Re: FINAL UPDATE: Aug/Sept Prints
One last update for the Aug/Sept exchange. ?I finished sorting and re-packaging them last evening and I will get them in the mail to you today.
PACKAGES FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS IN THE USA WERE DROPPED OFF AT THE EAGLE RIVER POST OFFICE THIS AFTERNOON.
There are quite a few excellent prints in this exchange and I usually don¡¯t comment on them here, however there was one image/print in particular that just blew me away when I saw it. ?Jayanand¡¯s color print of a ¡°Lilac-breasted Roller¡± with a stunning African sunset in the background, printed on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag Metallic paper. ?Wow! ?This image works really well on that paper. ?Thank you for sharing it with us Jayanand.
I want to encourage all of you to remove the prints from the protective sleeves when viewing them, at least once. ?There are some interesting papers in this exchange and to fully appreciate them you need to see and feel the paper without the sleeve. ?This is especially true for prints on matte papers.
Thanks again to all the participants for sharing your photos and prints with us!
Gary

Re: UPDATE: Aug/Sept Prints
Mike's prints arrived yesterday, so I have all the Aug/Sept prints now.? I will get them sorted, re-packed and mailed back to all of you in the next couple of days.
Winter weather made its first appearance here in Eagle River yesterday.? Snow and ice.? So much fun.? :-(

Thanks for the updates Nara, Josh and Mike.? I am flying to Seattle again this Wednesday and will not be back in Alaska until this Sunday evening.? My wife Kathleen will be here this week to receive any prints that arrive while I'm in Washington.? Early next week will be the soonest I can get the Sept/Oct prints sorted and mailed back to everyone, if the remaining prints arrive here by then.

Hopefully get them out to you by Courier Monday/Tuesday and should be with you by end of next week. I went from being totally in control of shipping early, to totally swamped with other stuff.

Hi folks,
We got back from our trip to Washington and Colorado last Saturday.? Seventeen days of sunny, dry and hot weather sure felt good after days and days of cool, rainy weather here in southcentral Alaska since early July (which has continued right through the fall season).? I saw the first snow on the mountains this morning here in Eagle River valley.? It is known locally as "termination dust".
I received three sets of prints from Rob, Steve and Richard while I was away.? There are eight days left in September, so if you haven't already mailed your prints to me, please do it soon.? I would like to have all the prints sorted and mailed back to you during the first week of October, if not sooner.
Thanks!

I think many of you will enjoy and be as impressed as I am with Jeff's photos of birds and the documentation/organization of his many bird photos.
Check out his Flickr site:
As you could also see in his photos/prints in the June/July color exchange from the Mt. Baker/Snoqualmie National Forest and early print exchanges, he is very good at taking landscape photos too.

I go by ¡°Josh.¡± I¡¯m a Eugene-based, long time enthusiast and professional photographer, educator, and small biz entrepreneur (I started a portrait and event photography business in 2006, and, concurrently have run two small, online specialty equipment and service companies aimed at professional and enthusiast photographers). I¡¯ve been involved with scanning and digital printing since the Polaroid SprintScan 4000 and Epson 1280? (how wonderful to use such short hand to express the history of an activity, like saying I learned to drive in a Model T!). I have until recently run large format Epson printers, mainly for professional work, but in recent years switch over to Canon ProGraf 2000s and recently added a PG 1000 (used for the prints you¡¯ve received).
I¡¯ve been deeply immersed in things photographic for the past two decades, and in truth a good part of my life has been in and around photography. Like some of you, I suspect, I¡¯ve been taking pictures since I was young¡ªabout nine years old in my case, and spent countless hours of my teenage years in a darkroom. And, I also suspect, as with some of you, an alternative introduction would be something like, ¡®Hi, I¡¯m Josh and I¡¯m a cameraholic¡± (my children grew up hearing the phrase, ¡°the camera closet,¡± on a regular basis). I had the privilege of living in Japan for a few years where I re-immersed myself in photography, and cameras and camera-culture, and have been acquiring new and (to me) interesting gear ever since. I didn¡¯t return to post-processing or printing, however, until the late 90s, and around 2003, ¡°went digital,¡± when HP introduced the PhotoSmart printer and a cartridge with three gray levels. I didn¡¯t give up film for another seven or eight years, though, and still occasionally relish a film image (especially one properly scanned and digitally printed). Confession: with a friend, I recently bought an entire darkroom outfit, complete with a Beseler 45 enlarger (now called ¡°Printmaker¡±); the purchase was an opportunity coupled with a spasm of passion, but I have yet to put these to use. Amazing, mind-blowing, and paradigm changing as digital has been, to me black and white film still captures some ¡°essence¡± outside of digital capture (a longer conversation, for sure).
I currently wear several hats at the community college where I teach photography, non-credit courses in ¡°community ed,¡± and for-credit courses in English composition, rhetoric, and business communications. In most recent years I¡¯ve shifted my photography focus towards teaching and have reduced shooting professional gigs, though I continue to do some when opportunity and interest coincide. As some of you may have learned, everyone in the world with a smartphone (and I guess that probably includes all of us, redundantly) is a photographer! As you may also know, this reality has had a huge impact on the photography services market, attention span for studying photographs, especially prints (with which contact may be rare if non-existent), and for valuing photography-as-craft / skilled labor. Images are consumables, in the mass market. I am grateful to have multiple activity pathways into the photographic world and profession, and sympathize with professional friends and colleagues who¡¯ve seen the market shrivel and cheapen.
I¡¯m also an avid outdoors person, hiker, sometimes cyclist, and camper, and my photography has often overlapped with these activities. I have, for the most part, been an active, enthusiast photographer, in the midst of every day and family life, and have tried to sustain a number of long-term personal projects, many of them still ongoing (e.g., a series on vine maples).
Equipment: for most of my professional career I¡¯ve shot some kind of Nikon camera (or Nikon-based Fuju), but for the past decade or so have shifted primarily to Olympus m43 gear. I love the optics, build quality, and weatherproofing (one of my EM bodies took a dip in the Mediterranean and has worked perfectly since), and I have learned to accept the sensor limitations (DXO PureRAW is my superhero). I still wish for a really small, professional-grade digital full frame body and sset of compact prime lenses¡ªa body no more than 500 grams and primes sized no larger than my ¡®80s era AIS Nikkors, 35/2, 50/1.4, and 85/2 (and sometimes a 24/2 or 28/2 added to my kit). Think: Nikon FM2 with 3-4 lenses in a small bag. I know, I know, digital needs bigger lenses; body needs bigger grips. M43, at the beginning was aiming at my optimal form factor, and the right body and lens combo nails it pretty well (just, with a smaller sensor). I await the camera-messiah, like many a cameraholic, and perhaps this will be a better Sony A7C with Sigma compact lenses, perhaps, though I sure wish Nikon would produce it! Mostly, though, I¡¯m impressed enough with m43 image quality, and appreciate the many fine, and unique qualities of the Olympus (oops: supposed to say OM Digital Solutions¡ªgive me a break). Oh, and the in-body-image-stabilization is unparalleled (I have a Nikon Z body, and it¡¯s not even close). I¡¯ve had opportunity to own or own a good number of cameras and lenses, and my current stuff ticks the most boxes, but of course, I¡¯m open to the next great thing!
I look forward to learning about your experiences and preference with gear, as well as seeing more of your images!
Thanks so much for bringing me in to the fold, Gary! Cheers, for now, to the rest of you, and look forward to our next go-round.
