Winding Down 2024
12
Here's wishing all of you "old timers" of the PC world a better 2025! 2024 was not necessarily the best of times. I tore up my right shoulder in January, and didn't get surgery done (torn rotator cuff and torn biceps tendon) until August, so got in no riding this year. But, the shoulder is better, and I plan on spending more happy hours riding Nata Harli, the Yellow Peril, around the West this coming year. Hope you're all well and happy. I continue to miss seeing the folks I met on the various rides, but also continue to cherish the memories that were made. Dean Williams Springfield, Oregon

TGPCHPCMY2KMR - Pacific Coast PC800 Motorcycle Ride Planning] Winding Down 2024
I had my own issues in 2024. Had a “reverse total shoulder” done Jan 3rd, and I’m still recovering… The wound infected, then abscessed. So in May they had yo open me back in to clean the titanium parts and start all over again. Finally getting close to being good as it’s going to get. 2021 PCH Leland Memorial RIde
12
Rolled back home into Springfield, Oregon on Saturday, after a full week on the road. Put just over 1,900 miles on the clock. Attendance was light, but attendees were great. Aside from Douglas joining us from Monterey down through Big Sur, my 98 was the only PC on the ride, but each of the other riders were prior PC owners. Brother Kel from here in Springfield was on a (quiet) Harley Sportster, Bruce from Arizona was on a Can-Am Spyder, Revill from Austin was on his Africa Twin, and Charles from Minnesota was on a BMW GS. On Monday, Bruce and Charles opted to skip the Mattole Road/Lost Coast stretch. Understandable, since it's not for the faint of heart. Like a barroom brawl held in a phone booth. A PC is really not the appropriate tool for that road, but if you can ride the PC through there in "a sporting fashion", you've done something remarkable. I had to do it, in memory of the dozen or so times I trailed Leland through there. Then, the run through the Avenue of the Giants had fresh pavement throughout, which was a treat. The stretch of Hwy 1 from Leggett to the coast never fails to bring grins to my face, and was a treat this year as well. On into Ft Bragg, and dinner at the Wharf where Leland always had us booked. For me, the feeling of Leland's presence was particularly strong this day, that silly grin of his shining in my memory, plus his glass of milk at dinner with his margarita! Tuesday was our run from Ft Bragg to Pacifica. Pretty uneventful, but nice weather and roads without a lot of traffic. The stretch of CA-1 from Stinson Beach down to the Marin Headlands above the Golden Gate was just as twisty and challenging as ever. The entry to the Marin Headlands overlook has changed since our last visit, and has become a one-way loop. We only got to see the lower 2/3rds of the Golden Gate, due to incoming fog, but it was worth the stop nonetheless. Charles and his GPS led us through SF, and down into Pacifica for the night at Nick's Sea Breeze motel, which has neither improved or deteriorated in the 21 years I've been visiting there. Nick's Restaurant was closed, so we had dinner at Moonrakers next door. Wednesday, Bruce headed off towards Arizona and home. The remaining four had a pleasant ride down to Pescadero State Beach for our usual group photo. Only 4 bikes, and one PC, but I made sure we left a gap in the middle, sort of a "missing man formation", for Leland. We continued south to Santa Cruz, and took Hwy 9 up to Felton, to the Cowboy Bar & Grill, owned by Jim Geary, a former PC'er and genuinely nice guy. Jim was not in that day, so we didn't get to do a meet-and-greet with him, but the food and service were great, as usual, and Jim has REALLY spiffed up the place since he first bought it. It's a really nice place to have a meal. After lunch, Kel and Charles, rode farther up 9, to Skyline, to LaHonda, then back down 84 to Hwy 1. Turns out that Alice's Restaurant did not burn to the ground in last year's fires, as we'd been led to believe. Revill and I ran back down to Santa Cruz, then down Hwy 1 to Marina/Monterey and rested up. He and I have some physical issues that Kel & Charles don't, so a shorter day in the saddle was welcome. That evening, we all ran down to Cannery Row in Monterey, and had our dinner in the courtyard of the Salty Seal, which was Bullwackers back in the day, one of Leland's favorites. Douglas met us there, and we went through a storage tote of "Leland Memorabilia", and each of us snagged an item or two to remind us of the lovable curmudgeon. Thursday, we launched south, and Douglas joined us just south of Carmel, and we rode through Big Sur. Traffic was both surprisingly light, and surprisingly cordial, with most drivers using the pullouts regularly to get out of the way of our motorcycling group. After a potty break, Douglas headed back north, and the rest of us continued down to the south. We stopped and visited our kinfolk, the elephant seals, near San Simeon, then had a nice lunch in Cambria. The afternoon took us on down through San Luis Obispo, Pismo Beach, and finally into Lom

Re-visiting part of the Northwest part of the PCH ride

Brother Kel and I are leaving Monday (September 12th) to ride a loop up and over the Olympic Peninsula. We'll be on many of the roads that Leland mapped out and that the group rode on the Northerly version of our annual September rides. We will make a few detours, mainly in order to try to spend more time on the coast in Western Washington, but will still be on 101 for much of the trip. We'll be visiting with former PC'ers Wednesday in Port Angeles. It's September, and it just doesn't feel like September without doing at least a part of a ride that Leland made so memorable. Ride report
Howdy Coasters, I'm happy to report the riders on the TGPCHPCMY2KMR 20th Anniversary +1 ride passed through Big Sur today on their way south on the Pacific Coast Highway. All riders are current or former PC riders. Two PCs (including mine) were in attendance today when I joined the ride for the morning segment from Monterey down to Lucia. I posted a photo in the iPCRC group from today. More photos to follow probably next week once everyone gets home. Cheers, Douglas in Monterey

Who has decided to attend this year?
15
It looks like there are five known, confirmed riders who should be in Eureka on Sunday, September 12th. They've all communicated that they are committed to doing all or part of this years memorial ride. They are: Revill Dunn, Austin, TX Charles Holzerland, Albertville, MN Bruce Pickett, Prescott, AZ Kel Williams, Springfield, OR Dean Williams, Springfield, OR Are any of the rest of you folks intending to do all or part of the ride? If so, it would be most helpful if you would chime in now, with your intentions, where you intend to start, where you intend to end, et cetera. I suspect the group would hate to blow past you, not knowing that you're intending to be a part of the procession, or miss you at a rest or chow stop due to not expecting you. You might not know it's us, because out of the five listed above, only two of us (Charles and Dean) will be on PC's. So, please drop a note here to the list as to what your intentions are. Best regards, Dean Williams Springfield, OR

Hi All, Sadly, due to the continued situation with Covid-19/Variants, and due to the continued closure of the Canada-U.S. border (southbound), I will not be able to attend the group ride this year. I look forward to seeing all of you in the years ahead. Stay safe!!! Sincerely, Saul Apfelbaum Richmond, BC CANADA 1990 Pacific Coast – “Royal Gala”

Reluctantly having to miss the TGPCHPCMY2KMR-2021

Gentlemen and ladies: I've made the decision to opt out of the ride down the PCH this year due to health concerns. I will probably make a much shorter loop down the Oregon coast, over to Crater Lake and up through Central Oregon back to Portland Town. Hope all you intrepid folks have a great time! Maybe we can meet the next time around. Doug Schmitt

Getting to TGPCH...

Coming from northern Arizona, I would normally go through Las Vegas, then Reno and Redding to Eureka. But right now, there is pretty much a wall of fire along the California/Nevada border. Many of the National Forests along the way are closed. So I am going to change my route and go into southern California through Tehachapi Pass to Bakersfield and up Interstate-5 (ugh!). I encourage all non-Californians traveling into the state to check the current fire conditions along their routes. https://ucanr.edu/sites/fire/Safety/Current/ https://inciweb.nwcg.gov/ https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/ https://www.frontlinewildfire.com/california-wildfire-map/ Be seeing you, Bruce Pickett Prescott, AZ -- Be seeing you (BC'ing U) Bruce Pickett Prescott AZ 2005 Honda Goldwing GL1800 "Blue's Brother"

Six weeks until we ride!
5
Howdy Coasters! We're about six weeks out from the ride! So far, things look okay along the Pacific Coast. There aren't any big fires burning near Highway 1. There aren't any mudslides or other road blockages. The state has not fallen into the Pacific Ocean. There are some mask mandates coming back into force for indoor settings in certain counties along the route. The Delta variant has picked up steam so some counties are requiring everyone to wear masks indoors with more no doubt following suit soon. So far, no counties are shutting down businesses or banning out-of-area travelers yet. I don't think we'll see that happen again but considering what we've been through the last year and a half, who knows! Even if it's like last year with most businesses closed or on extremely limited service availability, that won't stop anyone from making their own personal decisions about doing the ride. This is an un-ride in the sense that we only have the route that Leland laid out for us and a date that many of us preferred. Beyond that, there are no leaders and there are no followers. Everyone is doing their own ride and we just happen to be meeting up along the way, riding together when convenient, and talking about our individual ride plans here. So regardless of whatever the next six weeks hold for California and PCH 1, it's each of your own decisions on if you ride or you don't ride. There is no pressure from anyone on your decision. Do what you want to do and what you feel is right for you. Cheers, Douglas in foggy Monterey

Unfortunate News...
2
Hi, Friends.... This will stir some memories for those of you who had been along on some of our more recent PCH September rides. Earlier this afternoon, Joe Laurence of Roseburg, Oregon was killed in a motorcycle accident on Oregon Hwy 138 east of Roseburg. Reports state that he was westbound, and struck the rear of another westbound vehicle that was waiting to turn left off of the highway. He died at the scene. Joe was a former Douglas County commissioner and was pretty passionate about his motorcycling. The news report mentioned he was on a Honda motorcycle at the time of the accident. I don't know if he owned another Honda, aside from his 1989 PC800. Joe had signed up for the 2021 PCH Memorial Ride. I thought those of you who had met Joe on one of the two previous rides he attended would be interested in the news of his passing. Be careful out there, friends. Dean Williams Springfield, Oregon

Only a few months until September!
30
Howdy Coasters, We're only a few months away from the gathering of the PCs in Eureka to start our trek down Highway 1 on the Pacific Coast. This might be a good time to start making hotel reservations and getting your bike ready for the journey. So far all of Highway 1 is looking good. There is a fire in Big Sur (the Willow Fire) but it's currently burning to the east and isn't threatening the highway. We'll keep an eye on things as the summer progresses. Currently I've got about 15 folks signed up for this year's ride. If you're getting this email and don't want to get emails about the ride, you can unsubscribe from this group by going here: /g/pacificcoast/editsub Looking forward to seeing everyone in September! What week should we have the 2021 ride?
5
#poll-notice
A new poll has been created: This poll is to help us settle on which week in September 2021 we will do the TGPCHPCMY2KMR+21 ride. The plan is to do the "classic" route starting in Eureka and heading south along the PCH. More info on the route is available here: https://www.douglasvanbossuyt.com/the-great-pacific-coast-highway-pacific-coast-motorcycle-year-2xxx-motorcycle-ride/ In years past, Leland ran the ride starting the weekend after Labor Day. The rationale was that all the kids would be back in school and the snowbirds would not be heading south yet so the ride would have the lowest chance of encountering a wayward flock of Winnebagos on the PCH while maximizing the chance of good weather. However, we can choose a different set of dates in September based on everyone's schedules. Please select the most favorable date(s) for your schedule. 1. September 4-12 2. September 11-19 3. September 18-26 4. September 25-October 3 Vote Now Do not reply to this message to vote in the poll. You can vote in polls only through the group's website.

2021 Ride Planning Thread
9
Howdy Coasters, Let's start a new thread to talk about some of the ideas for the 2020 ride(s). I think there is a lot of interest in doing the same route as the 2020 ride at roughly the same time of year (September). Glenn E. also mentioned about wanting to do a spring ride. We could do multiple rides on the PCH next year. The only issues I could think of for doing two rides are 1) people might be split between the two rides so we wouldn't see everyone and, 2) springtime is more likely to have highway closures on the PCH through Big Sur due to landslides. The three versions of the ride that Leland organized are: 1) "classic edition" (Start in Eureka, CA and head south), 2) "northern edition" (Start in Fort Bragg, CA and head north), 3) "Sierra Nevada edition" (five day loops over the Sierras based out of Cameron Park, CA). Here are the descriptions of the routes from Leland: https://www.douglasvanbossuyt.com/the-great-pacific-coast-highway-pacific-coast-motorcycle-year-2xxx-motorcycle-ride/classic-edition-eureka-ca-heading-south/ https://www.douglasvanbossuyt.com/the-great-pacific-coast-highway-pacific-coast-motorcycle-year-2xxx-motorcycle-ride/the-northern-edition-ft-bragg-heading-north/ https://www.douglasvanbossuyt.com/the-great-pacific-coast-highway-pacific-coast-motorcycle-year-2xxx-motorcycle-ride/the-sierra-edition-high-passes/ Usually by the beginning of May the weather is pretty good along the California coast although some years we can get a late storm. The Sierra Nevada edition can't be run until sometime in June or even into July depending on Sierra snowpack for some of the passes. The northern edition of the ride probably would be iffy until the end of June depending on storms. I remember riding part of the northern version back in 2010 through Washington in September and getting rained on for at least a day of it. Based on some messages from this year, the weekend after Labor Day Weekend has traditionally been chosen for the start of the ride because there are fewer RVs on the road then and the fall storms haven't started yet. I personally have two potentially contradictory desires for 2021: 1) do the "classic edition" and 2) ride through Placerville (not far from Cameron Park where the "Sierra Nevada edition" was based out of before) to visit Leland. I wouldn't mind doing the PCH and the northern part of US101 the whole way from north to south, too although that may be a pipe dream depending on my work schedule. I also personally would like to shift the time of the September ride back a couple weeks to line up with the time between quarters at my work when it's much easier for me to take vacation. It's not my decision though so let's start talking about 2021 and what we might want to do. Cheers, Douglas in Monterey (currently in Dinkey Creek -- no, the fire that started yesterday over by Camp Sierra isn't threatening us)
