Reminder: APR/MAY print exchanges
2
Hi folks, Just a reminder that I would need to receive prints from all participants by May 23rd (18 days from today) in order to sort, repackage and mail them back to the group before I leave Alaska on May 25th. If I don't have all the prints by the 23rd, I will mail them back to the group when I return to Alaska in mid-June. I finished making 6 sets of my own prints and the 2 sets I printed for Jeff Deam for the April/May B&W and Color exchanges. I haven't received April/May prints from any other participants yet. Gary

FINAL APRIL/MAY 2024 B&W and Color Exchange Lists - PLEASE READ
The final count for the regular size B&W exchange is 10 and the Color exchange is 11. I will be traveling out of Alaska beginning May 25th and will return during the third week of June. If I receive all of the April/May prints BEFORE May 23rd, I will get them mailed back to you before I leave on May 25th. Otherwise, I won't be able to return the prints to the group until I am back sometime after mid-June. The following photographers are signed up for the Black & White exchange: Tom O'Connell Gary Benson Jayanand Govindaraj Steve Mustoe Nara Narasimhan Rob Schwartz Jeff Deam Joshua Daniels S. Prabhakaran Oscar Avellaneda-Cruz The following photographers are signed up for the Color print exchange: Tom O'Connell Gary Benson Jayanand Govindaraj Steve Mustoe Nara Narasimhan Rob Schwartz Jeff Deam Josh Daniels S. Prabhakaran Oscar Avellaneda-Cruz David Reesor Please ship your prints for repackaging to: Gary Benson 9843 Little Diomede Circle Eagle River, Alaska 99577 (907) 242-6538 TO SUCCESSFULLY PARTICIPATE PLEASE READ ALL OF THE GUIDELINES BELOW =================================================================== 1) Prints are to be on either Letter (8.5x11) or A4 (8.3"x11.7") size paper. Please sign the print (generally done on the front). 2) On the 16th of the month you will be notified of how many participants there are for each exchange. You are to print one print for each of the other participants and one for yourself. 3) Prints should be enclosed in individual clear sleeves (for example Clear Bags B811SNF) along with a Tech Sheet. Include the date of the exchange, your name, print title and any information about the subject matter, printer, inkset, software, workflow etc on the Tech Sheet which may be of interest to other participants. Optional: also include your own critique of your image. 4) Make sure that whatever return box or mailing method you use can accommodate both Letter (8.5x11) and A4 (8.3"x11.7") sized prints. The total number of prints submitted is likely be greater than for the prior monthly print exchanges, so for those participants in the USA a USPS Flat Rate Medium size box is probably the best choice, especially if you are participating in both the B&W and Color print exchanges. 5) For example, mailing your prints (addressed to the print exchange coordinator) in a USPS Flat Rate envelope or medium size box with an enclosed prepaid USPS Click-n-Ship return LABEL for a Flat Rate envelope or medium size box (addressed to yourself) should work very well. See this message for additional details and images of how others have packaged their prints. 6) If you have not included a return postage pre-paid label please send the print exchange coordinator funds for the cost of a USPS Flat Rate envelope or medium size box (whichever you prefer to use) attached to a sheet of paper which clearly shows your return address. 7) Upload a file of the image you have printed into the correct photo album. It permits those that are not actively participating in the current exchange an opportunity to observe. It also creates a historical record that is useful over the years. 8) Comments on prints are welcome and encouraged, but are not required for participation in a print exchange. Any topic or theme for a print exchange is entirely optional. With best regards, Gary Benson one of the print exchange moderators (907) 242-6538 bensonga@...

Feb/March prints are in the mail¡
I mailed all of the US bound prints yesterday and the box of prints to India for Jayanand, Nara and Prabhakaran today. When Mike is ready, we¡¯ll arrange to have his prints picked up for delivery to the UK. There were outstanding prints in both the large and regular size print exchanges. That said, many of the large prints are especially good and impressive. I wish we could do a large print exchange more often. I know it costs quite a bit more for the paper, ink and shipping (especially outside the US) and requires more effort to print, package and mail them, but from my perspective, it is worth it. Gary

missed large print deadline
Hi Folks: Regrettably, I've been unable to get my set of large prints out to you all this go-round¡ªdespite best efforts. I apologize to those of you who produced large prints for me, but trust you'll find a proper home for those no doubt lovely prints. I will look forward to enjoying your standard sized prints, as well as the e-images of your large ones, and hope to participate in the large print exchange next go-round. Appreciatively, ¡ªJosh Daniels

Update re Feb/Mar 2024 Large and Regular Exchanges
2
I sorted and packed all of the prints today. For the four people who participated in the regular exchange but not the large exchange (Steve, Josh, David and Oscar), I will be mailing your prints today or delivering them in person this week (Oscar). For those who participated in both the large and regular exchanges, I hope to get yours in the mail on Monday, unless you¡¯ve requested that I hold your package to mail at a later date. I still have some issues to sort out re securely fitting all the prints in the mailers. Also, for the US bound mailers I want to have a USPS postal clerk verify whether the postage on the mailers will be charged at the flat rate for a medium box or a rate based on the flattened box size/weight. We¡¯ve had inconsistent results from USPS locations in the past so I want to avoid any problems with ¡°postage due¡±. Thanks again to everyone who participated in the regular and/or the annual large print exchange! Gary

Update on Feb/Mar Large & Regular Exchanges
Hi folks. We are getting very close to the end of March due date for the Feb/March exchanges. I hope to recieve all of the prints no later than Saturday the 30th so I can spend next weekend sorting, packaging and mailing the prints back to you. Kathleen and I will be flying Texas during the first week of April to see the total solar eclipse on April 8th, so I'll be busy during the first few days of April getting ready for that trip. We won't be back in Alaska until the 15th. First off, I want to thank everyone who has already sent their prints to me. I really appreciate getting them well before the due date. Large BW & Color I've received prints from all participants but one. I expect his prints will be mailed this coming Tuesday and hope they will arrive here by the 30th. Regular BW & Color I've received prints from all particpant but three. I expect to receive prints from two of them in the next few days and hope the final set will arrive by the 30th. It takes more time to sort and pack both large and regular size prints, but it is generally more efficient and cost effective to bundle them all together and in a single mailer/box (when possible). I'll be quite busy next weekend getting these all ready to go and mailed out. I'm sure for those of you who are participating in the large print exchange, you'll find it was worth the time, effort and added cost on your end. I'll post another note next weekend with an update. Best regards, Gary

Dec 2023/Jan 2024 Exchange
2
I just returned from a month in Belize and found the latest exchange prints waiting for me. What a delightful welcome home gift! So many good images. Where to start¡ I have always been in awe of Gary¡¯s skill and mastery of the digital printing process. His sharing a collection of his superb black and white prints with me over fifteen years ago got me interested in printing and, subsequently, this exchange. While I do not always appreciate the images he chooses (I fear I made my esthetic biases clear in an earlier post) every so often one of his efforts really rings my bell. That is the case with his Bird Point at Low Tide. I love it! And I¡¯m pretty sure I have taken in this vista, most likely on a motorcycle trip I took with him down Turnagain Arm to Hope many years ago. Excellent! Rob¡¯s Manhattan was a surprise - I had not expected such detail and tonality in a shot from an iPhone. The composition, perspective control, and color drew me in, a very striking image. It makes me want to start using my iPhone 13 Pro Max for something other than photos of our cat :) Rick¡¯s Amaryllis Chico is just the latest in his series of exquisite flower images that my wife wants to put on our wall. The mirror image flip technique really worked well. Josh¡¯s Men Dancing is a remarkable composition, a still image that conveys so much energy and action. Beautifully printed as well. Before viewing Nara¡¯s Dosai Amma I was unaware of the history of the the dhobi ghats. His portrait is beautifully composed and lighted, and I love the look of concentration on the woman¡¯s face as she tends to the dosa. It makes me hungry for masala dosa, which I simply cannot find here in Eugene :( I really do need to get back to India, not just for the culture but for the food as well. David¡¯s Fish Bros Flats caught my eye right away. I¡¯m sure I have passed this building when in Astoria but never paid it much attention. His subtle image made me look at it through new eyes. This was a print that absolutely had to be viewed outside the sleeve to be fully appreciated. An excellent printing job. On a separate note, one of my own prints that I received back had the wrong data sheet in it, so I suspect one or more of you may have received a print of mine where the sheet made no sense. If so, let me know which image it was and I can let you know the real details. Now to start working on my prints for the next exchange...

Sorry for the delay, but our Saturday evening flight from Seattle to Anchorage was delayed, so we didn't arrive in Anchorage until 2 am Sunday.
