [email protected] <[email protected]> on behalf of Scott Wooten - KW4NJA via groups.io <Wooten1027@...> Sent: Monday, February 10, 2025 2:16 PM To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Subject: [qfox] KW4NJA 40M Fox announcement for Tuesday night (Wednesday 0200UTC) Hello all......I will be one of the 2 foxii for Tuesday night's QRP Fox Hunt on 40M. Kevin W9CF will be in Arizona, so there will be lots of chances for both East and West Coast hounds to get their shot. I will be operating from my QTH in Athens, GA on my FTDx10 turned to 5W running through an OCF Dipole elevated 23'. I will be running "split", listening UP 1-2 kHz, so please spread your calls out a little. I intend to send no faster than 22wpm but will slow down for those of you who need me to QRS. Heavy rain may be in Athens tomorrow night, but hopefully, the QRN won't be an issue. If I need to come off the air due to lightning, I will post it to this reflector and be back on the air ASAP. I may ask for fills, so please refrain from sending your whole exchange again. I'll ask for Call? QTH? NAME? or PWR? I will send your callsign at the beginning and end of the exchange, and post to the Frtiz Map. Check the map after our exchange, and if you don't see it, call me again so we can be sure to get you in my log. I'm looking forward to my second run (hopefully smoother on my end this time) as a foxii. 73!! Scott KW4NJA

Let's talk about this.....
3
On a recent blog post I read: "My problem is that I can barely walk and chew gum at the same time and trying to work stations and then type in call signs and real time log would be an absolute debacle. I can only imagine that if I tried this, my QSO count (which is never very high compared to other Foxes to begin with) would go way, way down. So I will paper log this last time, publish it the next day and I will bow out of volunteering for Fox duty to more capable hands than mine. I dare say that my difficulty is not an age thing, it's a lack of coordination thing, and I don't want to spoil anyone's fun or be a hindrance to the process." I utilize Fritz's mapping when my turn to fox comes up. But most nights I quit with hounds still baying. I feel I could hand out more pelts (most nights) if I wasn't computer logging. But as a hound I do appreciate having the instant results of the map dots. Several of our veteran foxii don't use the mapping system, but they sure do hand out a lot of pelts! I don't think we should be pressuring our foxii to use the maps. I don't think we can afford to loose foxii due computer logging. And I'm sure the added complicity is a factor in getting new foxii to enlist. We're not going to have fox hunts without the foxii. 72, Don, K9DRP
