KW4NJA Preliminary log for 80M 1.24.2025
Well........that was my first foray into the "world of Foxii land", and I must say it was quite a thrill.? I started working split up +1 on 3.566 until the pack of hounds thinned out. Around 0250Z I went simplex for a short time on 3.566 until I started getting hammered by another signal. I moved to 3.564 and resumed my CQ. It wasn't long before I started getting another small pileup of pelt hunters. I heard a few weak signals, but couldn't pull them out of the noise well enough to log a solid contact. My apologies for those I missed. Overall it was a great experience!! I hope I served you all well tonight. Thanks for Fritz's help in making sure I was all set. I look forward to my next rounds in February.? If there are any error in this log, please let me know.

Scott,
I believe you effectively went simplex much earlier in the hunt than you believe you had. I was calling you right away at first, when it seemed you were having trouble hearing anyone, but still when you were calling UP (if I remember correctly). Rather than stick around, I chose to go looking for Fritz for awhile instead. When I came back to you at about 0220, it was like everyone was already piled right on top of you, well below a UP 1 split. You were also calling QRZ without any UP to go with it. I had figured you had gone simplex already then, which could make sense if propagation wasn't allowing anyone to be really loud to you and therefore be noticed while looking UP 1 or higher. For a first night, you still ended up with a decent-sized log. About what I had on my first forays as a fox two years back. Keep at it, especially trying to spread us hounds out further apart and higher in frequency, which will come with practice. Kevin Anderson, K9IUA Dubuque, Iowa |
Agreed. He was simplex real early and it was a feeding frenzy. People calling on top of him even while he was calling someone. I could hear him weakly when he was replying to someone, but I could never hear who he called because people kept sending while he was replying and most were much louder than he. Knowing he was weak, and I likely would be as weak, and realizing I probably wouldn't know it if he did call me, I grinned, shook my head, and turned the radio off. I joined the wife watching TV.

EVERYONE has their own idea about how things should be done. When I am comparing the two runs.. They look fairly equal.. And nothing to be ashamed of at all!!?
And learning pack control is an ongoing lesson... What works some weeks.. Won't work the next time... Next band.. next season... Learning as many methods as?possible is a good thing.. Makes for more tools in the tool box. Skill builders!!
? More skills makes for more fun in contests... Dx chasing.. POTA, SOTA, and Nets. Sticking with the effort while learning is foundational. I don't know of anyone that has all the skills they will ever need.?
Have a great day,

Well.....from the responses I am getting, I didn't do as good of a job as I thought. I guess I'll go back to the drawing board and figure it out. In the meantime, if there is an error in the log let me know.

Thanks,

For what it's worth, I had no trouble copying/working Scott with an ancient HW-16 paired with an outboard audio filter. Al, K2ZN On Fri, Jan 24, 2025, 11:00 Dale Putnam via <daleputnam=[email protected]> wrote:

开云体育All absolutely true.? And the activator (FOX) controls the pile-up.? They get to run it the way they want to run it.? They decide when they run split or simplex.? None of the hounds know the reason the FOX went simplex so early.? It doesn’t matter.? The FOX controls the pile-up.? Period. And I am certain I could not have done better. Vy73 - Mike - KD5KC. 开云体育NO – it wasn’t you at all.? You are the FOX – you run the show.? The issue was that when you would reply to someone there were a few hounds running simplex that were still sending.? It was near impossible to tell who you were calling for most exchanges.? There were a couple of times I thought you might be calling me so I sent my call again and heard nothing. Vy73 - Mike - KD5KC.
