upcoming PACE NorCal weekends (April and May)
Thanks to CJ Smith for calling our February dance, and thanks to everybody who came out to dance! The new "C-3A with some C-3B tips" format we tried at that dance seemed to be well-received, so we will be making use of the same format for the Sunday sessions of our upcoming (April and May) weekends. The Friday evening sessions will remain A-2, and Saturday will be C-1 all day (with just a couple of C-2 star tips, since there will be plenty of C-3A on Sunday of those weekends). The dates are: Michael Bandoian 4 April Friday - one evening session - A-2 5 April Saturday - two daytime sessions - C-1 6 April Sunday - two daytime sessions - C-3A with some C-3B flyer: https://www.pacenorcal.org/flyers/pace-202504.pdf Barry Clasper 2 May Friday - one evening session - A-2 3 May Saturday - two daytime sessions - C-1 4 May Sunday - two daytime sessions - C-3A with some C-3B flyer: https://www.pacenorcal.org/flyers/pace-202505.pdf Meanwhile, we have one more C-1 Saturday coming up, just a little more than two weeks from now: Michael Kellogg 22 March Saturday - two daytime sessions - C-1 flyer: https://www.pacenorcal.org/flyers/pace-202503.pdf And don't forget that we could use some help planning and organizing all this. reminders: PACE C-3A and C-3B next Saturday, plus Board election
Coming up in one just one week: CJ Smith calling C-3A with some C-3B Saturday 22 February 11:00am-1:30pm and 2:30-5:00pm Murphy Park in Sunnyvale Flyer: https://www.pacenorcal.org/flyers/pace-202502.pdf As previously explained, we are still experimenting with how we can best bring more Challenge dancing to people in this area, and we are trying this particular format to see if it will get better attendance than the split C-2/C-3A format we have tried several times in the past few years. There just doesn't seem to be much interest in C-2! Also, a full day of C-3A was the most common format we had been using for Sunday when we ran weekends before the pandemic, so we are hoping that it will work again now. We have two weekend events planned for later this spring. We'll be basing our decision on what to offer on those Sundays partly on how well these February sessions are received. So if you would like us to continue with this format, please show us that interest by attending these sessions, this coming Saturday! Do you have an opinion on what kinds of sessions we should schedule, who we should get to call them, or where we hold them? You're in luck! We are in the process of electing a new Board of Directors. The current Board members have been serving for several years in a row, and we'd be happy to have help! Anyone who is a dues-paying member is eligible to serve -- you can nominate yourself or any other member using the form at: https://www.pacenorcal.org/pace-board-form.pdf Nominations are due by 1 April. next PACE dance coming up - CJ Smith / 22 February / C-3A with some C-3B
Reminder: our next PACE dance is coming up in just three weeks: CJ Smith calling C-3A with some C-3B Saturday 22 February 11:00am-1:30pm and 2:30-5:00pm Murphy Park in Sunnyvale Flyer: https://www.pacenorcal.org/flyers/pace-202502.pdf As previously explained, we are still experimenting with what we can do best to bring more Challenge dancing to people in this area, and we are trying this particular format to see if it will get better attendance than the split C-2/C-3A format we have tried several times in the past few years. news from PACE NorCal for 2025
Happy New Year! First, a reminder that the calendar year is also our membership dues year. So if you didn't renew/join at the December dance, please consider doing so at the January dance. As a member you qualify for lower prices at our dances. Of course you'll get the biggest saving if you attend our dances regularly, but even if you attend just a few full-day dances you will save more than the dues amount. Dues are still just $25/person for the year. You can pay dues at any dance. (Or if you would prefer to send a check by mail, use the form at: https://www.pacenorcal.org/membership.html Our first dance of the year is coming up in less than two weeks -- Vic Ceder calling C-1 (with a few star tips) on Saturday, 18 January. This dance will be held in the dance studio at Menlo-Atherton High School. Then in February we will be trying something a bit different. The turnout has been disappointing for the C-2 session when we have split a day between C-2 and C-3A -- sometimes we've had fewer people for the C-2 than for the C-3A! So on 22 February we have invited CJ Smith to call two sessions of C-3A, with a few C-3B tips. We will see how well that works before deciding how to schedule higher-level sessions in the future. If you would like us to schedule more C-3A or C-3B in the future, please be there! In March we will have another C-1 Saturday (22 March), this one with Michael Kellogg. For details about all of these dances (including links to printable flyers), visit: https://www.pacenorcal.org Then we have planned two full-weekend programs, similar to what we normally did before the pandemic, with A-2 on Friday evening, C-1 on Saturday, and some combination of higher levels on Sunday. The callers will be Michael Bandoian, 4-6 April, and Barry Clasper, 2-4 May. Meanwhile, we will be electing a new Board. Finally, a reminder that two special events with Challenge dancing are coming to Northern California later this year. In July, the IAGSDC convention will be held in San Francisco: https://hitchhikeacrossthegalaxy.com/ Then in September, the annual "West Coast Advanced and Challenge Weekend" will be held this year in Sacramento: https://www.funkymonkeyregroup.com/ It's not that often that these events are this conveniently located for us. So mark your calendar and plan to attend! (Also note that the pre-registration price for the September event will be going up next week -- check their web site for details.) PACE NorCal participation in USDA non-profit program / bylaws amendments
Officers of several local square dance groups have been looking into participation in the program offered by the United Square Dancers of America (USDA) for obtaining recognition by the IRS as a non-profit organization. A summary of this program, the requirements for participation, and the benefits of obtaining this status can found at: https://www.usda.org/USDA501c3Program.php To be able to participate we will need to make changes to our bylaws, to include language required either by the IRS or USDA. The PACE NorCal Board of Directors will be considering whether we should participate in this program at a meeting scheduled for 1 August. If we decide to go ahead with it, we will then be asking the membership to approve the necessary bylaws amendments. A draft of the proposed amendments can be found at: https://www.pacenorcal.org/pace-bylaws-usda-20240729.pdf If you have questions about any of these amendments, feel free to contact me. But the main points are these: The IRS requires certain provisions (e.g., that if we disband our assets will be transferred to another 501(c)(3), and that we won't get involved in certain kinds of political activity) to be included for any organization seeking 501(c)(3) status (regardless of whether they obtain this status through another organization like USDA, or directly). And in order for USDA (with which we are already indirectly affiliated via the California Council of Square Dancers) to provide this service to us, we must also become an "Associate Member" of USDA directly, and in support of that we must include in our bylaws an acknowledgement both of their bylaws and their "Code of Conduct" and "Code of Ethics". (And because one of the paragraphs of their Code of Conduct makes reference to traditional square dance attire, though it does not actually require member organizations to have a dress code, to avoid any possible misinterpretation of that reference we are also adding a paragraph specifically stating that we do not have a dress code.) In addition to these changes directly related to participation in this program, there are a number of problems with our existing bylaws that will need to be corrected before we can submit them as part of applying for this program (things that have nothing to do with this program, but we can't submit as part of our application bylaws that have these kinds of problems). These include statements that are simply untrue, things that no longer make sense because the existing text is so old, and various errors or inconsistencies in grammar, spelling, etc. None of these changes are intended to affect anything about how our organization operates internally -- they are just intended to bring the text "up to date" and make it more presentable. Please take a look at both the description of the program and the proposed bylaws amendments, and let me know if you have any questions. Note: Interlocked Squares and SCVSDA are also considering participating in this program, and to do so will also need amendments to their bylaws. Although the basic idea is the same, the details of the bylaws changes and the procedures for approving them are different for each organization. So if you are an SCVSDA Delegate or a member of Interlocked, you may have already received another notice relating to this general topic, but please read and consider the information in each notice separately. And don't forget that we have a dance coming up this Saturday: https://www.pacenorcal.org/flyers/pace-202408.pdf
