Re: Important Reminder: DEC 2023/ JAN 2024 B&W and Color Exchange Early Due Date
Mike and all....
I've received all the prints except for Oscar's and Mike's.? I'm meeting Oscar this afternoon to get his prints. A few days ago Kathleen and I had to cancel our 2 week trip to Arizona and New Mexico and book a flight to Seattle for a 1 week trip to see Kathleen's 92 year old mother.? She is having some health problems (serious, but not life threatening).? We expect to return to Alaska on February 4th. Mike -- if your prints don't arrive before Friday I'll hold off on mailing the prints back until I return on the 4th, at which time surely/hopefully yours will have arrived here (our USPS mail will be held at the local post office).? I apologize for the extra delay in getting prints mailed back to everyone.? At least they will/should be mailed to you before mid-February. Gary |

Hi Gary, My prints arrived?@ USPS customs in LA on 16th. Still there! Horror stories online of LA customs taking weeks to process packages. Sorry might not make it this week - we will see. Best, Mike On Tue, 16 Jan 2024 at 07:35, Michael King <drmrking@...> wrote:

Re: Important Reminder: DEC 2023/ JAN 2024 B&W and Color Exchange Early Due Date
Thanks, Gary... if we don't have challenges now and then, it means we're not having fun!
USPS tracking says you should get mine tomorrow (Monday) morning.? The computer compatibility issue was fixed with a new computer, Photoshop now installed - - we'll see how long this one lasts at the current rate of software changes & requirements.?? The most interesting problem to solve was the P800 printer issue.? My printer sits near a window with a shade that is usually down, especially when I am printing, so I have consistent light for evaluating prints.? Over the Christmas holiday, we had company from out of town and we had a lot of the shades up for more light.? When I fired up the printer, it took a couple of days to get around to actually printing and light shone in that window onto the open front print output tray.? Evidently, there is a sensor inside the printer, so the technician tells me, that detects changes in light that would indicate that the printer does not have a correcting receiving tray and will not allow the printer to print.? I was incredulous when he told me to close the shade, cycle the printer off and unpower it, let it rest, then start it up again... and it worked! Of course, I had done the recycling several times already to see if I could get it to start, but never closed the shade.? That was the key. I hope they are worth the effort. |

Re: Important Reminder: DEC 2023/ JAN 2024 B&W and Color Exchange Early Due Date
Thanks Mike and Westley for getting your prints mailed this week.? They should arrive here early next week.? In addition to the prints from Steve and Tom, I've also received those from Rob, Rick, Jeff, Jayanand, Nara and Prabhakaran.? Oscar said he will have his prints ready for me by Wednesday.? Hopefully the prints from Josh and David will arrive here too.? We are flying out of Anchorage Friday evening, so I'll have Thursday and Friday to get the prints sorted, packed and mailed back to all of you before I go.
Westley - That's quite an ordeal you went thru to get the prints made for this exchange! Thank you for the extra time, expense and effort you made to complete them.? I really look forward to seeing your prints and I know many others do as well.? I hope you're able to get the computer and software issues resolved soon. All the best, Gary |
Re: Important Reminder: DEC 2023/ JAN 2024 B&W and Color Exchange Early Due Date
My prints were sent this morning...
These prints were not meant to be.? I took the pictures early in December.? But I discovered that my photo workstation would no longer run Photoshop due to a mandatory update (...I've had updates turned off for a year...) that required HW I didn't have.? I scrambled around and came up with a laptop that could run Photoshop and drive my Epson printer with ABW, but none of the print configurations I had been working with for years produced usable prints.? I burned 2 ink cartridges and most of a pack of paper getting something respectable, but not what I really wanted.? So I was able to make and dry prints over the weekend.? Then I realized after I dropped the packet at the PO that I neglected to sign them.? ?Hopefully I'll do better next month. |

HI Gary, Belated Happy New Year. Sent my prints yesterday. You?should receive them Monday or latest Tuesday. I'll track them and keep you updated. Thanks again for sorting all these packages. No need to send my package back now, will ship back with large prints in a couple months. Kind regards, Mike On Sat, 6 Jan 2024 at 00:15, Gary <bensonga@...> wrote: Hi folks, |
Couple of print comments
Happy New Year to all. I don't get time to look at the print exchange photos on a regular basis and often binge a year or two (maybe three) at the same time! Over the holidays I got a chance to look back over the last few years of my sporadic?participation. I wanted to make a few comments... First I love the anticipation?of opening the packages, even months or years later and all the prints are always good to great. But I have my favorites and I think Otto's machinery photos are awesome especially "Gears etc" from October 22. I love the gold detail and texture. Also I always know that Jayanand's prints are likely to impress. I was inspired?by his use of Hahemuhle?metallic paper and tried a couple of my own prints on this, but as yet I never had?a print that compared with Jayanand. The one that really stood out for me was "My Third Eye" from December 2020 (ok so 3 years ago now!). I can see that as an A1 print on my wall. Thank you all for your prints and especially making A4 work, a size which I personally?struggle with. I am submitting some prints for the current A4 exchange, but my heart is in the upcoming A3+.? I (think) I have some amazing images to share. Finally at big thank you to Gary for handling all the admin and submitting so many prints of his own. Neither an easy task. All the best, Mike |

Hi folks,
Happy New Year to everyone! Just a reminder that I would like to receive ALL of the prints for this exchange by Wednesday, January 24th?(preferably before then).? If I have all the prints I will get them sorted, packed and mailed back to the group before I leave Alaska on the afternoon of the 26th.? If I haven't received ALL of the prints by the 24th, I won't be able to send ANY of the prints back to the group before I get home in mid-February. Thus far, I've received Dec/Jan prints from Steve and Rob (thanks guys!!). Now is a good time to start printing, if you haven't already. Gary |

Re: On Landscape digital magazine
Thanks, Mike, I will check it out. Another excellent online magazine on landscapes is Elements Magazine: Cheers Jayanand On Sat, Dec 23, 2023 at 12:38?AM Michael King <drmrking@...> wrote:

Re: On Landscape digital magazine
I agree Mike re the value of the On Landscape magazine.? I've subscribed since Nov. 2020.
Although I take very few landscape photographs anymore I still enjoy looking at landscape photos and reading the articles in this digital magazine. I also prefer the On Landscape model for a digital magazine because I can download the complete issues in a high resolution PDF and view them on the larger monitor of my desktop computer.? This is MUCH better than viewing them on a tablet.? Once I have downloaded the issues, whether current issues or from the archive of past issues, I will have access to the PDF files even if I decided to cancel my subscription someday.? This is better than the online/digital subscription model of the Leica Fotografie International (LFI) magazine which is only available on an Apple or Android app, so limited to the size of a tablet.? I've had a LFI print and digital subscription for 9 years.? While I do have digital access to LFI issues going back to 1949, I don't think I would have access to any of these issues if I cancelled my LFI subscription, since they must be viewed through the LFI app and an active subscription is required. On Landscape digital magazine
I am not sure if I have mentioned it here before - but I can't recommend the On Landscape digital magazine enough to those of you who like photographing landscapes.?@ about $75 a year for two magazine?issues a month. Also you get access to 294 back issues ! I have no?affiliation?- just a keen subscriber. Best, Mike |
Re: October/November Exchange
My second perusal of the prints in the latest exchange caused me to notice a few that had slipped under my radar the first time around.
?
Jeff¡¯s Mammoth Springs is beautifully printed. Ansel Adams would approve - all the zones from I through IX are present. Very nice!
?
Oscar¡¯s As Above So Below is an intriguing composition. I can only imagine how the image would have popped out of the paper with a bit more contrast (and perhaps a surface other than matte). I suspect it would match the brilliance of the original scene.
?
Tom¡¯s Palm Springs Rain really grew on me the second time I viewed it. Initially I found the raindrops in the foreground distracting, but now I appreciate what they add to the image. And really¡. rain in Palm Springs?? That would be a first for me :)
?
I am eager to view the next batch of prints. Rhonda and I will be spending a month in Belize starting mid-January so I am hopeful I will return with something decent to offer in the February-March exchange.
