Hi Gary:?

Hope all’s well on your end.?

Mine will ship on 9/24, when I return to Eugene (some traveling on the east coast in progress). A little tight, but we should be ok.?

Alternate pano print exchange (up to 14" length papers)

As I mentioned in my reply to Westley's post, I often start printing my panoramic photos on 5.5x14 inch paper that I have cut from 11x14 inch sheets, before I move on to printing them on larger sizes of pre-cut pano papers.
?
This morning I wondered if USPS makes a Flat Rate 'Legal' size envelope which would accomodate those 5.5x14 inch papers.? If so, this would provide a reasonably priced option for mailing/exchanging this size of panoramic prints (at least in the US) and the prints themselves would not require as much storage space as larger panoramic prints do.
?
Sure enough USPS does have a Priority Mail Flat Rate Legal Envelope (9.5x15 inches).? The cost for mailing it in the US is $10.15.
?
Just a thought in case there is ever a wider interest in the group for exchanging relatively small panoramic prints.

Re: Panoramic print exchange?

Edited

Hi Westley.? Good to hear from you again!? I hope you will be able to participate in the B&W print exchanges again sometime in the months to come.? I know I'm not the only one here who always enjoys and appreciates your images and prints.
?
You can certainly submit panoramic format images printed on our usual 8.5x11 inch paper in any exchange.? If there is interest, we could even have a panoramic themed regular size print exchange in the future.
?
I personally prefer seeing panoramic images printed on larger size papers.? My minimum paper size now for making panoramic prints is 5.5x14 inches (I cut the 11x14 inch papers I have in half length-wise).? If I like a print on that size paper, I'll then go to the pre-cut sheets of 8.5x25 or 13x38 inch papers I get from Red River Paper.
?
For the larger size prints, it certainly helps to start with high resolution images, so I now take most of my panoramic photos with 40-50 mp FF35 sensor cameras or 50 mp medium format sensor cameras (Pentax 645z and Fuji GFX 50R).? I don't do much in the way of localized adjustments to my images, so I haven't noticed any significant degradation in the image quality when printing at these sizes.
?
On the topic of storing the prints, I certainly agree that it is a challenge (especially with the larger prints) and even more so for those of us who have been partcipating in the exchanges for many years.? I have recently been working on a project to sort, organize and re-pack into "bankers boxes" the letter/A4 size prints I've collected from print exchanges for the past 22 years (going back to the first exchange in April 2002).? It's been a trip down memory lane, for sure.

Re: Panoramic print exchange?

As you all know, I am not participating in the exchange right now due to family circumstances that require frequent travel between Texas and the northeast... However, I still follow the topics and the idea of panoramic images always intrigues me.
?
I create a lot of images that I print on 8.5x11" paper that are 3.5x10.5"... a 1:3 aspect ratio.? I have that image size stored in my photoshop cropping tool as a preset (3.5"x10.5" @ 300ppi).? I like that format because it provides a very crisp image that responds well to contrast and localized adjustments, where larger images sometimes washout or turn muddy when you attempt to do localized adjustments.?
?
I came upon this idea when I still had my wet darkroom but no facility to print negatives larger than 6x6, 6x4.5, or 35mm - - but I took lots of pictures with rollfilm backs on my 4x5 camera.? So I contact printed the larger negatives (4x5, 6x9, 6x12, 6x17) full size on 8x10 paper.? When I moved over into digital printing, I simply brought the same idea of small panoramic with me - - scanned larger images printed on 8.5x11" paper as if they were contact prints.
?
If you would consider these "panoramics" printed on 8.5x11" paper as acceptable, then I"d be interested in participating once I'm able to spend time working on images again.
?
BTW, I, too, am running out of space to store exchange prints.? I already have several warehouse bins stacked along the wall in my office that are full of prints from various exchanges going back to the early 2000s.

Re: Panoramic print exchange?

Thanks for your offer to participate if needed Tom. ?I’m fine with having a panoramic print exchange with just a few people (currently Josh, Mike and myself) who are really keen on it.
?
Unless someone else wants to join us (speak up now), I will contact Josh and Mike off-line to get this organized. No reason to take up bandwidth here on the regular print exchange group.
?

Hi Gary-

If having one more makes it work, put me in. I’m ambivalent about the format and like others, I’m running out of space for large photos. I have a number of ?large photos on one hallway wall (as large as 16x52) but they are really not panoramas, but rather big enlargements. Every time I get a new camera, I try the pano feature and then never use it again …my loss perhaps, but I’m becoming a creature of habit lately (which I’m almost officially allowed as my 80th birthday is on Election Day this year?:-)?

Keep us posted and thank for being so willing to try new stuff for the benefit of us all!

Would anyone be interested in doing a print exchange for just panoramic prints??

A panoramic image is generally defined as having a minimum aspect ratio of 2:1 (width:height) and most often wider.? The aspect ratio for the "XPan" format for example is 2.7x1.? Several medium format film "panoramic" cameras produce 6x17 cm images which have an aspect ratio of 2.8:1.
?
This could be done as a separate "special interest" print exchange (BW, Color or a single exchange for either/both) as there may not be many people interested in participating.?
?
Mailing the prints could be done in large tubes or if the print size was no larger than 8.5" on the short size we might be able to roll them to fit in the USPS Priority Mail Large box that is 12x12x8.5 inches, depending on the number of prints which need to fit in the box.
?
Re papers:? 17x22 or 17x25 paper could be cut to 8.5x22 or 8.5x25 inch sizes.? Red River Paper also sells several of their papers in pre-cut 8.5x25 and 13x38 sizes.

Re: Panoramic print exchange?

I will not take part, because handling and storing larger prints is becoming a headache. On top of that, occasionally, we have customs levied on prints, and larger prints will definitely attract that. I will stick to the A4 exchanges for the time being
